I agree with Angie and Aida. It's a nice outfit, but it does look like gear. To me gear always looks like gear, even if it tries to be "pretty". Know what I mean? Wearing gear is not a bad thing, but if you don't want to look like you're wearing it you have to search for normal clothes that are casual and practical, not gear that was made "prettier". Gear that really doesn't look like gear is really rare in my opinion. I think my new shorts are an example that such pieces exist, but you don't find them often. There are a few brands out there who have started to make normal and classic looking clothes in more technical and practical fabrics, but so far they're a very small minority. Everything you get to buy in outdoor or sports stores still looks like it was bought there, unfortunately.

Hah I love that you would pull over and hike! Sounds like how we roll on the weekends as well. Last year I determined that my summer non-work wear needed to be what I call "active casual" -- basically what you just described, something that would be fine for if we pulled over to hike on the way to a social event. This can be a tall order! I'm still working all the kinks out but I am doing a lot better this summer with it. A mix of some gear is sort of essential to this, and trying to figure out which gear pieces I feel fab enough in has been the main challenge.

My primary gear item is refined sneakers; I have the chambray Vans below, and am planning to pick up another pair in another shade. From there I look for pieces with natural fibers, or with at least 40% of a natural fiber. I have one pair of jeans for "weekend" that I can romp around in, along with a pair of denim shorts. Several patterned or colorful cotton or linen based tanks/tees/sweaters/shirts that I constantly remind myself "it's ok to mess this up!". And a lightweight dress or two. I'm also picking up a pair of slouchy capris (gear) for this little capsule. So far this has been working out very nicely!

An example in action: On Saturday hubby said let's go get lunch. I wore the dress below with gold smoking slipper flats; it was close to 90F, so the loose cotton dress was appropriately cooling. Somehow what we ended up actually doing was driving out to one of the nearby mountain passes, eating sandwiches at the base of the ski lodge there, taking a ski lift halfway up a mountain, and taking a short hike. This sort of thing happens often

That's a very good point, Aida and you have me pegged. I'm also dealing with the fact that gear is pretty "normal" for where I live. (That's somewhat true of Seattle, too, but it's even more pronounced here along the Front Range.) And I am not kidding when I say we occasionally pull over and take a short hike on our way to some social event. Gear is my constant fallback, but it's not where I want to be style-wise and I don't think it's representative of who I am. As I told Eva in my other thread, I'm equal parts museum and national park.

I was thinking the same as Angie, without the jacket it's a good ultra casual outfit. But to my eye the jacket pushes it over to gearish. I think either a different jacket (a denim jacket is a good easy choice and should jive with your style desires) OR leaving the jacket unzipped and wearing dressier shoes (like patent or colorful flats, especially if pointy or almond toe) would be better.

As an aside, I wanted to comment about "casual wear" for those of us who lead casual lives and work from home. I used to think that "casual" mean I had to go a step or two lower than what I was already wearing, but since that's casual to begin with the only place that could go was tooooo casual. I always felt unfab. I've since adjusted the way I think, allowing a LOT more overlap between my "normal work clothes" and those ultra casual pieces. After all it's all kind of in the same category soup, and there's no reason for me to "save" any of my casual clothes. Not sure if this is something you're facing, but just in case I wanted to mention it because it would have saved me a looooot of struggle if I'd gotten my head around that idea earlier!

Thanks, all. The best thing about taking photos of how I really dress every day this month is that it's making my wardrobe holes glaringly obvious. Which is a good thing. I have a really firm list in my head (and on paper) now of the pieces that would pull outfits together for me.

I think the ultra casual outfit works well without the jacket. A denim jacket would be as casual and less "gearish" as you described.

What a cute top that is. I like the slightly asymetrical hem to take it out of the realm of ordinary by adding an interesting detail to go with the neutral pattern. Lovely casual outfit Jenn.

Great casual outfit. I really love those burgundy pants--they seem to go with everything and the color is unexpected. I prefer the outfit without the jacket but agree that the herringbone pattern makes it a step above regular gear.

Casual day playing games and watching soccer with friends yesterday. It was almost 90°, but our friends' house is air-conditioned to a temperature lower than I'm used to, so I ended up in my jacket pretty much all day. I tried Diane's rubber band trick (pic #1) and liked the effect, but it ended up being too fussy for me (and unnecessary with the jacket).

I'm interested in your take on this, because it's a pretty gear-ish look, between the cargos and the athletic jacket, but I think the herringbone pattern (couldn't get the Find to link to the right one) may bring it up a bit from straight "workout attire."
