I appreciate harem pants on others but they are not part of my style at all -- same goes for the denims you have on here. Definitely pushing farther silhouette-wise than I am interested in doing, and I need more tailoring in my pieces even though I am a tomboy. But it is always, always fun to see how other people dress. I love looking at your WIWs precisely for that reason, because we have such different points of view. Love the exuberance in both outfits. (And especially love the little foxy hoops!)

As for your purchasing strategy, it makes sense to me, but I really try not to have an opinion unless someone asks for feedback on buy-or-not-buy. It's so clear on this forum that there is a wide range of purchasing power. As far as I am concerned, if it works for you, that's awesome.

Enjoy your fabulous new purchases!

cciele, the rag and bone pajama jeans also fell into my "unique enough to purchase new at retail price" category. After trying a pair in XS at Intermix and liking how they looked overall but finding them too big I pre-ordered pair in XXS due to ship at the end of April :-)

annagybe, it's funny you should say that. I have found that as much as women either love or hate them, every man I know really hates harem pants. My BF is kind enough to say polite things like "those are some unusual pants you're wearing" or some-such rather than say he really dislikes them (I believe that was his exact phrase when I wore these, meanwhile 3 different women stopped me at the restaurant we had dinner at that night to tell me how much they really loved my jeans). Perhaps we should rename harem pants as "man-repeller" pants? ;-)

Deborah, thanks for the kind compliment! I believe Anna has the earlier incarnation of these exact harem jeans, yes.

Oh my goodness. Both pants are just so fabulous. Is it ok if I confess some envy here?? The jeans are just so cool. I would love something like this, but I am pretty sure they wont love me lol.

The fact that they are not conventionally flattering is one of the things I like about harem pants. But your styling here is perfect and I find both outfits so attractive to the eye. So you can pop me into the I LOVE HAREM PANTS camp :)

I love your spending philosophy too. I am similar. I don't use credit for clothing purchases and I only buy what I can pay cash for. I keep a keen eye out for wishlist items going on sale and like you when something is perfect and I know it will be a good investment, I will pay full price.

Did I say I LOVE those jeans.

Question, are these the same ones Anna has??

Secondly... GIIIIIRL YOU ROCK THOSE PANTS! I find harem pants so difficult to pull off but you wear them with ease and confidence! Keep rockin and I can't wait to see what outfits you come up with next!

Awesome to see more traction with the R13 harems and X over jeans! I'm a big fan of wearing non-figure-flattering (well, in the conventional sense) clothing; I have some harems pants that are going strong for over three years.

Your buying strategy makes a lot of sense. In looking at R13 jeans, I was also wondering why I should spend the money on a skinny that looks like other skinnies, and you've articulated the reasoning very nicely. I'm very tempted to jump on the harem/x over jean bandwagon here, but I put my $ on the Rag & Bone pajama pants. We'll see how that works out

I really like the jeans harem on you. Perfectly with the jacket.
I owned the black ones too. I wore them indoors to relax in. Unfortunately they weren't working very well with my bodyshape. So wearing them indoors was the best thing...and so comfy!
They look great on you..modern and edgy, and they don't make you look huge! Lucky girl!! The harem jeans would pair nicely with heels too, to make it more dressy instead of edgy.

My buying habits are somewhat similar to yours although we switched (with careful checks, balances, and biweekly autopay in full) to using a cash back credit card for all expenses instead of a debit card because the percent back adds up.

I do like harem pants, especially ones that are tighter around the ankles for some reason (I really enjoyed wearing cotton ones under tunic tops while living in India, like you say, hot weather perfect).

I'm not particularly into the stiffer jean iterations, I like the ones that form an arc inside the legs like your black pair, or are basically a long maxi skirt sewn up between the ankles (there's an interesting sewing project idea, hmmm...).

I like your styling with both these pants a lot though, looks super comfy and ready for the street :).

Hey, leopardluxe! You (and Annagybe) certainly have the best and most stylish guts to wear the R13(and not letting them to wear you!). And, as ladywone said:-go big, or go home- is the way to go!:-). I tried too big (unfortunatel) and it was quite a joke on my body(see it in my April Fool thread today, if curious:-)) so they went back in a wink of an eye:-)). If I would ever want to try again(not soon I'm afraid) then will have to be better some like your (or Deb's) black pair.

Your reasoning seems very sound to me! These are signature pieces that you wear really well, and they suit your style.

I am like IK in that I have a bit of poison eye for harem cuts, although many here on YLF wear them with panache, and you are one of them. For me, I think I have such an aversion to adding even more attention and visual weight to my lower half (which I'm already self-conscious about), that I just can't quite get my head around the style -- for me. But like I say, I think it's awesome that people like you can rock them so well.

I love the R13 crossover jeans, but again, they'd be disastrous on my hips and thighs. I enjoy seeing others wearing them, so I look forward to seeing how you style them!

IK, I bought the x-overs in a 24 in the vintage dark wash and even they border on being a hair too large. I noticed when I was looking at their skinny jeans those looked like they ran on the smaller side. So I'm guessing I'd swim in a 27 in the same model of x-over. I figure I'll just bide my time and look for a pair in 24 to crop up aftermarket. Now that I have the dark vintage wash blue ones there's no reason I can't combine them with some of my really RATE looks... and if I stumble across black ones in the 24 size for cheaper money then so be it. If not, I'll go without

gryffin, thanks! I bought the x-overs in vintage dark wash but am keeping my eyes out aftermarket for either the black waxed or vintage black washed ones -- since I think they'd go well with a lot of my urban punk/RATE attire. Yoox has the vintage black x-overs right now for $150 but they only have them in a size 27 and I need a 24, which I've noticed is not carried by 99% of the retailers selling the x-overs online.

I love everything but those harem jeans. Annagybe owns a pair and really enjoys them but I have such a poison eye for so much material at the crotch. It's fun to see two people with different styles wear the same item!

Ok harems are my first love. In my community no one blinks an eye because versions of this pant have been around forever in African and ethic prints. I say go big or go home. It is your own unique twist you put on these pants. When you are comfortable in yor own skin I feel you can own any look.

I've been a huge fan of harem pants for years. Harem pants are one of those wardrobe items that I've found people either love or hate. There isn't much in the way of ambivalence in how folks respond to whether they'll wear them, in my experience. I've seen them be panned by stylists as a fashion fail and glorified as the best thing since sliced bread.

I put them firmly in the best thing since slight bread category for a number of reasons:

Most. Comfortable. Pants. Ever

Figure forgiving. Wearing this type of pant isn't about being conventionally figure flattering, imho. It's about making a statement that I am comfortable in my own skin wearing whatever I like.

Best pants for hot weather climates. If you want leg coverage when the temps reach over 100 degrees and don't feel like wearing a dress or sweating like the dickens in regular pants these are the way to go (I have a couple of pairs of harem pants that I wore constantly in the spring and summer months when I lived in Vegas. I'd be cool enough when I was outside in the hot temps because of the fluid fabric and cut but warm enough when I was inside in the overly chilled AC that is everywhere in Vegas in the summer.

The most important thing about styling harem pants, imho, is attitude. Wear the pants. Don't let the pants wear you.

This weekend I did something I very, very rarely do. I bought two brand new pairs of premium denim jeans. The R13 harem jeans and R13 X-Over jeans. I'm guessing right now a few of you may be doing some math, going, wait...what?! Aren't those jeans like an obscene amount of money?

Yeah, they sort of are (at least in my book). But I pulled the trigger anyway. Here's my reasoning:

OMG, harem pants in ultra soft japanese denim! I love jeans and wear them more than any other type of clothing item. So to get both harem and denim combined is nirvana in my book.

Both styles are not basic jeans. They are a very unique style that other brands aren't copying. You won't find me rushing out to buy $500 jeans that look like my trusty but true Levi's skinnies but have a price tag that is 10x what I pay for my "regular" jeans. I looked at the R13 skinny jeans while I was in the store. They don't look or feel any different than the other pairs of good quality skinny jeans I own so I'm not interested in paying $300 for them when I can get the same quality and look for less after-market and/or pre-owned (I think it's perfectly fine that folks do this for themselves. I'm not judging others, whatsoever. If you've got the money and want to spend it on premium denim then bless you and have at it! I refer specifically to my own preferences when it comes to purchasing jeans).

99% of my jeans (and most of my clothing in general) I buy after-market or pre-owned. So on average I end up paying about $25-$40 for those J Brand and Adriano Goldschmied jeans that retail at over $200. But if I find I really like something like these unique R13 styles then I don't have a problem actually buying them new and paying the premium price.

This is the most important criteria: I have the cash in the bank to do so without it being any kind of a hit to my budget. Just because I don't usually buy my things new/full retail doesn't mean I can't. I just don't. (This isn't meant to sound snobbish, it's meant to illustrate that you won't find me paying the equivalent of rent on a bag or clothing item if it means I won't be able to pay my rent that month or I have to put it on a credit card to afford it). I don't use credit cards. If I don't have the cash to pay for something, then, in my book, I can't afford it. This holds true for luxury purchases or cars. It is, again, just my own personal philosophy for shopping, applicable only to myself, not others.

So I bought the harem jeans and the x-overs and I'm quite glad I did. More often than not I'll likely end up wearing the harem jeans uber casual with flip flops and tanks. For their "inaugural" spin, though, I decided to go more Edgy RATE with an Attitude -- and pair them with boots, shrunken fit leather moto and leopard cabbie hat. Again...wear the pants. Don't let the pants wear you.

I'll actually be bringing these to my seamstress to have them taken in a bit in the waist and slimmed ever so slightly at the top hip area --they are a squidge too big so right now I couldn't wear them without a belt. I want the option to wear them belt-less, so I think just a little nip/tuck will make them perfect.

So there you have it. Who else here is in the love it versus hate it camp when it comes to harem pants? And how do you feel about the style reinterpreted in denim?

Bonus photos I added are of another pair of harem pants that I bought in Barcelona Spain at a flea market about 6 years ago. This was before the harem trend became big in the US. I got them in black and taupe. I LOVE these harems and they are very much a weekend wear essential for me, especially for running errands like hitting the dry cleaners or getting a pedicure. This was Sunday's running errands outfit. Super casual, no-makeup, getting stuff done attire!
