Oh, sorry Mochi! She's already back at school, so I can't say. Now that I looked on line, they may not be Frye's. They were being sold right next to the Frye's, and were of very similar quality, comfort, fit and price point. They have a red zipper up the back, which is quite a cool detail! Maybe someone else will come along who knows the brand that has the red zippers?

They fit her beautifully -- her calves are 13 inches just like mine, but she's 3-1/2-4 inches taller than me, so she can fit in shaft heights in the 14-15 inch range (unlike me). I nearly bought them too, but they came up just a tad too high for me (rubbed back of knee when I sat and bent my leg).

It was a splurge but she's going to a school that gets lots of snow and ICE... on hills! She really needed decent every-day boots that had just a bit of a heel (rather than flat) for gripping. Also, as she kept pointing out, she's pretty much done growing taller, and when she gains weight, it's always in her upper body, not her lower. So she made a very good case to me why investing in expensive boots would be a good value.

These are all fantastic casual looks Shiny and as someone who struggles with casual, I get such inspiration from seeing these types of outfits. #2 really stands out to me because of that fab cobalt blue colour on you and the animal print belt.

Great outfits! Hard to see how you don't feel you "do" casual well. I love all the different elements, and then again how you've combined them. It's (very incidentally) hard to believe you're five-zero! You look leggy and so proportionate. Whatever it is, you know how to dress.

Which types of Fryes were they that your daughter got, if you don't mind my asking?

Hope the Regatta was fun. Yesterday sure was gorgeous....

You look great, Shiny. I think you hit the casual nail on the head and you still look like "you" (the smart casual or dressy Shiny we usually see). Outfit #1 is my fave and I also love your leopard belt and your Angie scarf. Your hair looks very nice but I LOVE you with shorter hair (and as a short-haired "lifer" myself I understand how incredibly irritating it is when hair gets to that too-long stage--mine is like yours and will never, ever work well in a longer style).

I hope that leather jacket is still there on Tuesday--be sure to update us, OK?

I love how you make casual still look polished and pulled together. I've been trying to add more jackets because I agree with the whole 'needing more structure at a certain age' idea, and your green jacket looks perfect. And your hair- I think it looks cute, but I remember your different styles from years past and you are adorable with short hair too.
Lucky you!

Thank you Deborah!

To me, casual = cotton. Pic #1 features a silk-like blouse, not cotton, so it reads dressier than I would want, for say, walking all over at the Regatta. Basic cotton tees are difficult for me to find! You'd think it'd be easy enough... but no. Especially because I look horrible in crew necks, and I'm short. There are petite options but the quality is not always so good, or the color selection is lousy. If I go with regular, I need XS for vertical measurements -- but these are often just too tight around the middle-aged mid section.

This week I chanced upon the Jcrew vintage tees and I am in love with them. They aren't petite, but I like that they are offered in vibrant colors (not just black and white and that's it). And most of all, the XS regular *skims* over the mid section. It's loose, but not too much. Just right. The V is a bit low, the length a few inches too long (untucked -- but I'm tucking now!). I am betting these will shrink just right when I wash them.

That said, I think Caro is right: she said elsewhere today that those of us who are older need structure in our casual outfits. Cotton tees don't really give structure. So I'm adding in structure with the jeans, the belt, and also with a jacket. But note that the green army jacket is cotton. To me, pic 2 reads most casual, and it was my personal favorite of the three.

As someone who has always felt challenged in the 'casual' wardrobe department, I relate but seriously I think you look fabulous. I actually like te high rise skinnies with the blouse tucked but I am sure untucked looks great too.

Your looks here are dressy casual and you have a dressy asthetic so go with it.

Your hair looks great btw but I am similar in that at a certain length it's develops a mind of it's own. I have to keep it a certain length to ensure it stays in good condition, is not damaged from regular coloring and blow waving. The longer mine gets the less body and volume I have as well.. It think we may have similar hair.. mine's naturally curly too.

Thanks, Parsley... not sure what style they are. I will check later and report back (I'm vegging comfortably at the moment!).

As for the green leather jacket, I was at Nordie's this week and talked to an SA. They did get a very limited quantity of same jacket, in burgundy, but they sold out instantly. She did not expect to have anymore shipments. But then she pulled up the brand on the computer, and there are several that are available pre-order. In navy (but not my size right now). Burgundy. An interesting distressed gray. And the same olive green. She recommended if I want any of them to pre-order it online.

Burgundy and the gray would probably work better with my wardrobe. The distressed gray to me reads a bit too "acid washed" soooo... I think not. I keep leaning towards the olive, despite my reservations! Long story short, *if* it's still available in my size at the original store I spotted it at (and that's a HUGE if), I have a 20% off coupon... and I'm there on Tuesday getting my hair cut right next door... IF it's still there, it's coming home with me. But I doubt it will be. You could say I am leaving this one up to fate.

What did you decide about the green leather jacket, btw? I sure like it on you.
#3 I love your hair pulled back like that for a change of pace. You look very chic, and I think you had the right idea to make the big scarf look work.

Krishni, trust me.. the longer length just isn't working lately. My hair is so thin, it does not want to stay in the "nubbin." I had to use copious amounts of gel but 15 minutes outdoors in the wind and... boom. It came all undone. Even if I manage to grow it several inches longer, the pony created is just so darn thin, it looks like crap (excuse language, but it's appropriate term).

Caro, I have worn this blouse in myriad of ways before, including with various color sweaters to pick up the blouse colors and/or coordinate. . For this day, my challenge was something that could go from art gallery opening (pictured) to pumpkin carving at a friend's home -- super casual, washable, and would look good sans jacket since I knew her apartment would be warm. It was too warm inside or outside for a scarf.

That said, do you think this top would work with the leopard belt? I did try that initially, but thought the patterns didn't quite mix ... I could see it if the leopard was in the shoes, farther away.. but not so close up. (Unfortunately I don't like how my leopard booties look with these skinnies.)

As I've mentioned, I've been focused on filling out a "casual" capsule. This is the one area I never feel I really "nail" -- I always feel schlumpy. But I do have a lifestyle need for it, so I keep trying. Here are some attempts this week.

I wore other things this week -- dressier - but did not have a chance to photograph. Sorry these photos are not that great. Had a busy week with daughter visiting from college.

Outfit #1:
- paisley BR blouse, tucked in. I do not have a decent black wide belt, which I think would have helped here. After seeing this photo, I untucked the blouse, and DH agreed it looked better that way. That is how I normally wear it anyway. (This blouse, btw, is the one I'd use for the BR capsule challenge -- one of my favorite blouses, hands down)
- Compass necklace
- AT ponte knit jacket with black/gold buttons (this is one of my favorite jackets ever; veterans may remember it from the past -- I am still wearing it.. sorry the photo does not do it justice).
- AG Farrah high rise skinnies
- Me Too wedge booties
- black slouchy bag (casual seems to require a slouchy bag!)

Outfit 2: worn to Regatta.
- ATL army jacket (again; it does dress everything down!)
- Jcrew short sleeve vintage cotton tee
- leopard belt
- AG skinnies again
- black slouchy bag again
- Me Too bronze ballet flats. Yes, I'm still wearing these. I have walked all over the place in these, and I walked for hours in these yesterday.

Outfit 3: trying the oversized scarf. Hair worn back for a change.

Notes & commentary:

1) My hair is driving me NUTS. It is now long enough I can actually pull it back in a hair band (creating an awkward "nubbin" -- the reason I chopped it off in the first place. Wow. It has not been this long in YEARS). I have a salon appointment on Tuesday. I am going to cut it short again. I did like the longer style for a change of pace, but when my hair reaches this length, it just refuses to go any farther, without looking like a rat's nest. I have been losing massive amounts of hair (breakage... it's like my strands get this long and then decide to commit suicide, or something). Plus, with scarves and colors and layers, I feel like I lose my neck, when my hair is this length. So... chop chop I go again, at least for the winter!

2) I pulled the hair back not only because it was driving me nuts, but I felt it looked better with my oversized scarf attempt. I do love this scarf, but it is a bit overwhelming on me, size wise! I wore it a different day with a black dress, in a totally different manner ... wish I had taken a pic of that outfit. I wore it shopping at the mall with DD, and rec'd lots of compliments. I will re-wear that outfit again and be sure to take pics.

On that shopping trip, we purchased a huge oversized knit infinity scarf for DD at Urban Outfitters. DD adores scarves and has a big collection. It looked adorable on her, particularly with hair tucked in, or pulled back in a pony. Wish I'd taken a pic! But that was my inspiration for outfit 3 hair/scarf combo.

3) The Frye boots: DD needed good quality tall boots for college. I wanted her to try Frye's, since everyone here raves about them, and since she's 4 inches taller, I figured she'd be able to find some to fit her (I've not had any luck with the tall boots). She found the perfect pair... my dream boots, actually... in chestnut. Sorry no pics, but they fit her like a DREAM. And I wound up splurging on these shorties. This is NOT my typical style........ but boy are they comfortable for walking. So I am giving them a try! I went with black rather than brown because I felt it would elongate my legs more, seeing as how they only have a bit of a heel.

4) New lipstick color (pics 2 and 3). Some drugstore brand. It stains my lips and lasts 12 hours, through eating and everything. I was dubious about it, as I've been doing more muted/subtle shades for awhile now, but DH told me today he really likes it a lot and I should wear it more often.
