I love your attention to detail, E, with your brooches, rings, pins, etc. Those are small details, but they are kind of like the cherry on the top of a sundae--a vital part of the outfit!

Your poor mom! We keep calling you an urchin. I'm sure she made you bathe and eat with silverware!

I don't get my machine out near enough, either. Working, homeschooling my own urchins, and living in a 1,000sq foot space that leaves me comandeering the kitchen table for my projects!

E, hmm I think I meant maybe exaggerating the urchin elements (your interpretation) more and seeing where that takes you. Long sleeves and oversizing are examples, I think someone suggested asymmetry too

Claire, almost all of my clothes are from Goodwill, so no worries! I have a clothing budget of $25ish a month (this doesn't include shoes), so thrifting is a way of life for me. I try to get everything I can secondhand, even non-clothing stuff! I prefer skirts that hit right around my knee too. And full skirts are excellent for being at home: you still get full range of motion & can sit down, curl up, etc. without any problems! I do like your 'complex' adjective for muted colouring, definitely more flattering than muddy or murky! I oddly don't mind mousy, but that's because I think mice have quite pretty fur colours, lol.

I just love your style E. These silhouettes with the full skirts are really good on you, and you've managed to create great proportions by cinching with the belt. You make be want to run out to Goodwill and try to create an at-home capsule in this silhouette (not insinuating your clothes are from Goodwill or anything, I just don't know where else to find a skirt like that). I really like the full skirts when they are this length--for me anyway, a skater-length full skirt would not be appropriate.

These muted reds, greys and browns are stellar on you. I share your "complex" muted (as opposed to "clear") coloring--isn't that a better word than mousy, murky or muddy, lol? I love the boots too, BTW. Thanks for the pictures and the write up, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed!

Thnx everyone for all of the nice comments and boot appreciation! I really appreciate all of the adjectives and imagery being thrown out too, it all helps me in pinpointing my style.

Beth Ann, it is thrifted! Almost all of my 'indoor clothes' (aka not outerwear) and belts are thrifted, so it's pretty safe to assume my outfits are secondhand. hehe I really liked the bias plaid because it seemed a more interesting/less uniform-y take on plaid. I do do basic hand sewn alterations: I often shorten the straps on sleeveless shirts, take in the waistbands on trousers, or hem skirts. I also do basic mending, especially on wool cardigans darning little holes. I've taken in the waistbands on some of my skirts, but this one would need so much taking in that I fear it would be quite complex, involving removing the waistband and reapplying it over the gathered fabric. And the skirt's lined with a zipper closure, so I just take the easy belt route! I need to get over my fear of the sewing machine, hehe, because that would make altering jobs like tapering trousers much less time consuming!

AG, I love too long sleeves too, in jackets as well as tops!

Peacechick, I'm blessed with an incredible mother. That's an interesting observation on the urchin/folksy dynamic. De you mind elaborating on your last sentence: what do you mean by pushing it further? If you give me something a little more concrete/detailed I can see if I have something suitable in my wardrobe!

There is nothing better than long walks in swishy skirts! I don't think the outfit is unbalanced because there are dark bits in the skirt and the laces of the boots that tie in with the dark outerwear. I like the belt askew. It adds whimsy and I might even play with tilting it. YLF!

I love the boots, they are very foresty as you say. What a great mom you have to surprise you with them! I do feel the sweater is a bit big, but it does suit your urchiny persona, and to analyse it further, I think the urchin part of you contributes the urban and slightly edgy elements to what would otherwise be purely folksy/fairy tale. I would enjoy seeing if you could push this fashion alchemy even further haha!

Is the skirt thrifted, E? I remember these bias cut plaid from my childhood. Many were also knife pleated, but I like yours better.

The boots? Oh -- those are worthy of a sonnet.

Have you ever considered learning to do basic alterations? It sounds like your handy with knitting needles, and with your love of vintage and petite figure, learning to take things in and upscale might be productive and even a little fun. As a size 14, I find thrifting disappointing. Too much frump and non of the vintage fits!

Thnx everyone!

Janet, I don't mind being called cute. And my walks in the woods follow trails, so it's not as if I'm hiking through untouched wilderness, blazing my way through the undergrowth. hehe

Astrid, the bare legs are definitely for indoors only! I like to cuddle up under blankets too, so sometimes I overheat if I'm wearing tights indoors.

MG, eek! I'm glad there wasn't much wind down here: for the first 5-10 minutes of my walks I always freeze and inwardly curse myself for thinking it was a good idea, but then my body gets used to the temps and pretty soon I feel comfy. That's a good idea re: hat bookending...clearly I need to knit another hat in that family of colours! After I'm done with my Christmas knitting I'll get to it. :)

Another great outfit! I don't think the sweater looks too big, just gently oversized, nor does your outerwear appear "unbalanced," just cozy! You might try a hat in the color of those boots though, and see if you like the bookending effect.

I went for a walk yesterday too (same temps, I am in OK) and froze half to death, thanks to the high winds. Silly me, I should know better after living here for 8 years.

To be honest, this outfit was all about the boots, although I didn't wear them indoors! They were a surprise Christmas present from my mom two years ago after I admired them in the LL Bean catalogue, and I adore them. They're so foresty! And the laces make me feel like I can kick ass if necessary! But still practical, being completely waterproof and made of rugged waxed canvas & rubber. I stomp about in them quite happily. But with their colours and rugged style, they do require me to wear a certain kind of clothes to match. It was still cold (it was 43F/6C when I went on my walk), so I just piled on the wool! This skirt has a lot of my favourite colours, all magically combined in one print, so I couldn't resist it despite being it too big in the waist. And it has pockets! I picked a more rugged belt to hold it up, because of the boots (although it ended up being so cold that the belt and boots were never seen at the same time! hehe) and an urchiny grey wool sweater (it actually has a neat little knitted detail at the center neckline but I forgot to photograph it) that I see from the pics is a bit big. My fox brooch had to come out to play, as I was feeling forest inspired! It was so shiny that I put my belt buckle off center to try to balance things out, but in the photos the belt just looks askew rather than intentional. I also put on a ring and bracelet, but the extra long sleeves on the sweater cover them up. These socks are my oldest clothing item (the only things older are my jewelry): I got them on a family trip to Scotland when I was 12! They're a thick wool, mainly ribbed, with decorative cuffs, and they're still going strong 15 years later (although I only rediscovered them 5 or 6 years ago in a box when my parents were moving, so they did have a good break!). The boots require a thick sock, and these were also good for padding around the house.

For my walk, I added my charcoal wool coat and picked up the navy in the skirt with my navy wool hat & scarf. Looking at the pics, I think all of that darkness together with the more medium tones on bottom was a bit unbalanced! Good to remember for next time. I also put on navy tights under the socks so my thighs wouldn't be exposed to any drafts (lol) but was too lazy to recreate that for the pics. And then of course I laced up my boots and was ready to go! I ended up going on an even longer walk than usual, it was just so lovely in the woods I was at, and this combination kept me toasty despite almost 2 hours outside.

I felt really happy in this, both the indoor and outdoor versions. I absolutely love the way that full skirts sway around me as I walk, and that I can still take my usual strides (pencil skirts make me claustrophobic). It's funny, I didn't realise how much dark red had become a part of my fall/winter wardrobe, but including the burgundy in the skirt's print, I think I've worn dark reds four days in a row (although the cami yesterday is a little more purple than red)! Just goes to show how colours can sneak in without me realising it. hehe

As always, all comments & suggestions welcome! Especially re: the belt buckle off to the side, the fit on the sweater, and whether all the darkness of my outerwear was a bit off balance. :)

ETA: a pic of the woods I was walking in
