Awful about kids throwing rocks at birds. That tells me something about what their parents teach them about relationships between weak & strong.

Katerina, somehow I missed your comment! Thank you for you kind comments. I guess it *is* a capsule based on the striped top.

FashIntern, I didn't think that at all. I'm glad you thought it was okay.

Karen, it sounds like a lot of us have multiple outfits in a day. In the morning I think about what's ahead and try to have the basics work, even if I change some of it. As to the poor bird, people don't think of them as living beings. I see kids throwing rocks at them all the time.

This is such a useful post! I often punt on my attire for a portion of my day and devolve to casual schlub. I often wear 2-4 distinct outfits a day. I love all of these and especially the way you transition.

So sad about the scoter. I was by the aqua range on the 29th for an A Capella group concert (fun! I need to see more shows in that gorgeous theatre) and saw people driving golf balls at 11 pm. I hope it was an unlucky accident.

Oh no—I hope you didn’t think I meant your outfits are bland. Not at all! I meant that for me, the effect of a wardrobe where I could spend months doing what you did that day, because everything was the same color scheme and compatible shapes, would get boring over time. Your day looks great—who’d want to spend half their time in the closet with your activities from that day to get to?

Joy, I usually don't participate in the Christmas counts, because I get too cold. But this year I kept track of what showed up at our feeders, and my husband added the numbers to the overall count. I had some birds that the person who covered our neighborhood didn't see, plus one bird that we'd never seen in our yard before, a brown creeper.

Smittie, my activities vary a lot. Somedays I stay at home, and other days I'm out and about. But most days start with the dogs.

Sarah, it made me very sad. I think some people intentionally aim for the birds. We get Steller's Jays in our yard in the winter.

Shevia, thank you.

Handsome bird! Sorry to hear about the casualty. Wish we humans could be better at sharing our habitat. All my birder friends are ruefully lamenting that their first bird of 2018 was a crow. Mine was either that or a steller's jay.

Ah, now I see why you need a good mix and match wardrobe. It does make it easy to switch outfits without a complete dissassemble/reassemble rigmarole :-). I like all your outfits but do like the first one with the leather jacket and funky scarf the best because of the pattern mixing.

I do this almost daily too. You look stylish and appropriate for each activity. Most of my bird watching had been at our feeders and heated birdbath lately. Lots of nuthatches, gold and house finches, hawks, juncos and a couple different kinds of chick-a-dees.

Barbara, thank you. It was a busy but interesting day.

Fashintern, I think it would have been bland without a scarf. I hope it wasn't, anyway.

Emily, your post inspired me to post this. During the week, the first thing I do is walk the dogs. I wear the Salomons with hiking socks. I like them because they are waterproof and have good traction most of the time. Then, if I go out, I tend to put on boots that the socks work with. They are too thick with these navy booties. So I guess footwear drives my outfit, too.

Rachy, thank you. I especially love the second scarf. You can see that the first one has a mind of its own.

Angie, thank you. I'm glad you approve.

Sarah, thank you. We went specifically to see a white winged scoter (this is a stock photo, although my husband's pictures were at least as good). It's not an endangered species, but it's unusual in our area. Because it was the last day of the year, my husband wanted to add it to his bird count for the year. Then he went back the next day to add it to his 2018 count, but it was dead. Unfortunately it was at an aqua driving range. I think it was hit by a golf ball.

How great to have a wardrobe that so easily allows you to move between activities.

I love that you changed your scarf for lunch with your CASA kid, that just seems so thoughtful.

Yes...this is how it goes for me, too! My daily outfit is more like a little constellation of things. I usually have at least three distinct parts to my day: Bundling up for outdoors/dogwalking, casual at-home time, and put-together for shopping. If we go out to dinner, that might constitute a fourth look...or might preempt the put-together for shopping look (because I probably wouldn't choose to do both). A couple of times per week, the day gets even weirder if I dress for the gym. Quite some time ago, Suz commented that her necessarily casual footwear (sturdy, weather appropriate, walking shoes for commuting on foot) were driving her outfits. This rings true with me as well. The footwear choice drives my choice of pants, for sure, which ends up affecting other outfit elements. I'm going to try outfit tracking this year by making daily ensembles in "Finds". (Per kkards example!) The ensembles are going to include all the clothes worn--I hope it will be somewhat easy to discern the various outfit components. Good job on spending time with your CASA kid! EVERYONE needs someone who cares. Will you keep up a relationship, do you think, even after he "graduates" from the system?

Good point about mix & match/ everything working together. I'm somewhere in the middle--don't want rigid outfits, but would find a wardrobe where everything worked with everything else too bland for me. That said, it's great that you could flex throughout your day; these outfits all look great and fit their purposes well.

I thought I would go ahead and post this after reading Emily's wardrobe post. On New Year's Eve I had four outings, and my outfit was slightly different for each one. The only constant was my striped top, and the general color scheme.

1. Church - Cole Haan navy leather jacket, dark wash jeans, Lands End striped shirt, silk butterfly scarf (from NAS), navy suede booties, navy Sak guitar strap bag.

2. Lunch with my CASA kid - I changed the scarf to a cotton one, for a more casual look. He likes Buffalo Wild Wings which is very casual. We ended up going somewhere else, though.

3. Birding with my husband - I changed to lighter wash jeans, Kuhl navy quilted jacket, Salomon hiking shoes, binoculars, no bag.

4. Shopping outing with my husband - I changed back to the suede booties.

I think this is why everything has to work with everything else. Comments welcome.
