<p><div>I love your&nbsp;fichu-layering (always have), also the scarf/hood combo.&nbsp; How did you wrap it? (And previous outfit: what a&nbsp;gorgeous swan sweater + colour, and I love the&nbsp;combo of&nbsp;updo + sweater&nbsp;neckline.)<br /></div>

<p>Thanks Celia! I agree that Claire &amp; Jaimie are very enjoyable, and that Jamie is very progressive for the 18th century. I think the show makes that clear, in how much he stands out from the rest of the Highlanders group!</p>
<p>And I'll definitely add Agent Carter to my watch list.

<p>I love your outfit. But I am a plaid lover so maybe I am suspicious.<br />
About the books...I read the book before I started watching the show. I am usually very character driven and both Claire and Jammie are rich , believable ,and enjoyable characters. Sometimes we tend to judge historical personages by modern standards ( and Claire does it by 40's standards) but Jamie is pretty progressive for his time.<br />
Did Black Jack have to be so rotten ? Probably not. But I do find interesting the tormented relationship of love/hate with Jamie.<br />
Does the tv show have to be so explicit? Honestly I shudder just thinking how certain latter scenes are going to be portrayed.<br />
But it has been a fair adaptation of the book.<br />
I recommend Agent Carter. The aesthetics of it is beautiful imo , Carter is a smart and accomplished woman and the episodes are enjoyable.

<p><div>Thanks Sara! I definitely felt like me, not like a costume. The TV series so far is quite generous to Frank!</div><div><br /></div><div>Aww: thank you Viva! As I mentioned further up, these are really adventure stories as much as romance ones. I’m more into the TV show than the books though, which almost never happens (confirmed bookworm here)!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thnx Beth Ann! And I’m glad you felt I talked about Outlander fairly. I definitely think this inspiration will come out frequently in my fall/winter dressing. And so far here, spring’s been more wintry than anything, so I might be able to sneak in a few more outfits before it warms up. :D</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Mona. Yep, Diana Gabaldon is the author &amp; Outlander is the first in the series. &nbsp; From what I recall, the first book has a fairly cliffhanger-esque ending, so you might want to make sure you can get your hands on the second somehow before committing.</div><div><br /></div><div>&nbsp;Her writing isn’t like Donna Tart’s though! I’d be happy to recommend some books for your reading list if you tell me some of your favourite books/authors (reader advisory is a hobby of mine, hehe).</div><div><br /></div><div>Thimblelina, do you mean you only liked the first episode of the show? Or just that you’ll only enjoy it as long as they stick with the first book. I’m very curious to see what they’re going to do about the later books, without giving anything spoiler-y away, it seems like it’d be a bit of a challenge for a TV show. But I browsed that costume designer blog I linked to &amp; it sounds like they’re going to France in season 2! So that should be fun. :D</p>
<p>I agree that the TV adaptation has done a great job portraying the complexities of their relationship. The scenes were a bit *too* explicit for my tastes, but both actors are very attractive for sure! And I liked how they showed the emotional intimacy too, in glances.</div>

<p>Great outfit!<br />
Just like with the books, I completely lose interest after the first installment.<br />
(But tell me that slow burn building up to Claire's wedding night with Jamie isn't just the sexiest thing ever. I thought the film adaptation was brilliant in capturing how conflicted but attracted they both feel toward the other.)

<p>The outfit looks amazing on you. Love the pattern and shape of the skirt. I am now very intrigued about the book series and the show. I have never heard of it before but after finishing Goldfinch, I was wondering what to read next. The only thing I could find in my local library was a novel named Outlander written by Diana Gabaldon. Is it the same? I don't think they have the whole series though.

<p>Amazing adaptation of a terrific piece of inspiration!&nbsp; I've watched just a few of the Outlander episodes -- and liked and disliked the same elements as you have discussed here.&nbsp; I think you've also managed to pull off a very cohesive and practical look, despite the number of details you have going, and the overall effect seems very natural on you.&nbsp; I think you might find some more inspiration from the show -- particularly for the winter months!

<p>I love the entire look, with my favorite pieces being the most delicate (the beautiful lace top) and the most sturdy (the everlasting knee socks). Your style is really like storytelling, E. It's always such a wonder to behold.</p>
<p>My sister (a book lover, like me) has been trying to get me to read these books for ages, and now she is hounding me to watch the show. It's not my genre, but perhaps I am going to have to give in after all.

<p>I love your outfit and think it really fits with your style.&nbsp; I don't find it particularly costume-y but maybe that depends on how you feel in the outfit.&nbsp;&nbsp;Does it feel like 'you' or like a costume?</p>
<p> I tried to read the Outlander books because a friend of a friend's aunt is the author but just couldn't get into them.&nbsp; Not sure why since I love historical romances.&nbsp; Part of my problem was the poor husband that got left in modern times.&nbsp; I just couldn't forget about him enough to enjoy the romance between Claire and Jamie.

<p>Aliona, I’d certainly be curious to hear what a Scot makes of it! They do have the Scottish characters speaking Gaelic fairly often, which I think is a plus. Tell your husband it’s really an adventure show, not a romance. I think it’d appeal to both genders, to be honest!<div><br /></div><div>Glad to reassure you Ruth. ;)</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Caro! I agree that this jacket makes everything better. So far the show is quite true to the book, so no need to read them!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thnx AM! :D</div><div><br /></div><div>Oh thank you Angie!!! I will wear the crown with pride. :DDD</div><div><br /></div><div>Diana, I really like your thoughts &amp; definitely think they make sense. So costume-y for me would be doing, say, a dominatrix-inspired look, which I’m shuddering just thinking about. Or even a Helmut Lang-esque outfit, to be less extreme; I’d feel very uncomfortable in that, and I suspect it would fight with the lines of my body &amp; face &amp; not reflect any aspects of my personality/life. Lots to think about! And thank you for the compliment at the end; it made me feel great. :D</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Tulle, as ever, for your detailed &amp; interesting comment! I hadn’t thought about how remoteness would affect style…although there were quite a few connections between Scotland and France, so I imagine the Scottish aristocracy would’ve been kept fairly abreast of ‘trends,’ which is different from the everyday Highland people. I wonder how quickly the empire waisted muslin frock fashion spread across the Highlands though after the French revolution; I’m guessing quite slowly. I can’t imagine wanting to wear diaphanous white fabric in the Scottish climate!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thnx Shevia. :)</div><div><br /></div><div>Rabbit, I covet that cowl, and now plan to knit one! Although mine won’t be identical, because I don’t want to knit with the giant needles it would take to get stitches that big. I figure I can make it look just as chunky &amp; rustic with regular yarn!</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, I agree that the show has incredibly good writing &amp; acting. I didn’t realise it was made by the same people as BSG, but I can see the quality, attention to detail, and willingness to have strong, atypical women are common to both shows. I’ll have to try Agent Carter; unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s on Netflix anymore (boo!), but hopefully it’ll come back soon. I just finished the second season of Orphan Black, so I definitely need another female-lead show!</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, I’d love to see your winter looks inspired by Claire, as I imagine they’d look quite different from mine!</div><div><br /></div>

<p>Ah Claire! &nbsp; I had this look below pinned as one of my winter inspiration looks (but didn't end up wearing many earth tones and skirts), glad you picked up the mantle!&nbsp;</p>
<p>I've listened to&nbsp;almost all of the books (bailed about halfway through book 7, but may resume). &nbsp; And though they definitely have problematic aspects, there are a few things the author does very well,&nbsp;rich&nbsp;historical detail being one of the main pluses. &nbsp; &nbsp;I actually am liking the show more than the books so far, the acting and writing is so high quality, and it does subvert some standard romance tropes in fun ways. &nbsp; Not surprising as it has the same show-runners as BSG. &nbsp;</p>
<p>I love your&nbsp;interpretation, especially with the outer layers. &nbsp; You really capture the contrast between the hardy and delicate in the clothing of the time (lace and beaten wool and leather), and it doesn't feel costume-y because it's your style aesthetic and the pieces and silhouettes you prefer.</p>
<p>I also recommend Agent Carter (also on Amazon and netflix streaming now) for another great historical female-lead fantasy&nbsp;show, this one set right after WWII.</p>

<p>You've caught the spirit of Highland clothing (where 18th dress persisted a bit longer than most places, thanks to the remoteness of many places) so nicely! Especially clever of you to realize that a snug, cropped sweater over a lacy blouse would create the look of an 18th century bodice without being overly literal, and the tartan skirt and muted palette are just right, too. The velvet jacket and wrap create another layer for this wonderful look, and the earrings are lovely.&nbsp; Keep dreaming, E!

<p>(I'm back to say something constructive about the outfit, rather than just ranting about the book...)</p>
<p>As I mentioned in my first reply, this does not look costumey to me. But a large part of it is due to the fact that YOU are wearing it. For you, this feels very authentic and organic, like a natural extension of your style, whereas it WOULD look costumey on someone else. To me, the idea of costuming involves pretending, taking on an inauthentic identity. Now obviously you are not an eighteenth century Scotswoman, but at least on terms of style, you share a lot of aspects. Does that make any sense at all?</p>
<p>Also, I think you have a keen eye for subtlety. This is evocative without veering into caricature or cliche.

<p>Love that skirt on you, E. From the little I know about the series, your outfit looks like a wonderful interpretation. How fun that you tried this -- and you definitely succeeded in creating a current look. My colleague is always trying to get me to watch the series as I'm from Scotland. I'd like to give it a try, but DH isn't too interested ;)</p>
<p>And I think the golden lighting just adds to the look.

<p>Thank you Ruth! I didn’t wear my socks for many years, because after England we moved to Texas, and they disappeared in a moving box. So I’ve only been wearing them for the last 4 years or so, but they’re made of sturdy wool. I launder them on the hand wash cycle of a machine &amp; dry them flat. I did now that the thistle is the Scottish national flower, but I named my Thistle because when I got her, the rescue group had given her a very unfortunate haircut: super short everywhere except the top of her head, which was left long &amp; poofy. Rather like a certain plant. I adore Scotland though, so the Scottish flavour definitely was an added bonus! The pup is good, she just got cropped out. Here’s the uncropped photo, with her peering at me from behind the chair. That’s her new station, for whatever reason!</p>
<div><br /></div><div>Anyway, thank you for all of the detailed feedback. Fichu was a new word for me too, but now I want to work it into casual conversation! (Doesn’t it sound like it should be a small scurrying animal somehow? A fluffier cousin of the haggis perhaps…hehe).</div><div><br /></div><div>Astrid, I tease my mom now that she gave them to me to read when I was 14 or 15! Luckily I was an intelligent teenager, so they didn’t go to my head. I’m sure you were fine reading them too!</div><div><br /></div><div>Diana, I had to google to figure out what you were talking about! It hasn’t happened in the first 8 episodes (that I watched) &amp; I don’t even remember that in the book (which I read 13-14 years ago now), but I bet if I were reading them for the first time now, that could well make me fed up. It’ll be interesting to see how I react to it in the tv show; so far they’ve done a good job, imo.</div><div><br /></div><div>Diane, thank you! The books are quite popular, so worth giving a go. After all, it’s easy to abandon them if they’re not to your taste. (My own favourite author for romantic time travel is Susanna Kearsley: she’s much more tame and does a great job of creating characters you’re really invested in &amp; bringing the time periods to life.)</div><div><br /></div><div>Lyn, you made me laugh about your mom! I’m glad you’re a fan of the TV series too. They seem to be adapting the books very slowly, drawing the story out, which I think makes a nice change from typical book to screen adaptations. And I like that they’ve kept Claire’s narrative voice!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you RachyLou. :D</div></p>

<p>It's not actually the Black Jack thing that made me fling the book down in disgust.&nbsp; It's the, ah, discipline scene.&nbsp; (Which google tells me was in fact also shown in the TV show, and incited, as expected, controversy.)&nbsp; </p>
<p></p>
<p>ETA: I don't usually have such visceral reactions to scenes in books.&nbsp; I don't know why this one in particular got to me.&nbsp; I guess I figure that if the book/author is good enough that I care about what happens to the characters, there will be some redeeming scene later on?&nbsp; Nope, never happened here IMO.&nbsp; </p>

<p>Yes, I agree with you, at least as far as I can remember. The stories are rather hazy in my mind, I've just read the books the once quite a long time ago. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it - they were probably not age appropriate reading material.
