I wanted to repeat a link for you that I just posted for CobaltBlue:

http://www.thechicfashionista.com

I know you've probably already read it Suz, but do you think your main characteristic could be "clear" ? That would explain why you can take brighter colors and sharper contrast. I think Angie must be very clear, but perhaps she leans toward the warm while you lean towards the cool.

re: skin darkening. For years I was wore the lightest porcelein shade of foundation that was made! Obviously I am almost always a little tan now that we live in the desert, but I am amazed at the sallowness of my skin now. To call it "golden" would be very kind. Matching it with warm clothing colors is death for me! I guess it's a golden "overtone", not "undertone" like the warm seasons have.

Love that dress on you. Did you do the alterations or have it done? Great find on the jacket. It is beyond perfect in the jeans/boots outfit.

Krish, so great to see you here! Thank you so much for your always intelligent thoughts. I agree with you so much on all of this! I think a shorter jacket would work better with the dress, too. Next time I will try it with some of the shorter ones I have.

I think our skin tone definitely changes with age and probably more than once. I am a bit darker than I used to be, too.

And yes, I was a redhead for a few years in my thirties and around when I turned 40! It was fun and it suited me, but it was too much upkeep for me. The red would fade out very quickly. So I went back to something more like my natural dirty blonde with some highlights. I think in the next few years I will go increasingly lighter blonde as I allow it to grow into grey.

Suz, I am jumping in late here. Both your dress and your jacket are absolutely fab and perfect! I love the way you wear it in #5 with the sleeves turned up. Bravo on the dress transformation. It is simply stunning.

As for the both together, I have to say I am on the team hesitant. They do not look bad together, but knowing your petite figure, I think you would be even more stunning with this dress length and a more fitted, cropped jacket. the distance between the jacket's edge and dress hem would be greater and make appear your legs longer (and BTW your legs look fabulous like this but I know longer leg is a style you like, so this is why I mention it).

The dress on its own is very elegant and balanced because in great part from how fitted and delicate it is on top, with a high waist (pic #1). If you cover that part (pic #2) the jacket has to be fitted and waist defining, which it actually is, however the jacket's waist seem just a bit lower than the dress's (pic #3). In pic #2, your waist appears lower than in pic #1: maybe that is what bothers you?

This jacket is despite its black color is very feminine, with its fun flower like collar and to my point of view shines best when surrounded by ''strict'' or 'masculine' classics like you have done so wonderfully in pics #5-6.

This is my humble and maybe totally out-there analysis...

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts about color. I wonder if our skin color changes with age, I know in my case it has (darkened). I was always extremely pale but after 40 I have become more... yellow, shall I say. I am not yellow per say, but there is more of the yellow (or golden) undertone and therefore clothes and makeup respond to it differently.

Have you ever tried a different hair color, for fun? (Not that the present one isn't exquisite). But something with auburn and brown or very pale angel blond ?

LUV the alterations to the dress! So FAB! The jacket does look a little long for the dress, but it's perfectly styled in #5.

I too think the jacket works over the dress and wondered what it would look like with black boots? I may also have top copy # 5

Suz!! #5 holey moley, it's awesome! A look after my heart (and the black+brown mix is super). I think the jacket looks fine with the dress when unbuttoned and pushed-up sleeves, though I do think a shorter one would look a bit sharper. That dress looks lovely on you with the slim skirt.

Thank you, everyone! Lantana, I think maybe the flash helped show those details; IRL the jacket is very dark, but I agree the fit makes a huge difference. Sarah, please DO copy; you'd look fab in that outfit! Taylor, that is SO sweet of you! And Sveta, the store is in Toronto! I think it is worth a visit. We will have to plan another shopping adventure.

I should maybe post some before and after alteration photos one of these days so people can see the side-by-side of a few items. It really does make a difference.

This is a great jacket, Suz, I can see why you felt you have to buy it. It fits really well and it has interesting details and clean lines in the same time - double winner!
This store sounds like an interesting one - is it in Toronto? if so I may need to visit it too...
Your pairing of this jacket with skinnies, button down and boots is so perfect and feels totally you.
As for the midi dress it looks much better altered to a pencil skirt. This jacket may be a bit too long for it but I think it works anyway because the skirt is slim and the jacket is fitted.
Your new found style rocks, Suz!

Suz congrats on two fab looks. You look stunning and your hair is perfection. Interesting comments about low contrast and black. You've certainly brought it off here. I notice the jacket is not such an ink black that the cut is obscured. You can clearly see the construction lines, so perhaps this is part of the clue to its success?

Rae, BTW, I think that is a great idea to belt with something inside the jacket. It's tricksy because this is a faux wrap with its own belt; doesn't really show here because I purposely doubled the belt round and fastened it so it would show as little as possible (to wear with the jacket, rather than having ties falling down below the jacket.) But I have a slim silver belt that I could try...I think I'll see if it works!

That's a very interesting thought, Lyn. And you might be right. Maybe we can wear these looks if we feel "up" to them, somehow. Someone with stronger colouring/contrast (like DCgirl) can wear them all the time; they just suit, but for paler skinned types perhaps what is needed is a sense of inner permission to wear them? I wonder.

Angie, blushing! You were right about altering the dress. It wouldn't work on me as an A-line but is much better like this.

OMG!!!!!!Blown away of the riding outfit Suz!!!(and predict a KPK from Angie again)+ that DRESS is so so fab!!!! It was100%worth the effort! Love that jacket, I think Rae has right, but for my eyes still works for with the dress, too.

Interresting what you say about your(and your kind mother's) colouring and contrast.

I am totally wonderring myself too, why is this happenning to with me also? I am low contrast, blonde girl, with grey eyes, and lately crave deep colours and high contrast outfits all the time!!! BUT all depends on the scale I use them(prints, or blocks)

I thought it's more about embracing a trend (or just a change from old looks that started boring us) or subconsciously aiming the psychological significance(meanings) of these pairings (strong, authoritive, selfaware creative woman, etc.)...
??

Thank you, everyone! Rae, chuckling at the idea of my having a closet full of minis. I think I've only ever owned one. Sigh...I do have an above the knee pencil skirt, though, and it will probably work with that!

Una, I feel the same about YOUR hair!

Claire, this is really a thrift store with a difference. Actually, the owner would probably sue me for calling it such. She calls it "high end vintage" and really, that is what it is, except not everything is technically vintage. Some is new or nearly new.

I have been wondering whether I carry off these high contrast looks. Theoretically, it shouldn't work. I am very low contrast IRL. When I see Deborah in her black and white I'm always stunned by how well it works; it never seems as good on me. Having said that, this and the houndstooth did seem good to my eye. With the houndstooth I understand; it's a winter white in that check, and winter white is so flattering that it sort of minimizes the black.

But you know what? I wouldn't wear either of these looks without a bit of lipstick and darkening my brows a bit. Otherwise I'd be totally washed out. And if there is pattern involved, the SIZE of the pattern is absolutely crucial. I tried on a black and white jacket in a different houndstooth a while ago and it completely wore me. Horrid.

The person who did my colour analysis was really surprised. She expected me to wear lighter colours much better than I do, and was stunned at the saturation I could take. Not winter's deep deep saturation, but a lot deeper than she was expecting given how pale and low contrast I am. Who knows? These things are mysterious. My mother, who is almost ghost white these days, with white white hair, looks absolutely stunning in a DARK purple. And I mean dark.

I do think you would look great in black and white, too, Claire, with the right pieces. It may work better with crisp vs. soft looks. A theory, for what it is worth.

The altered dress looks so good on you Suz! This was money well spent! It turned out great. The jacket fits you perfectly and I think it's proportionately fine with the dress - I do like Rae's idea of adding a belt though. But that outfit of the jacket with the crisp white shirt, skinnies and cognac boots KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK!!! This looks so incredibly chic on you I can barely type...gotta sit back now and fan myself...

The dress is great! I like the color for you a whole lot! And the "riding outfit" - knocks it out of the park!

I love your new clothes! I think the dress looks fab altered and your new jacket is amazing. It's so hard to resist black, I know! I like it with the jeans and dress, but I'm not expert on length, but the proportions look good to me.

Ooh and ahhh for both the altered dress and the sharp jacket. Lovely! I think the do look fine together but definitely prefer the jacket with pants.

Oh Suz what a find! Ok, back to the beginning. I am crazy about the altered dress on you. It looks just lovely, and I'm sure Mum appreciated the ladylike styling. I think the jacket length is right on since the dress is a midi. That keeps the proportions looking pleasing to my eye. For the dress, do you have a leather jacket? Just asking! ;)

I am so jealous of how good you look in these simple, clean and bold looks. The jacket buttoned up is fab and it is blowing me away over the white shirt! To. Die. For. I look so plain in black and white but you seem to have more strength in your coloring or features, idk, something. You don't *need* anything extra (scarf, jewelry) to pull it off like I do. The new jeans are fab tucked in (no more "Always Baggies", lol!)

This black jacket was a really good buy for you Suz--I am not judging! You are right that it will fit the bill as a riding jacket AND a tuxedo style jacket! How you managed to do that in a thrift store I will never know. Brava! You look FAB!

Love that jacket! With the jeans it looks just like those riding jackets that are so popular right now - and you got a deal on yours. Woot!

It does seem a little long to pair with a midi, just because both items are long. I think it might look cute with a mini, but you don't strike me as having a closet full of minis! Maybe if you add a slim, shiny belt up high on the waist of the dress?
