Hmm. Looks like the jury generally feels these are too long…

Janet: Hi twin! On adding something unexpected: I really like to have something “different” about all my items that when added up give that JIE factor to an outfit that is still reads as native to its environment. It’s so much more fun than the very plain, basic things I used to rely on because I spent so little on clothes, but then I’d have to work to jazz up because boring! And then I’d end up with a bunch of that and some wild statement items. No harmony in that closet.

Your outfit is sleek and lovely! It would be great if mine fit as well as yours. Your question about sizing down...I don’t think there would be room for my butt if I did? My lower half is “top-heavy,” if you will, with narrow calves. But maybe, just maybe, these would ride a bit higher at another time in the month. I didn’t notice a lot of stretch or bagging…it’s just me being swamped by lower-leg fabric, I’m sure. (PSA, the Gap also has a more tapered, two-tone “girlfriend” version that I missed out on--petites just about sold out--and the word on that one was that buyers *should* size down. There are no reviews on our version at all.)

Suz: Thanks for your thoughtful feedback! I have no idea why straight legs are so challenging for some of us. Remember when that was pretty much the only cut jeans came in? No wonder I hated pants shopping back then. And no petites. One inseam for everyone = 6” too long for me.

jacquez: I’m not much for nostalgia wear either! I’m super, super glad that there are other choices besides the jeans I had to wear in high school. I love me some retro, but in that area, I think a lot of us prefer styles that we never had the chance to try in our own pasts.

Cerinda: Thanks for the kind words! I love mixology, don’t you? :)

RobinF: Thank you! It’s just so hard to photo black items, you know how it is. Oh--and at this art fair, I had a selection of small paintings on paper. But such events will only be a rare once in a while...not my preferred venue.

Diane: I will take your pro eye under advisement!

I’ll experiment with these a bit more and consider shortening them (gah). I really appreciate everyone’s input!

Love the tops and the jeans, but I think I agree with others that a couple of inches off the length would be fab.

Love these jeans, but agree they should be shorter. I really like your mix of the embroidered sweater and the black top, I thought it was all one top at first. What do you sell at art fairs?

I love seeing these jeans on folks!

I got them but they're packed up to return -- I put them on and loved the fit and look, but then realized that I felt MUCH too retro in them -- I wore that exact silhouette, with the frayed ends, through high school. And I wouldn't be 15 again for anything, so back they go.

But I envy all you folks looking so great in them.

I like what you say about these jeans being interesting enough to work as your single straight legs. I also find straight legs a bit hard to wear. I wonder why that is? I like your plan to wear these with lower vamp shoes, too. I agree they could be shortened a bit. I think the vertical line makes them work well with a longer top as you tried here.

Hey jeans twin! It is a good casual outfit, and I like how the two-tone denim adds something unexpected to the simple top-and-jeans formula. I did something similar -- I never posted a WIW, but a couple of days ago I wore the exact outfit I posted when I was trying on the jeans (pictured here), except I left the top untucked.

Do you feel like you could have sized down in those jeans? They definitely have a different fit on you than on me, but I should be used to jeans looking roomy on others and like skinnies on me. As the day went on, mine stretched just enough to make me wonder if I could have sized down, especially since I am trying to lose a few extra pounds right now. Did yours stretch?

And it's interesting that you said "casual," since I struggle with feeling too dressy here. My lifestyle hardly ever calls for it, but my background and tastes skew me that way a bit. This outfit felt like it struck a comfy balance between them, hmm. Thanks for the thought!

So...over the very busy last several months, I've collected a handful of potential WIW pix and seem to have hit a spot where I have a little more time to actually post them. As I do so over time, you may notice that I just might have a FFBO thing going on with something that tends to happen a lot when I don't have much time to really dig into outfit creation. See if you can guess what it is? :P

All right then, here's WIW yesterday as a vendor at an art fair booth.

Betsey Johnson embroidered cardi (bot 2003, secondhand)

WHBM tank tunic with chiffon front drape and satin neckline (2015), worn over ASOS cropped tee (2016)

petite Gap two-tone straight-leg jeans (lemming)

Fluevog Sandra low/semi-flat mary janes (2015)

turquoise and gray pearl earrings (2010 maybe?)

Notes: this outfit is a good example of the blend of old with new that I like to do. I'll hold on to items I like, even if I don't wear them for many years (to wear them again at some point, not for nostalgia). Also, I'm more open to mixing and matching item proportions and cuts than I used to be and find it fun to do, though of course the experiments don't always work. And also waist surrendering, which can be risky on my shape, but I've been doing it a bit more anyway.

You may notice that these jeans, though the petite version, are still pretty long on me. I don't have the leg line of the lovely Janet and certainly not of the Gap model either. Straight legs have historically not been my most flattering. I deem these just JFE, I guess, and JIE--just interesting enough--to be useful as the only straight leg jeans in my closet. I actually see an ironic perk to these: they aren't the best with most of my bootlet-type footwear, but they turn out, I think, to work fairly OK with lower-vamp styles and such and are encouraging me to wear those more than I have been. So...yay?
