Wow, both items look great post dye job. I've considered dying clothing but I've always chickened out. I bought some black dye months ago to over-dye a few black items that have faded and I still haven't done it. Maybe this will inspire me...

chouette - sorry to hear that the other colors in the shoes didn't work out. Yeah, the coat is a little broad shouldered, I'm usually a true medium but one size down isn't tight at all on me, so sizing down might be the solution. I was curious about even going two sizes down but I think that would be too tight at the neck and there is nowhere I could try it on in my vicinity in a B&M store.

Jeanie - what I've read about dying is that if the fibers are really damaged (bleach spots or something) the dye won't take quite the same in those areas, but regular stains might be able to be masked, I agree. The only problem I read about with RIT (besides people's experiences with some particular color packets turning out different than they expected) is that for the color to take and fix correctly hot water is important -- so maybe not great for knits that need a cold wash. That's why I went with a cold water dye. Also natural fibers and rayon dye well but you sometimes have to get a different type of dye if you are dying something with a very heavy synthetic percentage.

thanks alaskagirl! It is a bit of a pain, but kind of fun as a craft project

Thanks Elly - yes the pants before would have worked okay, although especially in the bright sun the light teal color was bugging me. After dying they are darker but maybe not as much as in my photo. Outdoors in the sun they are closer to a mid-tone cool blue with the pattern still sharp.

Oh wow-- I love both outfits. The skinnies were cool before but I see that it brought the sophistication level up closer to what you preffer. I love to spotted coat on you. Nice combo of silhouettes, too.

Wow Rabbit, how cool! I love the way everything turned out! I have been pondering dyeing a hat and a sweater that are cream but have stains. I am hoping that dyeing a dark color will mask the stains. I will check out the dye you mentioned. I have some Rit in the closet but it sounds like you had some issues with it. Great point about adding texture to pair ink blues. I think I remember that rule in contemporary decorating with neutrals as well. So if you are decorating a bedroom with all cream you want to add texture by adding things like quilts and rough ceramic, etc.

Well you know already that I love those shoes and they look fantastic on you. I ended up not getting them from the UK site for the much higher price, and the black and bordeaux just didn't compare to the blue ones you have. I am still searching for the perfect blue shoes! And - I have the same coat at home (just got it yesterday) and believe that I need to size down as well. I ordered the S but it's just a tad big on me (shoulders are sticking out a bit, not good). Your plaid skinnies couldn't be more perfect - wow! You look super FAB!

Suz, yes, I can easily picture this coat on you. I got it during a 40% off sale. I wonder if the Loft near you has one in or could transfer one for you to try? The Loft in Seattle had several, but my local Loft in Portland only had one on a mannequin, but they let me try on that one.

Thanks lisap, yes dying can be a bit of all that. There are places you can send your clothes to have them dyed also, that aren't that expensive, but the ones I was looking at to send some items to use hot water, and I was worried about shrinkage.

Ambergreen - I got the dye at an art supply shop, and they also sold the soda ash that was recommended (I can give you some if you ever want it, I only used a little). The dye was under 4$ so about the same price as the RIT liquid dyes. From what I've read dying in the washer is fine as long as you clean it with bleach and hot water afterwards: https://www.ritstudio.com/tech.....op-loader/ I've done black and pastel colors in top loaders before and it's been fine, they were steel inside however.

Thanks shedev

Cocolion, good to know the coat is working :).

Ah, the results of the dye project--worked out great! And now you have these custom-colored pieces that of course go perfectly together. Procion huh...I'll check it out for dyeing my awful salmon-paté-colored top...

I agree, the smaller coat is an even better proportion--good thought on that. It looks quite Mod (one of my favorite styles, anyway). Go Team Plaid, and of course, those shoes are awesome. And great furry bag. You do really well at the ol' GW!

Dyeing in the washer, though...is there no risk to the next load or two (or the inside of the washer itself)?

WOW, rabbit, these are amazing outfits. First of all the coat is spectacular on you. Just love it! The moody tones are fantastic on you and it will be incredibly versatile.

And the dye job is fantastic! There's a real richness to the overdye and you look fantastic in ink. I also love the addition of the furry bag. So creative and fun.

I would love to try that coat myself. It might be too dark on me, but I can see it becoming a workhorse. For anyone who wears a lot of denim and solids underneath (which I tend to do) this could be a real outfit maker. I wish I could try on in person but I suspect that will be difficult. The Loft in Toronto doesn't really carry a whole lot, alas.

Thanks Missey, Debbie, Elizabeth, deb, Neel, shevia, kiwigal, thimbleina, Uggbootdiva, Deborah, dianthus and texstyle !

bj1111 - yeah, even with a small on the coat rather than a medium I can still fit lightweight sweaters underneath, and it's a little better fit (actually it looks a little more fitted in the waist in the mirror than in the photos).

caro - yes, I've only dyed clothes that were inexpensive, or otherwise on their way out due to fading.

Gigi - it is exhausting with all the rinsing and stirring, assuming you don't do it in a washer which saves all the labor (I have a front-loading washer so it doesn't work as well, although I've used a top loading washer in the past just fine).

Dashielle - heh I do my hair too, and re-dying denim can be one of the more foolproof things to do I think. I think you can even use household blueing for it.

tulle - thanks, and good advice on the heathering. I've used Mrs. Stewart's bluing for yellowing items, have you ever used that? With RIT dye do you use hot water? That's where I got into trouble in the past, I ended up shrinking some favorite printed tees I was trying to dye back to a rich black background. Which blue do you use? I'd read Amazon reviews that RIT navy turned out purple for some folks, so I tried this dye I got at an art supply shop instead. Yes, I like my sporran/furry pet bag. ;)

Firecracker - heh, I kind of fell for this bag at Goodwill, it had a not so attractive decorative strap across the front, but it was in like new condition so I cut that off. I've found dying not as time consuming in a top loading washer, but by hand going for deep colors, it can be. With things like the pants you can test first by dipping in a white paper towel and rinsing and drying it. I ended up dying the pants for about five minutes, rinsing them out and letting them dry, and when that didn't make much difference in color, dyed them again in the same solution for 15 more minutes.

Beth Ann - ha, I did it in a big steel canning pot (not used for food) in a stainless steel sink, so most of the mess was contained, but it did occasionally splash so I wore old black clothes.

goldenpig - thanks, it was great to meet you and share the tables with your kids (being awfully cute with deb and bj) also. :)

I do not like the top in mauve but in navy it is magic! And what clever thing to do with the plaid pants. I would never have thought of that. Wow, inspirational, and I the shoes rock.

Must agree with Firecracker: the coat comes alive on you in a way it doesn't on the model. Also, forgot to say before how wickedly clever the pairing of that sporran-like crossbody is with those tartan pants!

Never tried dyeing! I'm afraid I would end up dyeing my carpet, or skin, or floor....you get the idea!

Love this look --- so rich but harmonious. The dyed plaid is gorgeous, and the shoes are practical and full of texture and interest. And absolutely yes to the coat! I saw this in the store and loved it.

I'm super impressed with your dyeing! The outfit is terrific. The little faux-fur bag is such a great addition. I've never dyed anything. It sounds very time-consuming and risky to me. I like tulle's wisdom about textures and tones. Makes it seem like something I could actually do, if I had a reason to try it one of these days.

I love the coat on you, too. The fit looks just right! It suits you better than it does the model, imo.

What a fantastic dye job! The new color is definitely more flattering on you. And isn't ink blue + black = instant sophistication. Thanks to Angie for introducing us to it!

Your new coat is gorgeous too! Fantastic outfit

Swooning over these looks, Rabbit--I would happily steal every one of them! You look stunning in your new inky wardrobe (that overdyed plaid! that coat! those shoes!) and I'm so glad you've demonstrated what a bit of dye can do. I have used blue dye to revive some heathered gray sweaters that had begun to yellow (very unflattering to my complexion) with great success, and I'm about to use the same color (regular old Rit liquid dye for me) on a dalmation-spotted ivory sweater (again, too yellow, and too high-contrast for me.) As I'm sure you noticed, it's hard to go wrong with the resulting colors if the tone of the dye is right; a little lighter or deeper doesn't seem to matter when you're building a monochromatic look--which you've done to perfection here. For those interested in trying this, though, I should note that in my experience heathered fabrics (wools, linens, denims) are more forgiving of any unevenness in the dyeing.

Dashielle - I have fairly low volume feet and am usually true to size. When I tried these on in my usual size (8) they felt like they might be a little narrow in the toe box, but a half-size up had too much room around the ankle to lace tightly enough to fit snug (although an insole might have helped. They are slightly padded inside already also.)

So I got my usual size and wore them a little bit each day, the stiffness eased a little on the first wearing (they are leather inside and out, although the patent patches probably won't stretch much) and they have been comfortable all-day walking shoes since then.
