AG, knicker boxers! hehe they give a bit of street urchin vibe to me too.

Neel, remember to be kind to your body. They are very comfortable!

Thanks Beth Ann! Lol @ puffed sleeves: I have relatively broad shoulders and 'farmwoman' upper arms, so I'm sure the 'rules' would tell me not to wear them. But such is my love for Anne I do anyway. I'll trade weather with you! If it makes you feel better, it was 41 yesterday and is going to be in the low 50s for the next week.

Thanks Alexandra! Perhaps I'll see about bringing in the thigh seams just a bit, keeping the shape though.

Emily, lol! Luckily the fabric smooshes easily. I actually prefer the cold, which is why I'm moving north, so you're welcome to my weather!

I really like the tiny polka dots and the brooch. Actually, I like the whole outfit on you. The pants do look a bit off in the thigh area, probably because they narrow so suddenly at the knee at both the side seam and the inseam. Not sloppy though.

You have a great eye for finding things that pull together into whimsical, but not costumey looks. Love the top with Mr. Fox! I'm glad all those puffed sleeves that tortured me for 10 years (not a pretty sight on me at any age) have found such a lovely home -- they look natural as bees knees on you!

The trousers are quirky, but you're making that work to your advantage and I love a linen trouser!

I am sure the pants are cut that way. I had a similar linen pant in white. It did nothing for my figure but I used it happily during my pregnancy and nursing days! The most comfy lounge pants ever! Lounge pants because with my huge thighs I looked no where as put together as you do! Not sloppy on you at all IMO. But was definitely sloppy on me!

So if you like it, wear it with confidence :).

Hmmm: thanks for the additional input (and reassurance). I think it's tricky to go from seeing myself in the mirror to photos sometimes, if that makes sense!

You don't look sloppy - you dress with far too much attention to detail for that. Your "fit issues" may not be actual issues - you are clearly drawn to oversized looks and fits they suit you. Maybe you should trust yourself a little more. Hard to do, when no one else is following your drum, don't I know it!

Diana, I could definitely do a bit of basting and try that. Good suggestion, thanks. :) I think it's so interesting that some boxy blouses still feel feminine while others just feel boxy and blah. I've decided it helps if they have a yoke and gathering, so that's what I look for now after some accidental blah blouses!

Sarah, thank you!

MG, I'm 8-9 hours south of you. The trousers are seamed with 'saddle bags', definitely not stretched out. It's a curved seam, if that makes sense. I happen to have saddle bags (although I don't care for that phrase), in that my bones are also widest at the top of my thigh, so it's just a more exaggerated version of my actual shape. My mom thought it was strange that they'd be sewn that way deliberately too! Even if I take them in at the seams, I plan to preserve that curve though. And I'm beginning to wonder if my penchant for oversized clothing is deliberate or a result of compromising/overlooking fit problems. And just as important, is it perceived as intentional or sloppy. Something to mull over!

Vildy, oh yay. I really love the weirdness of them too, so I feel reassured that I'm not the only one!

Suz, oh good! See my reply to Vildy. I feel very relieved that my perception of them as deliberately shaped that way is not completely off base. I should have taken a profile picture too, because the waist/upper rear parts are obviously fitted, and then the trousers come out in a line, but without the wrinkles I associate with badly cut bagginess. Difficult to explain! Will have to do more photos when I've got the energy.

You know, I see what Vildy sees in the pants -- it looks to me as if they are made to be baggy. And in the heat, that sounds really good. I see it as an intentional look. And I quite like it!

I know what everyone's saying about removing the little flare out at the hem but geez, these are the weirdest cut trousers I've seen in a long while and I purely love them on you. That saucy little flare out makes them look intentionally oversize to my eye.

What?! 81! We only got to about 58 on Friday! And I was pleased it let let me wear something other than a wool pullover!

Anyway, this outfit is darling and very you. Love the little foxy fox and the polka dots. I'm a bit perplexed about the trousers. I do like them, but they are a bit odd in the thigh area for sure. What do they look like when you take them off and lay them flat? Does the thigh area balloon out? Since they are linen, they might react well to a hot water wash - I wonder if the previous owner had very muscular thighs and stretched them out? Of if they are jut oddly constructed??

I think given your general penchant for oversized clothing, these do not stand out as outrageously large, and are fine to wear as is. However I do think it's worth basting the side seams and seeing if you like effect.

Fun, the square neck on the blouse is really pretty on you, perfectly accented but your broach of course ;). I like Diana's idea of tapering the hems for a bit of harem feel on the trousers.

How do you feel about just tapering the bottoms a little? I could see these having a cool harem-ish vibe just so long as the bottom openings are tapered rather than flared.

Oh good question!

No, I don't tuck in to flat front trousers, especially not ones that hit me at the belly button! And especially especially not in hot weather! So I'd be wearing tops untucked, although in mild weather, I might wear them with waist defining tops (either fitted knits or woven blouses that are cut differently).

You look wonderful as always. If you plan to wear your shirts tucked out over the trousers like in the pictures, I think a little taking in of the sides would make them look more intentional. But if they have a fitted waist and you are thinking about tucking in, I would need to see that first before saying anything.

This outfit was actually from Friday, when it hit 81F/27C here (yes, I'm in the northern hemisphere). At first I was just outraged, but then I sighed and pulled out some pieces for one of my hot weather formulas, developed over 3 brutal south Texas summers. First up: a lightweight, woven, boxy blouse that allows for maximum breeze catching potential while concealing my braless state (so much cooler without elastic wrapped around my rib cage!). Since it was January, I chose a very dark teal colour for a more wintry feel. This was actually my very first woven, boxy blouse, that I thrifted soon after I moved here in 2010: it was a big risk at the time, because I was all about waist definition, but it sparked a love that grew into a closet full of woven blouses, many of them waist surrendering. So it has a special place in my heart: I also love the little polka dots (this is as much yellow as I can wear without looking jaundiced), the decorative top stitching on the neckline, and the puffed sleeves (I can't help it, they always makes me think of Anne). Next in this formula: either shorts or loose-ish tapered lightweight trousers. I refuse to wear shorts in January, unless there's tights involved, and I wanted to try out my new linen trousers anyway, so that was an easy decision. For indoor wear (I try not to run the a/c more than necessary to lessen my environmental impact), my 'third piece' was a brooch, a fox one to boost my mood (a smaller one probably would have gone better with the scale of the polka dots, but I was cranky about the weather and didn't care).

For outdoor wear, I prefer to keep my arms covered for sun protection reasons, so I add a lightweight long sleeve topper before walks, either a cardigan or boxy jacket. In this case, I stuck with dark winter colours by using a bitter chocolate silk cardigan. People are always surprised I'm wearing cardis in the summer (our days top 100/40 with terrible regularity), but as long as I don't button them, I can still catch a breeze, and I don't have to smear myself with as much sunscreen. For my walk I chose shoes that are comfy with bare feet, in a brown-ish colour to echo the cardigan. I was quite cool, partly because I chose to walk along shadey trails and there was a good breeze, but the dressing helped too. Because I enjoy seeing Ornella morph outfits, I thought I'd include what it looked like later in the evening, when the weather cooled off and my open windows led to slightly chilly feet and arms. I added some lightweight brown wool socks (I have a mild case of Raynaud's, which is why I almost always wear wool socks) and kept my cardigan on.

Now, about these trousers! They're my 5th January purchase, in a fabulous grey linen. I thought they'd be the perfect 'grey corduroy' equivalent for warm weather, with their lovely slubby appearance (I reach for my cords a ton to add texture to outfits). The waist fits me perfectly, and the taper at the bottom is quite nice and small too, so I assumed the exaggerated thigh width was a design element, a la jodphurs and plus fours. I felt quite jaunty and 1920s in them, actually. But my mom thinks they just look too big. I'm pretty sure it'd be easy to take them in on the side seams (and if not they were only $2, and I can use the fabric to make handkerchiefs), so I'm asking the forum if I should. Keep in mind, I'm not asking for figure flattery reasons: I know that skinny trousers show off my bottom half more. I'm asking if they look deliberately roomy or just sloppy & oversized. I've realise I can't quite trust my own eye on fit issues, and my goal for this year is to really work on the fit of my clothes. So brutal honesty is appreciated! I'm not easily offended. And I promise to listen this time. Oh! And the fabric is lightweight and drapey, not stiff at all, if that makes a difference. And the mirror behind me is making the inner thighs on the trousers look fuller than they actually are: I can see a bit of separation all the way to the fly when I look in the mirror.
