<p>I love mushroom and taupe! It was genius to belt the skirt, and it ends up not showing anyway--once you're all kitted out in your coat and such. I find myself loving those sportsman-like boots with the tweed skirt! The coat and hat are superb. Another scarf knot might show the front of your coat off a little better, but this is very nice. YLF, E!

<p>What a nice thing to say Denise! Thank you. I think my generational norm is skinnies &amp; whatever top, judging from what I've seen others wearing around here. I'm not sure though! lol

<p>BJ, I love crones too &amp; retellings that reimagine the villains, don’t get me wrong. :)<div><br /></div><div>Thank you Diana!</div><div><br /></div><div>Aubergine, this is my oldest scarf: I got it when I was studying abroad in Russia, before I knew anything about what colours suited me, and then I saw a pic of myself wearing it and was so surprised at how good it looked. So it has good memories! I’d be way too nervous to cook any mushrooms I found, but I wish I knew enough to go hunting for them. Maybe I’ll join y local mycology group.</div><div><br /></div><div>Frannie, I bet you looked good. Yay for race support!</div><div><br /></div><div>Windchime, it was quite windy too, so I was glad I’d dressed in layers! Luckily the sun came out though, so it was’t that bad. These boots were a Christmas gift from my mom a few years ago, after she’d seen me admiring them, and I *still* love their combination of practical and cool looking. Go LL Bean! ;)</div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks Beth Ann! The boots are 3-4 years old now I think, but they’ve held up beautifully. I can’t wait to get to wear them for such a long period. I’ve thought about taking the skirt in, but I like how the fullness is evenly distributed when I belt it paperbag style, and I’m not sure how to replicate that via sewing yet. When I get a bit more practice, I’ll get it done though. I suspect it will require removing the waistband, shortening it, gathering the skirt and lining, and then reattaching everything.</div><div><br /></div><div>Lisa, that’s so kind of you to say. I originally wanted to use the ribbon as a belt, but since this skirt doesn’t stay up on its own, I was afraid it wouldn’t be enough to keep the yards of tweed in place. But I can definitely experiment w that in the future! I didn’t have a ton of time to get ready, so I had to sort of commit to something and go if that makes sense.</div><div><br /></div><div>MG, I love that you exchange Solstice presents, much less such a neat sounding book. And I’ll have to try the double bow thing, as that sounds like a great solution!</div><div><br /></div><div>Dee, I’m definitely enjoying all of the layering possibilities! We’ll see if I’m having as much fun come March, but I suspect I will be. ;)</div><div><br /></div><div>You made me laugh Suz. Yes taupe. And yes re: length of the bow; as I mentioned to Lisa, if I’d had more time I probably would’ve fussed with it more, but as it was I had to get out the door for the race!</div><div><br /></div><div>AG, thank you for the poem link. What a hypnotic poem: very powerful! I’ve definitely used it as a waist tie in the past &amp; I’m sure I will again. That’s a fun idea to tie it around my bag!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thnx Firecracker. I liked the scarf w the jacket too, even if it was darker. :)</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Viva!</div><div><br /></div><div>Aww, you’re so sweet Alasse. :)</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Angie! You’re extending the Gretel theme, I see. j/k</div><div><br /></div><div>Thimbelina, your sentence is so evocative: morels, southern Oregon cascades…can I come? I still haven’t visited the Pacific NW, but it’s high on my wish list. And taupe skirts are wonderful: you shouldn’t part with them! :)</div><div><br /></div><div>I looked up Carl Larsson and it was fun to get a peek into his Swedish life. Thanks for mentioning him!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Hil! That’s a good point that the bow doesn’t look as integrated: I do have a long-ish pearl necklace I could try wear it with. I think the neck bow works better with my other sashes, which are wider &amp; shorter &amp; more solid feeling. I just wanted a hint of this colour so much I disregarded everything else. ;)</div>

<p>I truly love 6 &amp; 7 - absolutely storytale gorgeous. I also have mixed feelings about the bow. It kinda looks like it was plonked there as an afterthought where everything else you wear is so carefully curated. But I love that you wear it because you love it. I almost want to weave and your ribbons with some beads or pearls to ground it a bit.

<p>I know you lurves your neck bows, and it would be a shame to alter that beautiful (and sentimental sash).&nbsp; How about a double bow?&nbsp; Tie your first bow and then take the long ends and make a second bow.&nbsp; Takes a bit of practice but, once you get the hang of it, you have a 4 nice loops and take up a lot of the length.</p>
<p>BTW, my husband once game me a book for Solstice called "The Romance of the Fungus."&nbsp; I've stopped telling people that story because they look at me sort of pityingly, but I suspect you'll appreciate it.

<p>I read your post an hour ago or so, didn't comment, but have been thinking about it ever since . &nbsp;I love it when someone is so artistically inspired to recreate something organic into wearable fashion. &nbsp;Really , truly, artistic. &nbsp; The fabrics, colours, and styling are so perfect here ,and on you. The only thing I thought of was using the beautiful ribbon as a belt or waist tie of some sort, rather than around your neck. &nbsp;I find it distracts a little from the overall aesthetic - but totally get why you wanted to incorporate it. &nbsp;Again, I love this on you - very, very pretty

<p>You were probably the best-dressed onlooker at the race! 40° is definitely chilly for standing around ( although comfortable for the racers). Your outfit is a great example of how to layer for the cold. By the way, I really like your boots. <p>I see mushrooms growing near me every so often after it's been rainy for a while, and part of me is always tempted to pick them and cook with them. Then I realize there's a good chance they're poison.</p>

<p>Frankly, I have more sympathy for the "bad guys" in the fairy tales, esp the witches, crones and wicked stepmothers. So much more complex inner lives!

<p>Thank you Jackie! I did have fun &amp; stayed very warm. I wear skirts all winter &amp; am quite warm in them: probably because they tend to be vintage wool and full, so very insulating. And of course I wear tights on their own or in layers or over long johns. And when it's very cold (or when I want to), I just add my knee high boots and then all of me is covered just the same. :)</p>
<p>KiwiGal, I think you're right. This tie is a bit longer than my other sashes, and its length sort of annoys me. I bet I could cut it &amp; then melt the edges to prevent fraying. Hmmmm. I like ties with a collar too, but I don't wear many collars (short neck), so I usually wear them like this. I know it's not to everyone's taste, but it makes me smile. Thanks for the colour compliment. :)</p>
<p>BJ, you made me laugh so hard! Those poor misunderstood witches... I love fairy tales, so being called Gretel is quite the compliment. Though luckily I haven't gotten lost in these woods yet!

<p>It's very Gretel or at least my concept of Gretel going foraging before stumbling on the wicked witch's house, who probably was just starved for company.

<p>What a thoughtful outfit.<br />I love the wrapped up cosy version with the boots, stunning!</p>
<p>I do like the necktie but think it might be better shorter - but you probably do not want to cut the tie. &nbsp;I also tend to prefer them with a collar...so they peek out at the front.</p>
<p>You really suit these colours and since I love field mushrooms I am bound to love the combination!</p>

<p>I really appreciate reading your thoughtful approach and love the palette! Despite being in a skirt (which I always associate with being cold) you look cozy and warm! Hope the race was fun to watch!

<p>I love mushrooms, and here in this climate I always seem to stumble upon them in the woods. This outfit was inspired by the creamy whites and forest browns of those mushrooms, as well as the faded pinks the underbellies sometimes hint at. I attached a photo I recently took, to show the inspiration visually.</p>
<p>I was going to a race to support friends this morning, and as I got dressed it was 40 degrees outside. I wasn't sure how long I'd be standing outside, so I thought I should dress warmly rather than otherwise. So I opted for my brown wool tweed skirt (which requires a belt to hold it in place, hence more brown &amp; cream)&nbsp;and this sweater, a cotton/angora blend. It's slightly sheer, so I added a pink tank underneath. I also chose my very pale pink, almost white tights, in the hopes they'd be flashing colours a bit like mushrooms. Over that went long alpaca socks; they wouldn't show in my boots but of course I matched them to my skirt. I wanted a bit more pink, and Alasse has been playing with neck ties lately, so I opted for my long floppy bow. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it still makes me smile. This was my bridesmaid sash in my sister's wedding, so it brings back good memories there too. I felt suitably mushroomy &nbsp;in this, although next time I might add my mushroom brooch just for that extra touch.</p>
<p>For outdoors, I added a brown hat &amp; fingerless knits (both hand knit), my sturdy boots (the run was at a park), and a wool short peacoat since my sweater is on the thinner side but my skirt is very warm on its own. To continue the flash of pink I added the scarf, although it's much more saturated, as I don't have a pale pink option. I threw all of this back on for the pics, and I'm pretty sure it looked better when I wore it for real, instead of just trying to get everything in place as fast as possible. I think I should tie the scarf differently when I wear it with this coat though.</p>
<p>Any thoughts, feedback, and criticism is more than welcome, as always!
