Una, when I look at this I am totally baffled that you struggle to get dressed, you mix things up SO WELL. But I so get you... it takes time and thought, which is often lacking in the mornings. This is a great exercise, isn't it?

This is so true: "look into my closet instead of stores for solutions to my doldrums". Actually there are about five great quotes that have come from vaious threads motivated by your challenge that I feel I should pin up on my mirror!

I love seeing you in dresses and skirts - they look wonderful on you. I second Aida's suggestion to try winter shorts, I think you'd rock them.

Una it is bonafide FUN seeing you sport so many different looks in one week, especially since you tend to skew towards uniform dressing. #1 works well with the longer sweater; if you want more conventionally flattering proportions you can semi-tuck the sweater, but I quite like this longer-torso version as a fashionable alternative. I do find #2 to look more you than #4, though you look good in both. I think for #4 you need to pop that chopped silver moto over the top For #3 I wonder if perhaps the flare of the riding jacket is what feels a bit off for you? I'm not sold on it with this particular styling. Maybe with BFs? And of course, #5 is perfectly you and I wouldn't change a thing about it.

If you're comfortable with a skirt or dress as an alternative silhouette option, I think you should look into winter shorts. That seems more you, and you get the same sort of silhouette break from pants. They don't have to be short, they could be longer. And you've got a longer legline so you could even do culottes. I'm thinking a faux leather culotte would be super fun.

PS: Even though I didn't "do" the challenge because I change my silhouette up already, I did have some good insights that I plan to post in a day or two. So thanks for that

A+ for super style and extra effort! My favorite of the bunch is 3 then 1 but 4 is a nice switch up for you. This is a great challenge...I had wanted to participate but alas my life is nuts right now so just the same ole same ole from me. It does take lots of time to change it up,..maybe that's why I get bored, just not time in the day to make room for creative outfits lately. I love having the luxury to figure it all out ahead and that's probably the key. You have great enviable style, Una, and you are an inspiration today. Thanks!

Una, this is fantastic. And I have to say, this exercise was revelatory for me as well (will post shortly). My favorite outfits here are #1 (of course -- and wonderful to see citron with those pants, I never would have thought of that!). I actually like the sweater as is with the plaid pants. Also, #4, which is just so awesome in its layers and textures, sort of girl-street-urchin chic, just LOVE. And also #3, which to me feels the most you. Love them all. Thanks so much for this idea!

Denise, I'm so glad you got something out of this - I feel like you are far ahead of me in knowing what you love and wearing it incredibly well. I get into that throw on and go rut all winter! It feels good to try something new, and to look into my closet instead of stores for solutions to my doldrums. This time I'm anticipating them instead of lamenting afterward...

What an amazing group of outfits!

This is a perfect way to utilize your whole closet and explore different versions of "you." I'm stunned by #4 -- It has those few modern and RATE elements that make it yours, but it has a classic ladylike polish that I love on you for a change.

the LL Bean pants are such a terrific item for you to play with during your long winters. I remember lots of pants like this, mostly Pendleton, or sewn by my Mom, when I was a child.

Thanks for this effort. I truly respect how much went into this, all of your outfits show an extra bit of something. Look #4 is incredibly fresh and speaks to the power of changing up a silhouette dramatically. I.e., going from skinny bottoms to a flared skirt.

I haven't been much on the forum this week, my recovering dog and work are taking up most of my brain space, but want to say how much I got from your silhouette epiphany. It's given me food for thought although I haven't taken any action yet. I love fashion but seem to be stuck in a lazy throw on and go type of dressing right now. In the Summer I bemoan the lack of layers but in the winter I miss the simplicity of throwing on a pair of shorts and a tee. And being OK with that, as long as the colors are cheerful, because, well it's hot and I have an excuse to be lazy. I feel quite stuck in my comfort zone and the only way I get variety is to go very deep into categories. The whole breadth vs. depth question.

Thanks for all the insight!

Sterling, these Kuts don't bother me - I have really skinny legs so maybe that's why they are not bugging me after a day of wear. In fact, I wear them on plane trips for that reason. Maybe we bought different styles? These are really stretchy although a good weight. Eddie Bauer had something similar.

Interesting that the skirt and dress stand out as dressier - they ARE, but it makes me realize even more than I never have (and probably never will) wear skirts and dresses casually. I don't think I've ever chosen to wear a skirt or dress when I didn't have to be dressed for work or a party or event.

I actually felt good in all of these once I struggled my way through putting them together. I need shorter tops or sweaters for the plaid wide-legs! Will also experiment with half-tuck.

Yes, I intend to continue! It's making me not only think harder but think in a different way, and use more of what I don't turn to in my closet. I do have enough to do several rounds or variations on the 5 silhouette theme, but I'm traveling next week so it won't be till the following week. I'm actually looking forward to trying again! And would LOVE any of you to join in whatever way you want, for as long as you want (jackiec!).

And Suz, you are out of your noggin if you don't think the plaid Kuts look just as good on you. I BOUGHT mine because of you!

I LOVED every single silhouette. I was certain I would focus one or two as being better than the others on, but they were all so perfect!!! There was something about number three that was so unexpected, it just ranked as ultra cool. So I guess that was my absolute favorite.

I know you wear the Kut from Kloth ponte pants a lot. I bought them because yours were such a work horse. Do you ever find that the knees are tight and you just want to wear something looser? I very much love the pair I bought, but at the end of the work day, I want them off. I finally decided that I needed more give in the knee area. I bought an off brand of ponte pants that are not as tight in the knee and I find I wear this off brand almost nonstop. Ponte wears and washes beautifully.

You did a fabulous job pushing your style boundaries. My favorite though is 5. I think I audibly sighed when I got to it. I found styling some silhouettes really hard work even though I'd worn something similar in the (sometimes distant) past.

I love reading your thought process and feelings about the challenge. I love your plaid pants. And every outfit rings so truly of you. I really think your footwear choices totally up your outfits and bring that AG edge that is so you. Even your skirt/dress outfits don't look girly at all - just very you. Well well done.

WOW. All my usual words, "fantastic, fabulous, gorgeous, wonderful" just don't even begin to touch this. #5 is my favorite - no, wait, #2 is - or #1, I love those pants - oh I just can't pick a favorite! So alright, my least favorite is the riding blazer outfit in #3 - I really like the slacks but truth be told, I'm just not a fan of riding blazers in general.

I really like Sharon's comments and I'm going to piggyback off that and challenge you further. Are you ready? Here goes:

Do you have enough variation of items that work for each silhouette? Using those variations, interpret the same 5 basic silhouettes with different pieces. Doing more than one variation of any silhouette will earn you bonus points.

I do realize this will take time - that's OK - I'll even join you. Yay or nay?

You are gorgeous. Full stop!

Wow, what a fantastic week, and I loved reading your thought process here.

As someone with a girly streak that she rarely gets to indulge, I just adore your dress and skirt looks. You have lovely slender gams and these outfits play them up and make the most of them. Both are stunning on you!

For #1, can you semi tuck the sweater for proportions? I love the colour combination and adore the pants, as you know.

In my dreams I could wear the skinnies and jacket or tunic as well as you do. I absolutely LOVE this silhouette on you and wish my Kuts looked 1/3 as good on me as yours look on you. I wear mine constantly (wore them yesterday, in fact) and find them a winter staple, flattering to me or no.

I hear you on the bag/ jewellery thing. I almost never wear jewellery anyway, and I wasn't allowed to wear any to my surgeries (not even my wedding ring) so that part didn't impact me last week. I did think I should probably shift my bag out or change my coat, but I couldn't really be bothered. Maybe that will come with time as we continue this. Will you continue? I intend to. At least for a while. I have a feeling it will be really good exercise.

And thanks, again!

Love the plaid pants as you know, but will be interested to see them with shorter or semi-tucked tops. Love how you de-officed the dress, but did you enjoy wearing it? Same with the skirt.

This is really interesting, Una. My thoughts:
1.The skirt outfit and the dress look much more polished and less RATE than your usual choices. I loved them both and think you look wonderful in them, but I wondered how that impacted on your comfort level?
2.I love those plaid pants, but preferred them styled with a shorter/tucked top- I enjoyed the longer leg line when you first did your K/R for these
3.The two outfits with skinny pants are more familiar silhouettes and your wear them well.

Do you think you have enough variations of items that work for each silhouette to be able to do another 5? I would be really interested to see how you interpret the same 5 basic silhouettes with different pieces. And whether it starts to feel easier to to that once you begin to think of your wardrobe along those lines.

Those are all great silhouettes on you, from the outside looking in. But how they feel from the inside out is important too. I think I may have had a lightbulb moment here: my small wardrobe doesn't bore me perhaps because I am forced to entertain frequent silhouette changes in the rotation! I hadn't thought of that! Anyway, I'm off to my cabin in oregon where my 'silhouettes' will be snow pants hunched over in the shape of a human body shoveling deck snow and a turkey gravy spattered a-line apron. When I come back I'll jump in the challenge. xo

Great challenge indeed and you look fab as always! The skirt and dress outfits are beautiful and elegant. I think when forced to change one aspect of our style preference, like a silhouette, we default to something "safe and comfortable" in another aspect like color. Maybe that's in part why you chose a quiet palette this week?

What a great challenge. It seems well worth the effort to come up with new ways to wear your pieces.
Do you have much purple? Or like it? I've wondered before if it would mix into your wardrobe.

I am a little sheepish to be late posting my own challenge, but here it is. (We were at our cabin for a night of relaxation.) Also totally impressed with those of you who took it on.

The challenge to myself was to vary my silhouettes more to avoid the monotony of default skinnies and boots. Our weather has been bizarre - warm temps and no snow - but usually I'd be one month into snow with 6 months to go. There's no magic to the number five; it's simply the number of days I work in a week. I also tried not to wear the same shoes two days in a row. I kept a little notebook with me to jot down thoughts during the day as they occurred. This is the most effort I've ever made!

Here are my five outfits:

Day 1: Wide leg pants, sweater. No makeup or hair done in this pic because I was dying to wear the new L.L. Bean pants but not sure how to style them. Not sure this worked, but I really enjoyed the swishy legs and 70s grooviness of the pants. L.L. Bean pants, Pim & Larkin sweater, Seychelles booties.

Day 2: Dress and micro-fishnets. Incredibly, on this morning I was already wanting to reach for skinnies and boots, despite being sick of them. I forced myself into this outfit and was pretty happy with it. Thrifted BR dress, old micro-fishnets, Topshop booties.

Day 3: Skinnies and jacket. These plaid Kuts are a workhorse and a no-brainer for me. I thought I'd wear them with a jacket, and went with this Nic & Zoe knit riding blazer. I wasn't thrilled with it, although I think it looks okay. Not sure the blazer is a good fit, although it's comfortable. Worn with Ugg Cortonas.

Day 4: Skirt, sweater, patterned tights. This outfit got the most compliments at work and it's the least me but a bit of my shadow style. I love the slight high-low hem and RATE fringe on this thifted tweed BR skirt, but it's pretty girly, so I paired it with my old UWP high-low sweater (back chopped shorter thanks to Rae's suggestion!). Topshop booties. Skirts are not a fallback item for me yet, nor am I good with putting tops to skirts. I remembered why I hate tights when both thumbs punched holes as I was pulling them on, but I wore the darn things anyway.

Day 5: Kut ponte skinnies and Joie cashmere tunic sweater with D2Squared or whatever platinum oxfords. This is totally within my comfort zone and a FFBO, and the shoes got a lot of attention.

What I learned: A LOT. First of all, the variety did me good, much like exercise, although it didn't always feel good or easy. I enjoyed the daily changes. However, I was unable to coordinate any kind of jewelry or bag change-ups which seemed like too much effort. I was also surprised at how lazy I am and how quickly I just wanted to do what felt most comfortable, despite enjoying other silhouettes once I got them on my body. Also, I am good with a limited color palette but could stand to add a few more colors into the black/grey/ink blue/citron that Is my baseline.

All feedback welcome! What works, what doesn't, etc... And thanks so much to those who are playing along or just following. It's been an eye-opener!
