I have a pinofore style apron that my mother-in-law made me many years ago. It has snowmen on it but I use it year round since it's the only apron I own. I rarely use it though. I usually cook in lounge clothes but I still hardly ever get anything on them. Maybe it's my equivalent of Angie's white jean superpower.

I have ruined several things in the kitchen too, Runcarla, and I am also prone to burning, cutting and otherwise hurting myself in the kitchen. I've been more careful lately and have injured myself less.

My most spectacular kitchen accident was when I was getting ready to bake a coconut cake using my grandmother's stand mixer. I first plugged it in (BIG mistake) and then assembled the double beaters into the workings. As it attached, it came on and grabbed up my finger. I immediately unplugged it with my other hand, expecting it to loosen and let go of my finger, but it didn't. DH had gone to the store for a missing ingredient. My kids were there, but they were tiny and paralyzed with fear at my terrified screaming. I got them to open the door, and I picked up the mixer and ran through the snow to a neighbor's house where I bumped the mixer against the door instead of knocking because I couldn't hold the heavy thing with one hand. My neighbor was amazing. She sat me down at her kitchen table and yanked the bars of the mixer apart with her bare hands. I think she had that adreneline-fueled extra strength you read about. I have a little scar but nothing worse. Oh, and after I got checked out at the ER I went home and finished the cake. ;)

I have a cherry red Williams-Sonoma apron that I wear for real cooking and a ruffly dark floral one I put on occasionally for serving Thanksgiving dinner. I use lots of different hot pads, but my favorites are this kind:
https://www.allmodern.com/home.....html?refid

Gradfashionista, your creations all look scrumptious and JAileen that Marimekko apron is so cheerful and fun!

I love to cook and I’m a klutz, so prone to splatters and burns. A few years ago my husband and MIL got me a chefs coat like this one and I love it. It really covers me up (I’ll often just wear a tee or tank under it) and has three quarter sleeves which I prefer to long sleeves for cooking.

Long heat proof mitts are a must. These are my latest and working well.

I've been wearing the aprons that are slip over pinafore style because the strap around the neck, even though the pressure is very slight, was starting to really bother me.

Just got my new All Clad potholders wth silicone grips from Amazon and am really loving them.

My mum and I went shopping recently to Toast and looked at beautiful Japanese style linen and denim aprons. We really liked the look, and my mum bought the denim version. She now wears it in here kitchen and it is very cute.

DH and DS are both good cooks, DH especially so and DS very much on the way to becoming a good cook, he is just 15, so it bodes well! It was a happy by product of having my head in my studies for the last 3 years. So I have less call for an apron now.

I really like the look of the plastic style full mitten style glove. I hate those burns when you catch your wrist on the inside of the oven, and they seem a good way of avoiding them. But I always feel unsure about them because they look big, and our kitchen is small.

I don’t wear an apron, but I try to avoid wearing white, and generally sport lounge clothes when cooking. I spent a lot of time cooking and cleaning for a special dinner tonight, and was able to try a couple of new dishes.

#1 Brisket with apricots and prunes for SO and his family.
#2 Honey garlic haricots verts
#3 Fesenjan—unfortunately, I lost track of time when reheating it and it became overcooked. It’s a Persian dish consisting of chicken stewed in onions, walnuts, and pomegrange juice.
#4 Dairy-free poached pear galette. I’m delighted that the pastry turned out flaky, in spite of the coconut oil.

I have an apron that I wear when I cook for a large crowd since I tend to get really messy then. I have a pair of oven mitts that I have had for over 20 years that I love (the heat doesn't come through) but I don't know how much longer they will last. I also have my "Ove Gloves" and love them as well.

Next time I am in Maine I will have to stop in at Stonewall Kitchens and load up on some kitchen necessities.

I agree with Diana. I only use an apron when I have guests, otherwise I wear lounge clothes. I am ridiculously sensitive to cooking smells in my clothing, especially sauteeing garlic or onions. Anything worn while cooking needs to be laundered immediately, and many of the clothes I wear daily I don't like to launder as often, especially jackets and sweaters.

As for taking hot things out of the oven, I wear mitts, but none of them come high enough to prevent the occasional nick by a hot rack. I like the ones with silicone protection because if my hands are damp, cloth doesn't work at all.

I wear aprons like yours. My SIL and I give each other homemade aprons at Christmas. I have a big stash of Marimekko so I use that. She uses Hawaiian fabric. Here’s one I made a couple years ago.

I don't wear aprons, but I also never wear my street clothes when I cook. Always loungewear which is easy to launder. The reason is that even if I wear an apron, my clothes end up smelling like cooking/food, which I can't deal with.

Hey! Those burns are the Bakers Badge. It’s like being a stone mason, who would get slivers of stone in their hand. In a job interview in the Dark Ages, you don’t say anything. You hold your arm out to prove your experience!

I use pot holders of all types, towels, and the long mitts.

Now for the aprons: Despite my love of aprons and large collection, I like having only one for cooking. I keep my school apron with my name on it as a memento, but I don’t like it. It’s just thin plain pocketless white. The one I use is a medium blue, heavy, with a big pocket and a ring adjustment thingy at the neckstrap. I don’t love it entirely. I used to have this apron with a button on towel, which was the best feature ever. However, it had no pocket and had a two-colour toile pattern. Those things irritated me enough to ban it, lol. I just have to have solid colour. And a pocket!

One day I will find the perfect apron! ... or sew a button on the blue one for a towel...

Early days I ruined many a garment while cooking. Splashed oil that would leave permanent residue marks was the most common culprit, but sometimes a fruit juice or tomatoe sauce would be responsible. Eventually I adopted aprons - especially since I often don't change out of work clothes before hitting the kitchen.

In the pic below I am wearing my favourite apron. It was provided when DH and I took a weekend cooking course. The fabric is thick cotton. I have another apron (see pic 3) but the fabric is thin and I don't wear it as much. The mitts pictured (pic 4) are used to handle hot items, but I have a bad habit of grabbing a kitchen towel to use when pulling hot things out of the oven. DH wants me to get some mitts that go higher up my arm because I sometimes nick a hot rack and burn my arm.

I think I need to expand my kitchen capsule - maybe a new apron or two and some better pot holders. What do you wear in the kitchen? Do you have special clothes or do you wear an apron? What do you use to handle hot items?

Last pic is my weekly mix-up for oatmeal bars. This week's version has dried cranberries and chocolate chips.

Please post your kitchen capsule and food pics (what you are cooking and/ or what you are eating!) Recommendations for pot holders looked for!
