We were looking at some sweaters for his mother when an SA practically shooed us away bluntly telling us that we couldn't afford them. They were in the $200 range, not thousands. We were clean and respectably dressed I thought. We didn't want to buy then and give her a commission. I've found that a good strategy for keeping myself from buying things I don't need is to dress very well when I go shopping, so that anything I see has to stand up next to something I really love. It is made from whisper thin layers of delicate silk, hand printed with a Parisian print. I almost didn't buy this dress, because the sales associate wouldn't sell it to me - wouldn't even let me try it on, in fact. It was in The Room in Toronto which is pretty hoity toity, and it was an expensive dress (nearly 3x my rent at the time), but I knew it was on serious sale and kept hounding her, but she would not confirm the price so that I could buy it. I think it was a combination of my skin colour, my age and my casual clothing. But I would not give up - finally found a sales associate to put it on hold for me and called every day for three days until they found the price for me - 90% off! Thought it was a bad experience, I still love this dress and I feel great every time I wear it.
