Yes, this is truly inspiring. My hair is almost long enough for a pony tail so I've been wondering whether it is worth it to buy some hair gadgets to play with. What a great selection of styles you have!

Hi Ginger, Thanks for the beautiful hair inspiration. I received a ficcare clip as a gift many, many years ago as a teen and never really knew what to do with it. It was just such a high quality hair clip I kept it all these years. Well I'm glad I did because I just read your post, watched the YouTube tutorial and tried it out. That clip is 100 times more comfortable and solid than the standard bobby pins. My scalp thanks you for this tip!

Gorgeous!! The fork in 7/8 is stunning with your hair. You’ve been practicing a lot. And, waving at my Ficcare twin- I bought the same one, when it was on sale at Nordie’s. Completely agree, about the versatility. The longest parts of my hair are “only” shoulder blade length, and it works beautifully for me.

Wow! These buns are gorgeous! Don't they give you a headache? When I had long hair past my waist in high school, I could never wear it in a high ponytail or put it up because it too heavy and pulled too much. Clips and covered rubber bands were never big enough. But maybe that's only an issue when one has thicker than a wrist super coarse hair? My hair is so bad that when the ends hit my skin it feels like someone is beating me with a hairbrush.

Thank you, Windchime!

Zaeobi, honestly they aren't hard at all! This video is a good demonstration of the basic "nautilus" bun. She has some tips in the comments for shorter hair, too - basically, do the wrap around 2 or 3 fingers instead of your whole hand.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5gTy1gCyqE

Angie, I was using a giant bun form a lot last year! But that's not quite the same as a hairpiece. I have a long braid that I will add to my own braids to get a bigger "coronet braid" look, but beyond that I haven't tried hairpieces aside from my historical ones. I would love any suggestions!

nemosmom, I've used pens and pencils in the past as well. True hair sticks are really great. They're very smooth with good points, so they slide into a hairstyle without catching or tearing any hair strands. The point helps them anchor well against the scalp, too. I got the acrylic ones from an Etsy shop called Outnumbered Novelties. The owner mostly takes custom orders for hair sticks because he has so many varieties of acrylic available; his Facebook showed the colors and I picked from those for my order. The wooden one has yellow flowers in resin on the end. That one came from Ukraine so it was a wait, but worth it; it's very pretty, and the tapered shape means it's extra secure. There are quite a few stores on Etsy specializing in flowers-in-resin style of hair toys and jewelry.

Thank you, Karie!

Thanks, Shevia! I'm having a lot of fun with new hairstyles.

Joy, I tried once, but all I had on hand were takeout chopsticks. The wood caught in my hair, and the points were blunt so it was difficult to insert them.

Thank you, Bijou, you are very kind!

I did want to do a special shout-out for the Ficcare clip. This is called a Ficcare Maximas: Basically a metal jaw clip with small teeth and a strong spring. Nordstrom carries quite a few. They can also be bought directly from the company, which is based in California. (I, uh, ordered two more over the weekend.)

Finds isn't working for Nordstrom, but this is the one I have: Maximas Silky, size medium, in the "Blue Jeans" color:

https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/f.....ip/4069279

The magic thing about Ficcares is that they work on ANY length of hair. They are not made for long hair! My mother has hair that is barely shoulder-length, and also medium thickness; but she tried out mine in a "peacock" type twist. And she went home and ordered her own!

https://www.ficcare.com/maximas

With a bun like mine, the Maximas doesn't close. And that doesn't even matter, because it still holds like a rock. I could probably use a large, but don't need it. They are not cheap but fully worth the price. I got my blue one from a swap board, but the others I ordered directly from Ficcare to get the colors I wanted.

UmmLila, these styles take at most 20-30 seconds, including the time to brush my hair into a high ponytail for the starting position. That said, sometimes I don't like how it turned out, or I'm using a hair toy and bun style that don't work well with each other, so I may take it down and do it again! I'm still just figuring out "FFBO" bun and hair toy combinations.

Thank you, HJ! It took a while a get here. I've been looking forward to doing these twisty updos for several years. :)

Haha TG, not a whiz! Just practicing! I've watched SO many youtube videos! I definitely did not invent any of these myself. ;)

Jenava, I used to do that style when I was a teenager! I haven't tried it recently, because it requires a hair tie (none of these buns do), and I'm honestly not sure the pocket would hold all of my hair anymore. I like high buns more now, too. But it's a great look! And double French braids was something I've done for really active things. They hold hair so easily, even when it's lots of different lengths.

Thank you, madeline! I honestly didn't invent these (though some I am doing my own way). The super-twisted ones with the sticks are mostly the "L-infinity" bun, the others are variations of the "Nautilus" bun technique: Making a loop over your hand, then winding the rest of the hair around the base of the pony tail. The first loop can be large and secured around the base, or the two parts can be separated like a sideways number 8. The one with the French twist/coiled bun is an "inverted cinnabun" held with a Ficcare clip. That one is extremely secure.

Sal, my hair is firmly middle-of-the-road thickness, just at or under 3" ponytail circumference with a very tight hair tie. That may be why I've never dealt with weight issues or broken a clip. I do sometimes have issues with updos that are not balanced, or pull on small portions or locks of hair. That was starting to get more common with basic messy buns, which use a hair tie; the weight pulled on my front hair quite a bit. These stick and fork styles don't create pressure points so they're very comfortable.

Often I will wear it down to work or church... except that hasn't been happening for the last couple months! I almost never wear it completely down when I'm at home, even before I grew it out again. I was a ponytail girl for decades. It's medium thick but also fine, so everything floats - it never stays behind my shoulders and can really be in the way. The last picture I took after taking it out of my sleep braid, so the waves are from that. It's got its own wave texture.

ETA: I forgot you asked how long I will grow it! I will know it when I see it. My hair is hip-length now (between waist and tailbone) but doesn't look it because of its wave; and it's shorter when I loosely curl it. So I want it long enough that it looks appropriately long to me even when curled. I'm guessing that will be another 6-12". I'm pretty sure I don't want it longer than that, even if it gets to that point. Everyone's hair has a "terminal length" past which it really doesn't grow even with good care.

Thank you all so much!

ophelia, indeed, it's interesting when certain hairstyles or techniques suddenly stop working. When my hair was shorter, it meant I needed a trim. I've been growing my hair for I think 2 years now, and I've hit a lot of those points! I was actually excited about this one, since it meant lots of shopping and new things to try. Many of these buns cannot be done on shorter hair. (Or are so small they look kind of silly to me.)

Thanks, Aileen! I like how the different colors in my hair suddenly show up in a lot of these. It's interesting: Dark hair shows off hair toys beautifully, but the detail of the hair itself is often hard to see. My hair hides some of the toys but it's got lots of color variation.

Aww slim cat, don't be jealous! Short hair has a lot of styling options that are very hard or impossible to do with long hair. And it's much less commitment if you want to change up something.

Angie, I am having a lot of fun! My goal is to have a BIG a bun as possible, which can be technically challenging. My hair is only medium thick and can twist into a very small knot. So I can do looser buns, but then they have to be secured right or they start sliding! There's a lot I'm still learning.

Preppy Pear, to be honest I'm pretty fascinated by how some of them look, too! There are a bunch of different styles in these pictures, but sometimes the same style will turn out looking different. I certainly don't have it down to a science yet.

Very true, Carla! All of these styles are done with one or two sticks, or a single fork or Ficcare. I use a bobby pin or two to hold back wispies but that's not structural. They are very easy to do and very sturdy.

Thank you so much, Diana! I've always liked doing something with my hair. These are really fun.

I love the twisted styles - especially with the chopsticks.

I remember when my hair was longer that it used to ache at times and that clips would break....my hair has volume.

Do you wear it down Ginger? And how much longer will you grow it? it looks very healthy and shiny.

Have you tried the one where you make a ponytail, part it above the band, and flip the tail up into the part, tucking it into the pocket made by your hair? When I had long hair I did that a lot as it was pretty and quick.

I admit...I have a bit of a poison eye for long hair nowadays but that's just my own baggage. (-: It certainly can be fun to try lots of styles. Braids are fun, too. I used to do two french braid on either side of my head. I could leave it that way for days and it still looked decent; a great camping hair style!
