Here is the World Wildlife Foundation’s map showing polar bear status. We were in Western Hudson Bay, where the population is considered stable. The bears we saw looked pretty healthy. I guess so if they’re hunting belugas! I was very heartened by this development.</p> <p>Sterling, thank you so much. I took around 1500 pictures, so I had plenty to choose from. Here’s another of my favorite pictures.</p> <p>Jenn, thank you. I never felt anything but safe. The guides manage the bears in an escalating order of threat:</p> <p>Voice<br /> Louder, angrier voice (what a bad bear!)<br /> Clack rocks together<br /> Throw rocks<br /> Shoot off “bangers” and “screamers” with starter’s pistol<br /> Shoot off shotgun</p> <p>They didn’t shoot the shotgun. They shot off bangers and screamers just for our benefit, and they did have to throw rocks at two bears. Here’s a picture of a guide with his shotgun at the ready. He has rocks in his other hand.</p> <p>ETA: The guides also manage the bears by managing us. He was a tax accountant and he just couldn’t face another tax season. I guess I can’t really blame him.</p> <p>Lisa, I still wish you could have played hooky that day. Hopefully, another time. There might be good news for this particular population of bears. They are pretty smart, and appear to be adapting. The film crew recorded them hunting and feeding on belugas. Apparently they wait for high tide, stand on a rock, and jump on a whale as it swims by. I have pictures of whales with scars that look like they might have been caused by bears’ claws. The documentary should come out in 2021. However, there are nineteen recognized populations of polar bears, and the others may not be as lucky as this particular population. </p> <p>Suz, thank you. It was definitely a once in a lifetime trip. There was another couple that was celebrating retirement, and a couple celebrating a milestone anniversary. </p> <p>Cardiff girl, funny thing, I was showing some pictures to a friend this morning, and she cared deeply about the bears (and was crying) but didn’t care about the whales. Well, I was pretty excited to see the belugas! They got very close to our boats, and not just one at a time, but several. Also, the baby belugas are grey, not white. I’m glad I’m not the only one who loves the belugas.</p> <p>SarahD8, thank you. Some of the others in our group noticed I wore a lot of grey. They ended up making Friday’s their special together day, sort of like a date day. The other days of the week they had other activities with friends, Mum going to the gym, lawn bowls, bridge and dancing,. Dad had his business interests, golf and tennis.
