I spent most of my life wearing stuff that almost-but-didn't-quite fit, owing to my small stature and very high waist. (Remember that thread about the body proportions? Where you measure your head and see how many heads tall you are? Well, my proportions worked out almost dead-on the 'norm', everywhere except my waist, which was about half as long as it 'should' be!). Anyway, as a result, the waist of any tailored top, dress or coat ends up hovering around my hips. Not a good look. (Same problem you had with your new dress). But since discovering that (usually) alterations can be done to fix that, my life has changed. It's the brand Moon (designer is the brother of the Joe Fresh's designer) and although I find some of the items in that line a little young for me, this dress caught my eye. I also find their sizing to be ridiculous (I normally wear a medium and this dress is an extra-large!). I fell in love with the dress the moment I put it on (I think I might have actually gasped a little) but it didn't fit perfectly. It was too long in the upper body - the seam at the waist was actually on my upper hips and the under arms holes were halfway down my body showing some serious side boobage. But I looked at the construction of the dress and hoped my tailor could work with it. Even better, the dress which was regularly $139, was marked down to $89 and then when it was scanned, was only $27! So I grabbed the dress and literally drove straight to my tailor's before I even cut the tags off. Now this dress is a crochet overlay on top of the actual "under" dress. I was not sure how complicated this would be to alter. But my sweet tailor took one look at it, pinched here and pinned there, charged me $30 and said to pick it up in a week. I picked it up Saturday, put it on and it was perfect! So for a total of $57 I got a custom fit, ink blue, crochet dress! Don't worry about the slightly rumpled looking neckline - there's a ribbon detail there that doesn't photograph well but it is symmetrical IRL. I've paired the dress with my cognac jacket, sheer Hue tights with a subtle vertical pattern (would have much preferred nude micro fishnets but didn’t have a pair) and my new Aerosole blue suede booties, as seen on Angie's booties list a while ago (which are crazy comfortable BTW). I'm not wearing any jewelry since I don't want to risk catching anything on the crocheting. What I love about the dress is although it is from Moon's fall 2011 line, I think it can be worn really any time of year - I'm already picturing it with heavier tights and my Gap charcoal blazer for colder days, with my denim jacket and nude pumps in the spring, or on its own with sandals in the summer. And wouldn’t it look great with an orange satchel???</p> <p>So what do you think? Was it a good buy? How are the colours and proportions in this outfit?
