I don't what I expected from your description of the too young dress but it's not that at all.
Fabulous dress, I think.

If you love the heavy velvet jacket with the thick ruffling, it's a very easy matter - if one day you tire of it - to have the seams opened, ruffle removed and seams sewn back, giving you a plain front collarless jacket. Or even a collared one if it can be got out of the removed ruffling. Easy enough doesn't necessarily equate to cheap tailoring costs, of course. Ruffles around the wrists can be removed the same way and the resulting length could be bracelet length. None of this would stop me for a minute but, OTOH, I do my own alterations.

I do not know your age but from your faceless pictures you do not look old. The dress in #7 does not look age inappropriate. I would go for it. It doesn't look that short to me. Yes it's less than knee length but because it is not fitted and trying to be sexy the length is fine.

I like the bronze dress from what I can see. I could see it working with an evening shawl, that might be easier to find than a jacket.

I would return the ruffle jacket. But that's because I am not a ruffles person, except the potato chip kind.

The boucle jacket is gorgeous and as others have said seems to remain very current. It looks lovely on you.

Im on the fence about the velvet jacket with the ruffles. I like the idea, but I feel it borders on being dated:(

I would alter the bronze dress, it looks like it would be a great dress.

unfrumped, good strategy to alter an inexpensive dress with good bones to get the perfectly fitted dress.

agree with suz and aida about boucle and jeans. not sure where you are on the modern to classic spectrum. i find that as i age, i need to shirt toward the former to look more contemporary and "relevant." ymmv.

Your WIW is lovely! I agree with Suz about pairing the cardigan with jeans if you want a more casual look (with bootcuts it'll still be fairly classic, but nice and casual); slim or wide leg trousers would also be fab. I think the ruffle blazer is nice, but probably only worth it if ruffles are part of your style persona. And the dress could be worth altering separate from having the jacket, at least the bottom half; that won't be affecting what jacket you end up with

Ah, Gaylene raises a good point. How is that neckline? No point in altering the dress if that does not work.

I like the cardigan. I'd probably dress it down with jeans to avoid it looking too staid. But if you like a perfectly classic look, it is great as is! Seems to fit you nicely.

The jacket is pretty. I don't think those details really date very much but agree that it is a dressy item, not for wearing in the daytime. However, I expect it is the kind of thing one would keep for years.

The bronze dress is lovely. I would spring for the alteration. It should not be difficult to find a dark bolero to wear with it. This is a bit pricey, but gives the idea: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/le.....sultback=0

or this one: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/do.....sultback=0

If you are small enough you might be able to get away with this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/un.....sultback=0

Don't laugh; I bought a jacket in the kids' department this summer and it was better quality than the grownups!

This one is pretty darned nice and comes in many colours, but, um...it would certainly offset the low price of the dress!

I've found a dramatic draped neck can pose problems when trying to fit it under a jacket so I'd be inclined hold off on alterations if I wouldn't wear the item as is. I wonder if a close-fitting, long-sleeve, lace top worn UNDER the the dress could also work to provide a bit more coverage?

The boucle cardigan is everywhere in Australia right now, and I Iove them for casual wear too so this would be a keeper.
I am with you on the ruffled jacket- not sure- but it IS dramatic and unusual!
The dress hemline is on-trend as -is. Good price and the fabric looks good. I would keep and alter to suit your needs.

#1 and 2 are of a boucle knit cardigan I was trying for work, to go with straight skirt or pants. The color is one of my favorite indeterminate neutrals so as to not wear black on top, also warm for winter, also gives some detail on top but can fit lab coat over.

3 &4: While on the hunt for my dressy capsule items, I tried this velvet jacket by Adrianna Pappel from Nordstrom's. Just have it on with my same skirt and tights. I like it, as it is a beautiful heavy but soft velvet, and over time I could probably find the right skirt and pants for dressy outfits, but I fear that because of the neck and sleeve ruffles, it would be more of a statement piece and I would not wear it many places and yet it might not hold up as classic for several years. The constant dressy dilemma--the items that look good at super dressy events are hard to work into other occasions.

5&6: A possible dress make-over outfit base. This is a bronze metallic knit dress I found for $21. ( As well you might, you say!). I like the color for dressy occasions because it fits my magpie gene, and this color is more flattering than black. But: It's both a bit too big and I hate the handkerchief hem. If I kept it, i would have it altered to a straight hem at a bit below knee length--sort of a graceful midi length--and taken in at the bodice side seams. Other problem is, sleeveless is not my best look for dressy/special occasions, hence the dress has to be a base for the perfect topper (black I would expect). Here is where I would need my imagined perfect topper, a la alaskagirl's post--some kind of soft chubby short jacket, not fake fur or pile though. Or maybe a very short fitted thin knit something. So would you find the topper before you invested in the alterations? To me dress would still be rather inexpensive even with that, but I can't tell for sure I can achieve the final "outfit" for this dress. This may be too imaginary to pull off.

Finally, # 7 is me trying something that is too short and too young--the velvet zig-zag dress from WHBM. it seemed to come to the knee when I first tried it on, but it "wants" to be shorter. The other reason it is only for my imaginary life is that the fabric is pretty decidedly winter holiday type, but I will be too cold-natured to wear this dress and tights with no sweater, even indoors. I guess boots would help, but again, it's still essentially a thin, SHORT, short-sleeved dress . Still, it's fun to try and get a sense of what might work, and why or why not.

Comments, laughter are welcome.
