The trick with shorts seems to be finding your sweet-spot length(s). There are a couple lengths which I LOVE to wear and make me feel fabulous (mid to upper thigh, and a little below the knee), and then a whole myriad which make me feel way off in one way or another (particularly just above the knee for some reason). An inch or two makes a surprisingly big difference. But I think that boxy+shorts look can certainly be easily emulated with cropped pants, especially if the crop is on the more cropped end, as long as the pants have a breezy feel to them and you've got breezy footwear (all to kinda give the same "free legs" feel).

bionda, yes, that top is from Garnet Hill. I ordered the navy one as well, but sent it back because I didn't like it quite as much as the mushroom color. My top feels a little bit as well, but I think the next size down probably wouldn't have the right boxy feel. It's a struggle to get used to this shape, though. Being a pear/hourglass, my instinct is to always accent my waist

Aida, that outfit of yours with the shorts and the blue, boxy top is one of my favorites. I find shorts really challenging for myself.

Thanks, JAileen. The shoes are, of course, a statement piece from this season, while the kimono was one of my statements added late last spring. Fun to wear them together.

celia, I still have major mixed feelings about the bangs. Argh.

Great outfits! I have the same cropped top in navy stripe and the rose color. Garnet Hill, right? I like the fit of yours - I think I got mine too large. I've been wearing them backwards, which seems to look better on me.

Beautiful picture of your mother, and sweet memory of stealing her shirt.

Nice! Good to have new additions come out right away, that's a good sign. The boxy cropped silhouette is definitely nice for a breezy summer feel, I think you'll enjoy it (I like mine best with shorts so all the visible leg offsets the boxiness up top). Great moody colors in the second outfit, while still looking springy. PS Love the hair.

Thanks, smittie! I think I like my hair better down without the bangs and up better with them. I'm still not thrilled with the look/maintenance, but I'm going to keep them for the summer, grow out the length a little more, and re-evaluate come fall. There's something to be said for trying something different, even if it's not your best look ever.

I LOVE that cropped top on you. The proportions are so good.
I also really like your hair the way you've done it here (up). The bangs look GREAT! I
Your mother is so pretty. You look like her! She looks nice in that pink shade.

Greyscale, thank you! The fact that I've already worn every new addition is a good sign!

Joy, I don't have anything in that color, but honestly, I didn't borrow it for the color. It was that it looked like these Banana Republic shirts that everyone at my school was wearing that year. Back then, BR put their tags on the outside back, though, so everyone could tell you were wearing a knockoff. When I got the real thing for Christmas that year, mine was red. :)

Brooklyn, I like the leg line in the shorter tops, too, but I find them difficult to wear because of the length of my torso. Feels like a catch-22. I have (proportionally) shorter legs, so it's nice to use tops to play with the ratios, but shorter tops risk exposing skin where I don't want it exposed. (And yes, I look more and more like my mom as I get older. In this photo, she was probably 5 years younger than I am now.)

Lovely Jenn. I like 2 the best. I think the shorter tops are flattering on you. They emphasise your leg line. And I can see the likeness with your mother.

You look fab in every outfit and your hair worn up is really cute. Your mother is lovely. I can understand why you borrowed the pink top. Do you have something that shade of pink now?

The locket is wonderful. I like #2 and probably #3 the best, not that there is anything wrong with #1 . Are you getting used to your bangs?
And am I crazy or is that your mom's name in Hebrew on her necklace?

A couple WIWs with pieces from my summer update. First wears for a lot of items!

#1 Striped tee (1 wear), cropped jeans (75 wears), leather Chucks (14 wears), tassel necklace (62 wears)

This was a comfortable outfit for work-at-home and errands. The cropped, boxy top is a new silhouette for me this season, and I think it's going to be wonderfully breezy for the summer, though it's a move away from conventional figure flattery.

#2 Linen shell (1 wear), cropped trousers (8 wears), Sevilla Smith flats (4 wears), locket necklace (heirloom, 55 wears from me), fitness tracker bracelet (1 wear)

#3 with silk kimono (6 wears) for warmth/sun protection

2/3 (mostly 3) were for Mother's Day brunch today. Another cropped, boxy top. The new fitness tracker bracelet was a Mother's Day gift from my husband. My locket has a photo of my grandma and grandpa inside. I inherited it from my mom, who inherited from my grandmother--seems appropriate for the day, my second Mother's Day after losing my own mother.

#4 My mom, just because I miss her. Also, I stole that shirt out of her closet all the time in jr. high.
