Thanks, FashIntern! I’m definitely enjoying the rainbow and the vintage jewelry (today’s example:a gold tone seahorse pendant in shades of pink enamel & rhinestones)

I’m impressed at how stylish you are in very different ways summer and winter. Nice to see the great costume jewelry in both.

Thanks, 3style. I think you're right about the waist simulating effect of the print placement on that top. I bet it also lengthens my short torso which is a plus. I'll definitely look for more border print tops in the future.

I don't wear blazers at all so I scrolled right past that post of Angie's I have to admit! I do like long cardigans but that's not quite the point you were making....

Yes, I had been considering exchanging the shorts and a couple people up thread endorsed that plan. I'm so glad I did! Turns out linen bottoms relax a lot with wear. Lesson learned!

Missed the shorts conversation. Did you exchange those or perform alterations? Definitely better smaller.

Colorful popover is great on you. I’m always nervous to wear patterns with banding on the lower abdomen/ upper hip area. On you it isn’t widening in the least. Actually, I think that the exact placement and color with the navy shorts kind of simulates the waist defining look one gets by tucking a top into a high waisted bottom garment.

With the other two popovers, I was looking more closely and thinking maybe you could nip the shoulders ever so slightly, since you’re a sewing person. You look good with very crisp shoulder seam lines.... I’m wondering if you would consider one of those longer blazers that Angie posted about today. I’m thinking that worn open with a lower scoop it could work well for you with your jeans.

Yeah, I try to limit polyester so I don't think I'd be tempted by the lands end tops. Actually I'd like to make myself some scoopneck woven tanks, I have a couple pieces of liberty lawn that I bought in London a few years back, but I haven't been able to master fit well enough to cut into them. I should get back to that project!

Here's today's more colorful popover, and the sized down navy shorts:

SarahD8, I’ve never thought about the nonexistent woven scoop top! There are plenty of woven scoop neck dresses, so why not tops? I’m thinking it’s because people will spend more on a dress on average, and a scoop neck woven probably top probably has to come in real sizes like 2,4,6,8 to be flattering. I’m guessing that just reducing it the options in half and offering Small and Medium would create too much gaping and bunching for many....

Just got a feeling that maybe LandsEnd had something. Checked it out and there are indeed a few polyester woven blouses with deep scoops. I have sworn off woven polyester on the top half, ( too itchy) so that explains some of my being oblivious towards this style.

Thank you for the kind words Jenn, The Cat, and Katerina!

3style, haha, you have very quickly sussed out that scoopnecks are by far my preferred neckline. (And, I guess those straight-across smocked dresses have a similar vibe once you throw a cardi over.) As you can imagine scoopneck woven tops are exceedingly rare, but those split-neck popovers tick a few other boxes for me: no collar, some vertical integrity from the V, and some openness to the neckline which is an absolute must for me.

Can't show you a v-neck dress b/c I don't have any, colorful or not. Am planning to wear a more colorful popover today and will notice if it has any different effect (though its neckline is not as open as I would prefer). One point of interest that the popovers have that does not come through in the photos is movement, as they are made of very lightweight, floaty cotton, which may mitigate the lack of color/pattern somewhat in real life.

I’m really liking the strong straight across horizontal necklines and deep scoop necklines on you. They look really proportionate and not at all provocative, which is I’m assuming your intention. I’m less excited about you in the vneck tops, but maybe it’s because I’m looking for more pattern or color variety, because it suits you. I’d be curious to see you in a vneck top or vneck dress with more different colors included in it.

Thanks for the kind words, you two!

Texstyle, one of these days I should do a sewing kit challenge or something! I too have a number of items that just need a little tweak. (Actually that sundress in 3-4...it’s strapless and would be much more functional if it weren’t. I keep meaning to cut off the narrow hem, use it to make straps, and then turn up a new hem...and then I keep procrastinating on it.)

Aida thanks for weighing in on the jeans! I do have another pair but not sure if they currently fit...have been procrastinating on checking that as well. :-s

I like that different people have different favorites from this set of outfits!

Fun! I like the setup of your challenge, and how great that you've already gotten some insight just a week in. Particularly fond of #8. Re the jeans length in 12, I think you could go either way; I have both lengths and like them for different reasons. If they are your only cropped pair, I vote yes take another inch off.

Thanks all of you for the comments! I’m really happy to hear the appreciation for the dress/cardi formula. I feel SO good in those looks so it’s really nice to have a bit of validation for that from stylish folks.

La Ped and Jussie, you are right, my summer style is very colorful, and more so than other seasons. I keep trying to narrow down my palette for summer and I always seem to end up back at MOAR RAINBOWS. And yet, I actually find it easier to get dressed in summer than in other seasons. Hmm, that is something to ponder.

Roxanna I’m so glad you started this challenge. I’m excited to think up new outfits and I’m having a lot of fun!

Joy, interesting question. Jussie is right that my cardigan collection is, um, extensive, and I have a high affinity for color mixing, so I think that it will not be hard to remix the dresses. I am looking forward to the challenge of finding new combinations I haven’t worn before, though.

Becky thanks also for the thumbs up on the decision to exchange the shorts!

I love that you've identified what works for you: "Printed sundress, matching cardi and shoes is definitely a fast fallback summer outfit formula for me." You have a nice collection of sundresses, and that crocus print is delightful. I think you made a good call on the shorts in 5/6.

I love these outfits! Truly- each of them is fabulous. My favourite is 7. It’s totally flattering. Also it’s clever to use the sweater in number 9- the proportions look perfect. Your summer style is quite different from your winter style, especially in terms of colour. Though you still have a decent cardi collection going on!

I really like how you have set up this challenge, and will be watching for how you restyle a piece on the next wearing. Will dresses be harder to restyle than separates? For me they would as I have one dedicated topper per sun dress.

These are lovely - I love your FFB of dress + cards. And I love your cards with shawl collars in #1 and #2!

Glad to hear you are taking the challenge with me! Interesting how you already have some insights in Week 1...

What a feast of colour and pattern! I especially love your dress/cardi combos -- all great but #3/4 is tops!

I am joining Roxanna in her “team wear” challenge to wear the heck out of our existing wardrobes this summer. To recap, the rules that I have set for myself are as follows:

track what I wear each day

for week 1, wear whatever I want, but no repeating garments during the week.

for week 2 and subsequent weeks, each day choose 1 item that I wore sometime during the previous week, and wear it in a different way.

wear at least one accessory each day.

I don’t intend to post recaps of every week of outfits (instead I think I’ll try to post more around themes as they emerge). But I’m sharing my first week of outfits because I think it’s interesting to notice what items I reach for first and why — on some level, these must be the “easiest”/favorite items in my summer wardrobe.

I have already gained two insights from this exercise:

My collection of summer tops is pretty sparse. But I wear dresses a lot during the summer. Of the 6 outfits below only 3 included a top. Maybe I don’t *need* many summer tops.

I set myself a challenge to wear at least one accessory each day. I thought that this would be sort of a bare minimum. But it turns out that in summer, one accessory is often enough — it’s all that is necessary to make me feel sufficiently polished, and adding more can even feel like too much.

Here are the outfits:

1-2: red/blue paisley sundress | tomato red cardi | red peep-toe clogs

gold rose pendant | gold anchor pendant | 2 thin gold bangles

Printed sundress, matching cardi and shoes is definitely a fast fallback summer outfit formula for me.

3-4: purple smocked sundress | sky blue cardi | braided clog sandals

blue stone/pearl earrings (made by me for my wedding)

The blue cardi doesn’t quite match the blue in the dress but I think it “goes” and I loved how the buttons picked up the purple of the dress — that was a surprise that really pleased me.

5-6: navy linen shorts | blue ikat-print popover

I never left the house this day so you get to see my “house shoes” with this outfit. Also forgot to add an accessory! The shorts look a little sloppy to me, so I actually took them back and exchanged them for a size down.

7-8: Liberty print smocked sundress | coral 3/4 sleeve cardi | coral flat sandals

gold three-strand chain necklace

This cardi is relatively new to my closet, it’s brighter than I was expecting it to be and I’m not sure it’s the best color for me but for now I’m experimenting with it and hoping it’s JFE. The dress is also in JFE territory. It’s my “it’s so hot I don’t want anything touching my body” dress!

9-10: Green crocus-print dress | gray 3/4 sleeve sweatshirt | fuchsia patent sandals

silver marcasite hoops | black/silver enamel bangle

This dress doesn’t really work as a stand-alone dress, the top is totally unfitted and it’s not flattering at all, but I’m experimenting with different ways to rein in the volume of the top. I love the colors and print.

11-12: cropped jeans | white 3/4 sleeve embroidered popover | coral flat sandals

porcelain shell pendant | vintage fish scarf (worn in hair)

Oops, I forgot my rules and repeated the coral sandals! Well, that says something about how useful they are. Should I hack another inch off these jeans?

Thank you to Roxanna for getting this started and thanks to all of you for any thoughts, observations, and suggestions you wish to share.
