The black coat and the pink pea jacket are both wonderful on you. The black is an elegant classic you can wear for any occasion, and the pink is a vibrant spirit lifter for long cold Winters. I would think that, with the addition of a (not too short) down puffer, you'll be set.

Agree with all that the black coat looks better, but that double-cloth wool without Thinsulate wouldn't be warm enough for the dead of winter. But then, even regular wool with Thinsulate wouldn't be warm enough for me in Maine. (I think my Lady Day without Thinsulate works only till somewhere in the 40s, my hooded stadium-cloth coat takes me to just around freezing, and my down coat comes out for everything colder.) Would you consider the duffle coat, which looks a bit warmer than the colorblock coat? I firmly believe that if you live in Maine, you're not only allowed but in fact required to invest in multiple coats.

Thanks for that sizing info. Hmm...I wonder if I should go with the 4 for layering? I will consider. If I could try one on, it would truly help. But I can't do that easily.

My Hilary Radley winter coat is a 4. I layer under it and like being able to do that. My Vince Camuto peacoat is XS and it is snug -- I can and do layer under it but it's very fitted.

Spending on coats is very wise. Coats in our climate are a necessity!!

I liked this collarless black coat better than the others. I'm glad you're planning to keep it. And it would be fine around the neck with a nice warm scarf ((I could see a colorful fringed item for the non austere days, and a heavy knit funnel in light gray for the simpler looks.

You could consider keeping an ultra - light nanopuff type vest in this or another coat as a sub for the missing insulation, if the collar didn't stick up too much.

My yellow pea coat like yours is also 6, I could do 4 and also think Suz could do 2.

Suz, I think you would be a 2 in the peacoat. I am wearing a 6. I sized up to fit bulky sweaters underneath and it works well and I could have worn a 4 also, but trimmer. The color is not neon at all -- it's a deep, warm magenta/bubblegum. To me, it's the perfect blue-pink.

Thinking I will keep the black collarless (I do really really love its austerity), and then either get a warmer wool or a nicer mid-length puffer. Or maybe both. I think I may have to put a hold on most other purchasing this fall/winter -- maybe just one fun sweater -- and put all my money into coats. But that's probably okay, right? :)

Vivian, I love the black collarless. Very dressy and can also be worn more casually. Sleek and sophisticated. You need a warmer coat also, but this is worth keeping. You would have it a long time.

GREAT booties, too!

So, what is the sizing like on the J. Crew pea coat? I'm considering finding this colour on ebay if I can. But I don't actually know my size. I suspect I am a 2 but can't be sure.

Is the colour super super neon in person? I also worry about that. But love the pink!

How cold does it get where you live? Do you get much snow? Those coats would never warm enough for winter where I live, so I would be dependent on a puffer (like you say you are getting) or multiple puffers (which I have). Having said that, I really love the black coat, it has great lines, and versatility. I also love the color of the pink pea coat. It looks fun.

I usually try to find a coat with a hood, or a large collar that can be pulled up to keep weather out. IMO, scarves. hats, and other substitutes just don't work the same. I am mostly practical when it comes to coats. Can you move your arms comfortably, can you fit them over your clothes/sweaters, will they keep you warm and dry, will they be too heavy or bulky to hang on the hook you have for them at your workplace, and then do they look good. Not much of a fashion response - sorry.

When it gets cold do you go straight to the puffer? I see the peacoat and the black coat as filling two different functions. In my climate, the peacoat would be used in early fall/late spring, the black coat would be used late fall/early spring, wool/puffery coats for winter, and trenches for late spring. If you don't have a huge window in which a lighter, long wool coat gets used I would keep ONE (the black one!! totally amazing looking on you). The gray is pretty fun too, but looks quite a lot more casual.

Worried now. I do really love the black coat but comments about the wind and cold and my neck are not without merit, and JSloane is right; it's not heavyweight (and no Thinsulate).

I love the black coat on you and it fits your style, but really looks more like a lightweight topper (of course I can't feel it). I would be concerned about wind getting in under the scarf you must wear without a collar. Am I just projecting too much cold? The hooded coat will cover more of your neck and head when it's cold and does look comfy as a robe, but maybe a slightly more stylish version would suit your style better. Both have a good length for covering the lower regions which I find important in your temps.
killer booties!

Ok I'm going to go out and say I like both coats. However, the black is definitely sleeker and probably more versatile. I think this one is definitely more in your style direction. (The grey one does look cozy ).

I have way too many JCrew coats, assembled over the years. I have the lady day coat, also, in burgundy. I sized up one size last winter, and it is still really too tight around my ribs. I wish I'd exchanged it because I can't button it. (If I could just pay permanent attention to the pilates teacher when she tells me to compress my costal arch!) And I got that peacoat in a light lemon color a couple of years ago ... it gets tons of compliments because of the color.

I like the black coat on you, too. It looks dressier and more elegant.

The grey one does look practical though - comfy and warm with a hood. I hate my puffer coat as I feel like the Stay Puff marshmallow man in it, but it's essential for Michigan winters, so I wear it nonstop for 3-4 months.

The J Crew peacoat is fun! The pink is great for cold and dark winter days. I don't think it would be as warm as the other coats though (at least not for your bottom!).

Thanks everyone. I love how the grey feels, but sort of like how I love how a bathrobe feels, haha. I'm really loving the black collarless, and I'm happy no one feels it's too minimal or bland for me. I agree with Kristin that it can dress up or down, and while I'm no scarf expert I have several that I love and this coat feels like a nice blank canvas. I've actually never owned a black coat, and something about this one feels very dramatic and mature in a good way -- like I could wear it for a long time.

Lisap, the boots are actually very very dark brown and kind of a shiny leather, almost like an eelskin. They're very fun. Almost have a Victorian flair.

Dee, thanks for the note about the peacoat pic! Also, DH would totally agree with you and Lisap about the shapeless grey coat. He was not a fan.

I also vote for the black coat. It looks sleek and modern on you. I'm not sure if trying a size down in the grey might help, but I agree with Lisa that the grey one looks a little shapeless on you.

You mentioned a pink JCrew pea coat as well, but don't see a pic of it, btw.

Hi ! 4:30 in the morning? Yikes. I wouldn't even be up. Those boots are great - really unique. Are they navy or black? The black collarless coat gets my vote . Something too shapeless about the grey...doesn't do you justice. Love the black, love it.

I much prefer the black collarless coat. It can be both casual and dressy, and will look fab with all your scarves, whether silk or wool. And goes so nicely with your new booties! The hooded coat can be only casual, in my mind.

And I really like the look of layering the sweater shell on top of another sweater, never thought of that!

I got in from this week's travel at 4:30 this morning, so PLEASE disregard the awful faces in these photos -- and also my overloading one post with all sorts of stuff. I'm conserving energy.

Wearing:
JCrew toothpick jeans
Newish (clearance) JCrew blue merino wool layering sweater
Bennetton chunky grey vest
New Everybody booties bought on recent Seattle trip (I love the dandy haberdashery look of these booties)

In the coat pics, I am showing the pink Jcrew peacoat that I own. This is really my only winter coat right now (remember, I live in Maine) and I am planning to get a new puffer this year. So the question is, do I keep either/both/neither of these other new coats? I have my thoughts but would like to hear yours.

First up: grey colorblock hooded stadium cloth from JCrew
Second: black collarless double cloth coat from JCrew

(As an aside, I tried the JCrew Lady Day coat and it does not fit my body. Waist issues (once again.))

Look forward to your thoughts. Be honest. Thanks!
