Our church, together with many other churches, made and served those hot lunches. We had one day a month. What was heart renching to me was to see so many elderly people, often with toddlers and preschoolers under their care. Their children, the parents of those little ones, were often in prison, usually for drug possession. Being homeless in that cold weather would be particularly hard, your donated coat is going to be very useful for that poor lady as will all the other items they were able to pick up. The streets are lined with people who used to live in the houses and apartments. And actually, a lot of the places are filled with people doing co-housing... ROOMS go for $900. My old apartment which was 350 sq feet maybe, is now $2000 a month. I really wanted someone who needed it to have it. I hope it helps the woman stay warm.</p> <p>Lisa, it’s an apt description. One person thanked me and said this helped her stay sober. On the way home we saw people dressed up for the St. Patrick’s Day Crawl. They have crawls all year long - Santa crawls, zombie crawls, etc. I think the idea is that by the time you’ve gone to all the bars downtown (and there are a lot) you’re crawling. They get hot meals six days a week, and the sack lunches help tide them over from Saturday until Monday. Several churches do this, so we only do it every couple months. Our turn was yesterday. I had never done it before. It was quite an eyeopener. </p> <p>Our town has a severe problem with a lack of affordable housing. Rents have skyrocketed recently, and weekly motels have been torn down. And the vacancy rate is approaching zero. Many previously housed people have become homeless. </p> <p>After making around 300 lunches at the church, we went to the homeless shelter. We were outside for 2 1/2 hours, first handing out toiletries and donated clothes, then the sack lunches. It was quite chilly, hovering around freezing, and snowing. </p> <p>What I wore: a North Face green fleece, jeans and long underwear, Santana winter boots, North Face fleece hat and scarf, fleece gloves, and Fjallraven Greenland down jacket. By the end my hands and feet were cold. We were lucky that they put up pop ups (portable shelters) or we would have been soaked.</p> <p>ETA: I donated my Cabellas long down coat, and was gratified to see an older woman find it in the pile of clothes and immediately put it on. I think it will go to good use. </p>
