Jenn, I can see now the similarity in our styles. We wear a very similar color palette! It makes sense because we have very similar coloring. These outfits are very much the kind of thing I like to wear! Are you a hat wearer too?

Thanks, Mauvish! I should stop thinking of it as "plain" and start thinking of it as intentional and relaxed.

Ledonna, you've made me remember. I got into my first-ever family holiday argument when my uncle said Mr. Rogers was "stupid." I obviously rose adamantly to his defense. I think I was three or four at the time!

Style Fan - Putting the denim jacket over might make a big difference in #2. I'll try that next time I wear those colors together!

Brooklyn - Yes! KingGee looks really similar, and Carhartt is also iconic and hipsterish. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cal from Orphan Black in this brand, and I'd quite like it on him. :) Just feels too masculine for me.

Suz - It is ironic! Especially because I've been feeling less minimalist recently. My mom's passing is still having an effect on my style day-to-day, but I can feel myself begin to crave adornment and luxury again. Such is the ebb and flow of life and style.

Momo - Thank you! I think this is one reason to post WIWs... it keeps you doing those little things that are so easy to forget and make such a difference!

You do casual really well! I don't find the outfits plain, there is something you do in each that boosts the look,

I want to see the outfits with that poncho!!

And I'm echoing Brooklyn in all remarks. My fave here is #3 and you have fantastic casual style.

Ironic that as maximalism heats up you show minimalist outfits. But the thing is, this makes perfect sense in a climate for layers. You wear the simple at home and add pieces for going out. I almost never wear toppers in the house in spring or fall, yet I do need them outdoors (and they complete the outfit). Scarves and wraps fill a similar role. Jewellery can feel fussy indoors when you're working around the house. And so it goes!

Jenn, I don't know Carhartts, being an innocent Aussie and all. But I am going to take a wild guess based on a quick but penetrating glance at their website and say they are the equivalent to a brand here called King Gee.
http://www.kinggee.com.au/womens/pants.html
It is a workwear brand.
But quite iconic really. Very much like Blundstone. And I am told on this forum that blunnies are super trendy now.
Ergo, your chinos could actually be the trendy item that will be sought out by hipsters of tomorrow. You should persevere with them, they look good

La Pedestrienne - I really think Mr. Rogers was onto something, making that transition from outside to home with softer, more comfortable clothing. I think I'm willing to put more time into outfits/accessories on busy days because I know I'll be seeing more people, so the effort seems more worthwhile. I work from home, so there are many days when the only people I see are my husband and my son (okay, and my Starbucks barista).

JAileen - I will try to get a pic of a poncho outfit soon. I think Brooklyn hit on why I didn't like outfit #2 as much. It just felt a little muddy. That olive tee is a dupe of the black one in #3 and I felt like, the way the light hit it, it emphasized all the flaws the black one just glides over.

Brooklyn - I've actually worn those chinos in both the ways you suggest, and they're okay. I just don't love the color the way I thought I would. They feel kind of like Carhartts to me.

Colette - I need some indoor sneakers to toss from hand to hand. ;)

Angie - Thank you! I could have guessed that would be your favorite. :)

Sara - I liked your teal version much better than my olive one!

Firecracker - I liked #3 too, and if it had been a little cooler, I could have happily popped a hat and jacket or poncho over for a bit more finished of a look. Your poncho looks even lighter than mine, so I bet you could wear it as a scarf, as well! I have found mine really handy for keeping in my bag to pull out for AC or cooler parts of the day. It's nice to have an interesting layer that packs up in such a small, neat way.

You have great casual style. I laughed when I read your description of outfit 2. I like the lace trimmed tank showing at the neck of the pullover. My favorite of the three you've shown on is #3, your comfort outfit--simple, relaxed, and so cool with the rolled jeans and oxfords. I like the skirt ensemble and the poncho over skinnies, too.
Your mention of this poncho reminds me: I copied you subconsciously and splurged on an Eileen Fisher poncho recently. Mine is a dark, cool olive hemp knit with a waffle texture. I really like it. I've worn it once so far, at home. The knit tends to catch on things easily, so I'll have to be a little careful about where I wear it. I had to take it off while I was doing something around the house--I don't recall what.

I second JAileen! I wanna see the poncho, especially outfit 4. I like no 1 and 3. 3 is my fave. I think maybe putting the top and bottoms together in no 2 has skewed the colour palette a little too muddy/earthy? Earthy colours can be tricky. I think adding some white/ivory can give earthy colours a lift. Or teaming with more black (eg the top in no 3) for a more edgy look. Both items look good to me on their own. And your hair is looking so fab.

Hah! Love your Mr. Rogers reference! My favorite part of the program as a kids was trying to guess which color cardigan he'd pick. I always rooted for the orange one. ;)

Also -- plain? To me it looks like you've nailed the minimalist aesthetic. There are superbly simple ensembles.

The connection between maximal outfits and busy days is interesting... I wonder if there's a psychological boost? Almost like having an extra cup of coffee or something...

Somehow, I managed to only snap photos of the plainest of my outfits this past week...maybe because I tend to dress more maximally on my busier out-and-about days.

#1 Olive cargos, crochet-top tank, ballet flats, denim jacket. I replaced the jacket with a cardigan at home, which made me feel a little like Mr. Rogers changing his coat at the beginning of each show.

#2 Ochre chinos, olive linen tee with black lace-trimmed tank, gold-toed boots. Except for the boots, this was a combination of some of my least-favorite wardrobe items. I'm not sure why I thought that was a good idea.

#3 Cropped jeans, black linen tee, Frye oxfords. Comfort clothing.

#4-5 Since I didn't manage to take photos of them, I'm including two Closetspace ensembles I wore this week, both with my EF poncho. I wore the poncho only for the cool mornings and took it off for the afternoons. #4 was a winner that I'll definitely wear again. #5 felt quite maximal with the embroidered top peeking out beneath the interestingly-dyed poncho as I moved.
