The trench is an example of buying what you love trumps either sale, no sale, seasonal or not, boutique or discount.

It was a TJMaxx find in not my local TJ Maxx that for some reason carried some nicer-looking items. I'd been thinking about a colorful trench, wanting more lightweight toppers for my climate. Had seen a lot of variations on berry, hot pink and not pulled the trigger, but this was love in color ! I have bought too much stuff in years past I don't need at TJM, but with more looking and less buying it can work.

OMG, the TRENCH! I love it on you. I like the flared skirt but it needs to make you happy. Just purged a whole slew of flippy skirts because they just didn't rock my world.

Wonderful ensemble! I adore the cheetah print with the feminine twirly skirt. The red coat just finishes the outfit. I love it!

I think you look great especially with the belt lacing the leg line! But I also have trouble feeling good in flared skirts. it may just not be a silhouette that makes you happy. I really like the bright trench also!

Thank you for the ideas! I am hoping I can experiment more as I upgrade some of my footwear. And I need a new tights option. I have worn a kind of off-black before but this was a cold day so I wore cozier weight and that does weigh it down. For me the shoes and tights are linked--if I find my ideal shootie/oxford that fits closer at the ankle, I am more likely to wear more leg-exposing hose/tights.

caro, I hadn't thought of the shirt but I have a vision of what you may mean--it would add some upper interest, texture and volume almost like a "shirtwaist" style but still fitted at the waist. I think I might like that more than a tiny cardi that tends to make me feel twee and too booster-squad.

These comments are so helpful--you guys are able to put into words some of my reservations and that can lead to a more successful outfit.

What a beautiful trench! The twirly skirt looks like lots of fun too. I am with Suz on the issue of hose/booties.

I think the booties hose & skirt work really well with the trench (which is gorgeous by the way). I would like to see a shirt or similar under the current top to add some layering - as always, my opinion only.

You look fab! The twirly skirt is fun and a great silhouette for you, as you know. I agree maybe a lighter shootie and less opaque hose would lighten things up a bit, but I do think it works with your booties.

LOVE the trench. Gorgeous on you! Pop that collar if you like - you can get away with that!

I really like it! The trench is GORGEOUS! I like your twirly skirt very much, and I think the length is fine, but I agree that a lighter shootie might lift the ensemble a little.

Here is my same sweater worn with a black knit twirly skirt. I think it looks better in motion, but I'm not perfectly happy with the proportions. I bought the skirt a year or so ago and have not been wearing it as I thought I would. I had it shortened a bit, and that seems to make it stick out more--it's almost a ponte-type knit. I might prefer my twirls in softer fabric that hangs straighter. I have shorter cardi's I've tried as well, but also think I can look too 50's-. For footwear I would also prefer a more polished style, such as maybe a shootie rather than bootie. Or maybe this is not a silhouette that I will put a lot more into. Oh well!

Wearing with raspberry trench-- not the ideal length for skirts/dresses, but I wear mostly with pants. The happiness factor is high in this trench on a chilly cloudy day. I hope it does not read too big, as it is to be able to layer over blazers and therefore work in cooler weather. I can have size/style trouble with outerwear to feel comfortable over a jacket but still okay with just a thin top, as I hate tight shoulders/armholes/ bust over a jacket. I think single-breasted is a better style for me, but when I found it last spring I liked the color, fabric and the open V trench collar style (as opposed to the johnny collar).

The trench was my first foray into truly colorful outerwear, ever! I'm sold, even if I need to refine my goals somewhat. I also got last fall the Gap red quilted belted jacket and found it to be a mood-lifter, too. I still love warm beautiful neutrals, but I plan to have both options, now.
