Hey, birthday twins! Awesome ^^ The terms do feel like a post-effect labeling, I mean at the time "punk is punk" you know? My go-around with it was pretty late, since it was the 90s. Initially it was all 3rd wave, very skate; probably similar to your co-worker's punk for that matter, though I definitely broadened my horizons as I got more into it (gotta know the history and all that). Totally different from those who would've grown up in the 80s or even the late 70s. I mean it's pretty hard to compare, say, TSOL and Limp Green Day started out as decent poppy punk, but I'd say they're just Pop or Pop Rock any more. I think a lot of the punk attitude has really lightened up/become diluted over the years, feels like there's less of the "question everything" vibe. I have been wondering if maybe the kids today just aren't angry enough, heh.

Thanks Cathy ^^ Sorry to hijack your thread! I don't do much musically these days, though I do still have all my instruments and recording gear.

Aida! I have just noticed we have the same birthday!

Ya, I think you're right. Folks collided at the same places, weren't totally separate. Also, I don't think all the terms existed and/or applied in the same way. Well, post punk for sure didn't. It'd be a little self-conscious to go around calling yourself that. Except that I was conscious of being far down the line.

It's so weird. There are these generational evolutions, changes. I have a co-worker who is 35 or something and into punk. He's definitely into punk, but I haven't the faintest idea what this entails. His punk is not - except for the music - my punk. Truth is, I am way older than him. And I only know punk because I hung out with people way too old for me, who in turn were like the kid brothers/sisters of the original punks... who were all dead of drug overdose.

Basically I sit here and think this: Can Green Day really be punk when they stopped playing because people were getting too rough in the mosh pit and told people to be nice? Nice?!

oh. p.s. cciele, my co-worker was bummed to hear the Specials came and went without him! Lol.

Aida, I loved the little glimpse into your time in a 2-tone-style band. That sounds so awesome! I hope you still have your toe in that music world

OOOH! How awesome that you got to see The Specials (I loooove them; had a big Walt Jabsco decal on my guitar along with a checkered strap back in my ska band days hehe). I hope you had a fantastic time and that your tummy muscles are sore from too much skankin! I had a chance to see them many many years ago at a Warped Tour (!!), but ended up missing most of the show due to overheating and having to wait in a ridiculously long line for water -_- Good times though ^^ You are definitely right about the dressiness level of ska shows, and especially 2-tone ska, vs. other ska/punk shows; it was one of my favorite things about going to/performing ska. Love your concert outfit, you've got that ubiquitous and Definitely Necessary black and white graphic going on just right!

(You know, I was just thinking the other day that perhaps I needed to clarify that when I say "punk" for myself I really mean "Ska/Punk" because that's far more accurate; black and white, checks, houndstooth, suits, pencil skirts etc. along with plaid, spikes/metal, leather, denim, black, skinny pants etc). I just figured most people wouldn't be as familiar with ska because, well, it was a much smaller scene! Rachy, back when I was a more practicing punk I used to be really up on those subtle ska/punk differences but they are starting to moosh together in my mind heh. I think later on, in many areas it simply wasn't as defined so many of those sub-genres DID blend together. For example, where I lived and the bands we performed with, there was a strong blend of 3rd wave ska, skate punk, and a bit of thrash punk/metal; our band was the only one with strong 2-tone/swing influences, and we were certainly a minority in the circuit. Eek, sorry for the ramble!)

Yeah, the two-tone scene has definitely punk as well as reggae influences.

Not sure who chronicles this kind of history -- there's so much crossovers, subgenres, etc. it gets confusing! Wikipedia is always a good starting point :)

I also have this oldish book called Street Style that is fun to look at:
http://www.amazon.com/Streetst.....s&ie=...
Oh man, the Specials! Crazee :)

Funny, I hadn't thought about it before seeing your DMs there, but the 2-Tone scene did/does have a good dash of punk.

Who chronicles this kind of history? I'd like to know that. I am becoming very confused about pre-punk, punk, post punk, 2-tone, grunge, mods, etc. Lol. I used to say to my friend that we were punks out of uniform. But maybe we were just post punk, or 3rd wave mod, or new wave...
Thank you everyone for the kind words! The concert was fun but quite packed on the floor. Ended up doing mini-skanking/bouncing up and down. The mini worked well being in a hot, packed venue.

Mander -- hm, not sure if the "hep hep hep" is a third-wave thing; I think it might be even earlier! Definitely had a bunch of "hep hep hep" and "pick it ups" going on :)

If you want to see people dressed up, go to a ska concert. In particular, two-tone ska attracts fans that like to wear mod/punk-influenced ska styles, such as suits, skinny ties, fedoras, pork pie hats, suspenders, flare dresses, pedal pushers, etc. Saw some argyle too, although not traditionally ska. And lots of patterns -- the ubiquitous black-and-white of stripes, checks, and houndstooth, mod dots, cherries, and other fun graphics.

Here's my attempt at ska style with stuff I had in my closet to go see the Specials last night. And my attempt at skanking arms :)

P.S.
