I think you hit the nail on the head when you wrote,
"Ultimately it may very well be the clothes that are the problem -- not my figure. For example, I would love to do this with a skimming, casual tee shirt (the half tuck) but I just can't find one that fits quite the right way, for my height, all I'm finding is either "too clingy" or "too loose/big." Devil is in the details!"

Find the right pieces & the "problem" disappears. I am going to remind myself of this everyday.

I have all the same reasons for not tucking as you do - plus my slightly-longer-than-normal torso that makes most tucked things come un-tucked as soon as I raise my arms. But you look so good in this that I'm determined to 'get' it myself. I think the wide belt is really part of the key to pulling it off.

Thanks, Una -- we are our own harshest critics, aren't we?

I played with this for days, various tops, tweaks, etc. (It looks better with sleeves rolled up, but was too cold for that yesterday). Ultimately it may very well be the clothes that are the problem -- not my figure. For example, I would love to do this with a skimming, casual tee shirt (the half tuck) but I just can't find one that fits quite the right way, for my height, all I'm finding is either "too clingy" or "too loose/big." Devil is in the details!

Also psychologically I first had to get over the idea of voluminous top/skinnies. I am tired of that silhouette, and craving a more skimming/slimmer fitting one that doesn't hide my waist completely. I discovered I have a preference for tucking into bootcuts rather than skinnies, but I felt daring last night and wanted to push past my comfort zone on multiple fronts.

I do think a pair of slouchy pants may be in my future...

Shiny, I'm an IT too, as you know. I don't tuck into skinnies either, only with BFs and slouchy pants, to counteract that exaggerated IT effect. I don't see any bulge at all on you! Honestly, you look so petite and slender that I'm thinking "if SHE doesn't tuck, what hope is there for the rest of us?" So good job helping us along!

Una, I dislike tucking for a variety of reasons:

1) Midsection blubber. Even if I deliberately leave the tuck messy/poofed out, and I know it still looks better than a form fitting top that accentuates bulges, psychologically, all I see is blubber/thickness where I don't want it. In these pics, I still see some belly bulge... but it's not horrendous, so I think I can get over it. (Also I know these new jeans are going to stretch out A LOT with wear, so that'll probably disappear.)

2) Ill fitting jeans. I think these AG jeans solve that -- they are flattering (I now have them in skinnies and slim bootcut). They are not too tight in the waist. They look darn good in the back view, which I'm particular about. So I don't mind tucking and showing the jeans off! But untucking can instantly make so-so jeans wearable, because the top covers up the so-so fit in the waist/back view.

3) Inverted Triangle effect. With skinnies, I think it makes the IT shape more pronounced. All I see is broad shoulders, narrow hips, and spindly legs. (I am usually a size larger on my top half than my bottom half.) Keeping the top untucked, as I mentioned, creates a vertical line at my hips, which makes them, to my eye, seem more in line with my upper half. I was hoping the side pockets on the ponte knit pants would add some heft to my hips. I don't mind, and actually like a lot, tucking a poofy shirt into a high-waisted pencil skirt. That is one of my favorite silhouettes to wear. If I could find the perfect pair of voluminous high waisted trousers, I'd totally embrace tucking. The idea there is offsetting the IT, turning it upside down, by adding volume on the bottom. The new slim bootcuts may work to that end, better than the skinnies, but I was in the mood to wear skinnies yesterday with the new booties.

Hope that explains. I am rambly today!

Shiny, this looks great! I definitely prefer the higher rise, more substantial belt. It looks more proportional that way, because it shows off your hips to great advantage. I think the lower rise with skinnier belt minimizes the hips more, which may be why your top half seems to dominate in those latter pics. Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone in such a fab way!

Thanks Angie! Okay, I will try again. I have another outfit idea, different top, different belt, with jeans.

I also prefer the wider belt - especially with the higher-rise jeans. Not so sure with the lower rise pants, as I fear it elongates my top half too much (i.e., the light belt acts as continuation of the light top). But I'll give it a whirl when I get the belt fixed.

Did you notice I'm also wearing a shirt with a collar? Hee hee. That is also out of my comfort zone, as I fear it makes my neck look too short, and I hate the feel of crisp cotton shirts. But, this one, in denim, is very easy and comfortable to wear. It reminds me of my favorite long denim shirt I wore endlessly -- with black stirrup pants -- during early pregnancy and breastfeeding. I got so sick of long denim shirt over black stirrups, I did not want to do that trend again. But then I realized "wait -- I can tuck, that makes it different."

Tucking into your skinnies with the wide belt looks gorgeous, Shiny. You look stunning, both with and without the jacket and scarf. The shirt looks fine with the ponte pants and the thinner belt, but it doesn't quite have the oomph the first outfit does. I think it might be the fit and rise of the pants coupled with the narrowness of the belt that changes things. I do think, though, that you can most definitely tuck. Brava to you for going out of your comfort zone!

Tucking tops into jeans and pants is so waaayyyy out of my comfort zone, Angie may have a heart attack.

Two versions:

1) Pics 1,2, 3 -- BR Denim top tucked into AG Farrah skinnies, with wide snakeskin belt, and 3 inch Me-Too suede wedge booties. With and without white AT pleather jacket.

These skinnies have my ideal rise: 9.5 inches! Yep. Rests on my high hip bone, and just below (not above!) my belly button. So they don't feel like they are falling off. But does that high rise look goofy, with top tucked?

I had not yet washed the skinnies, and I feared I was going to get blue ink all over my shirt and white jacket, so I did a last minute swap out...

2) Pics 4, 5, 6 -- For AT ponte knit trouser pants, which have a lower rise, side pockets and zippers on the thighs. These pants, which are a year or so old, are on probation: I am debating about keeping them or donating. Every time I wear them, they wind up sagging horribly by day's end, slipping too low and threatening to fall right off. I was thinking it was lack of belting, and it turns out I was right, so they are not getting tossed just yet.

Seeing these photos I realized I had hiked the pants up a smidge too high, so I belted them looser, stuck my hands in my pockets, and let the rise ride lower. It was okay. I usually feel very odd in low rises. I feel like they are going to fall right off. But they did not fall off.

I also swapped belts: only because the wider belt, which is new, was too big. I need to have a cobbler add another hole before I can wear it.

Looking at these photos, I'm not sure tucking is working for me. Maybe it's all in my head, but it looked better in my mirror. In the photos, I feel like I am all top with no hips and scrawny spindly legs? Which made me realize I embrace the untuck not only because I want to hide my mid section; I untuck because I like the horizontal line at the hip, as I think it adds weight there, balancing out my body proportions?

Outfit inspired by... sorry, forget who; someone posted a pinterest inspiration with light denim top and dark denim jeans, plus scarf. That was what I was going for, except tucked in, and with skinnies instead of flares.

Worn to: errands, dinner, movies, people-watching.
