Oh Diana, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes shorter skirts/dresses in cold weather!! This dress challenge has reminded me of that same preference for myself, and I had just been thinking I was in the minority on that thought. I really like your summer styling of this dress, it looks super. Printed tights in a lighter weight might be the way to go if you were to try a more wintery styling of this dress again; they'd add some whimsy and lightness. I'm not sure on your feelings for tall boots+visible leg (I seem to recall you liking to see leg between the hem and boot) but very tall boots could also be fun with this dress. Or possibly a very long jacket (and a belt underneath). But either way, it looks super in warmer weather

I like it so much better as a summer dress! Sometimes I think all this winterizing gets a little out of control! I think that cotton fullness is so wonderful in warm weather because it looks crisp and fresh, but it conflicts with warm fuzzy winter textures, IMHO.
Good on you for trying, though.

Thanks all for the styling suggestions! I think you guys are right and even my "better" version is still a little too voluminous. Plus something funny is going on with my dress/slip/leggings so it's not swishing but sticking, which feels annoying. I need more drape for this much volume to work, I think.

Lyn, I like the idea of a fitted pullover with this dress... I much prefer that to a cardigan actually since I don't like buttoned up cardis on me.

Sara and Joy, I think you're right and a belt + open, more shrunken jacket is the way to go here.

Angie and JuneBug: I agree tights would be better with this, but as I mentioned yesterday I don't have any fleece ones and it's too cold for normal tights.

ETA: My difficulties with this dress are reinforcing my preference for shorter skirts/dresses in winter.

I too believe that this dress might be better off in the summer with a light weight jacket, belted and preferrably to my eye, pumps or a more open styled footwear that doesn't draw so much attention, simply because the dress being voluminous draws attention and then boots or heavier looking footwear seem to fight it. Also proportion wise, showing a little more of leg, covered and all, might balance out the volumy feeling.

Infact I'm thinking if you try the same sort of close toed footwear like dark pumps with image #1 and dark tights, it might work well too!

I wonder how the outfit in #1 would look with your jacket undone as the white one is. Cropped jackets are the way to go.

Have you ever tried a sweater, so that the shirt dress lapels just kinda stick out and it's a skirt at the bottom?

I agree that #1 is better than #2. Could you add a belt under a cropped jacket or open cardi? It would cover up the waistline that you don't care for and still allow for the open topper.

Hmm, I actually am wearing a full slip under the dress today, but anything more than a slip or cami gets into lumpy territory. I think the dress is also just better with bare legs, so I think it might just be a warm weather only dress. Oh, well, I have learned something today!

Ooooh, love the former WIW!!

I like #1 but it really doesn't compare to the dress in warmer weather!

Could you wear something similar to the summer WIW, but put a layer or two underneath the dress for warmth?

Diana, that is really fabulous, it is a great dress and perfect with the white jacket. With the buttoned blazer you lose a little bit of the shirt dress effect which is one of my favourite parts.

I think the colour is beautiful on you and it is a fun shape. Would love to see it without a topper too. And as you mentioned with a wide belt. So tough in the cold weather, I run in to this problem all the time during our never ending winters.

The dress is a really pretty colour for you. I think I'd probably like it best as a warmer weather piece with the belt. I know what you mean about hard-to-style dresses. Urgh.

Dianthus, the problem with this dress is that it requires either a belt or a jacket that buttons snugly at the waist. (The waistband of the dress is slightly too big and has some ugly gathering that I don't like, so I need to cover it/cinch it up.) All of my really cropped blazers don't close, and I never button my cardis. (Also, I think I got rid of all my simple short cardigans since I wasn't wearing them. All I have left are long styles like the black one in #2 and complicated handknit ones.)

I like this dress but it's kind of a pain to style. In warmer weather I just wear it with a belt.

I think the dress is very pretty and the color is lovely on you. I would like to see it with a cropped sleeker jacket or a fitted cardi though. I think the volume in the jacket in #1 may be fighting with the volume of the skirt a bit and a slimmer simpler topper may work better.

Today I wanted to wear my "leprechaun dress" for the dress challenge. Because it's a lightweight cotton, I needed to layer with it for the cold day today. My first try with a belted long jersey cardi (#2) was a dismal failure - I felt wide, frumpy, and lumpy. Second try (#1), which was what I ended up wearing, was a lot better with a shorter, fitted jacket.

This dress is a lot more green IRL than in the photos - it's like a true, super saturated emerald green. My camera hates it.

Anthro dress, Ines Raspoort blazer, Gap leggings, Frye boots.
