Well, I love flares (I'm wearing mine today) and if you want to see thighs, come look in my mirror - my mirror shows thick thighs (oh wait, those are my thighs!) Seriously, yours must be a funhouse mirror because I see no thigh issues in the photo.
Other than being a little long, I think they fit you perfectly.

I LOLed at Museumgal's response, because as you know, I'm hyperaware of my own thighs, which are significantly larger than yours. So I see absolutely no thigh issues at all in these jeans. They look fantastic on you, they just need a slight bit of hemming.

I love flares on my...ahem, substantial legs, but I admit that the proportions of my legs lengthwise may help me carry the look easier, despite my ample measurements from hip to knee. However, the proportions and fit of each pair of jeans is key, and therein lies the trick. How slim is the thigh cut, how much does the leg flare out from the knee, where is the fading in a faded wash, etc. I've tried on some flares that are AWFUL on me (the notorious Mother jeans I recently tried), due to incorrect proportions. These jeans look like they have really great proportions for your frame.

I don't know about the whole balanced thing - I feel that depends so much on proportions. How can one item balance EVERY body?

Rant aside, these look absolutely stunning on you and you are delusional if you see thigh issues here! Seriously.

Hi LL --

Hey, many of us have our zones (or features) we get hyper-critical or self-conscious about.

In general, I happen to like flares and bootcuts that are tight thigh-to-knee on women with straighter hips and athletic/curvy thighs...I like the effect of curves it brings. [This bias brought to you by a woman with the above body shape!]

Re these jeans on you -- thighs and rear view look great. [Applied own super-picky criteria here. ]

FWIW, one thing I do when choosing something that triggers a hang-up flag is to try to find a version of it I find really, really good. I wonder if you need to explore a few different washes so you can kind of lay to rest any misgivings?

In terms of voting, I feel like the puddling is interfering with my final leaning Y vote -- as someone who also has to get jeans hemmed, I do want to see these with your higher heels and/or clipped up *just* in case it changes anything re balance on your petite frame.

Which reminds me...do you currently have bootcuts and if so, how wide are they? Any photos for compare and contrast?

I've never stopped wearing my bootcuts, but I have baby boots at 16" wide and some at 18." At 5'4 I personally don't like going much wider in jeans but see "hang-ups" above, ha (wool trousers are ok and I love the swoosh factor, but objectively I prefer straighter leg there on me).

Funny.... what you describe you see on yourself, is exactly what I see on myself, when I try on pants like this. However while it always makes me say "neah", I think it actually looks great on you!

Body image s***... sigh....

I think with these, once they are hemmed, the reduced volume on the bottom will actually go in your favour, to help balance the look a bit.

April, I'm 100% certain I love wide legged pants more and believe them to be usually flattering on my small frame. I wear them actually fairly often.

MuseumGal, LOL! thanks! I recognize my non-objectivity completely and own up to it. I'm trying to determine exactly *how much* of it is in my head vs. the reality of how the jeans look.

IK, thank you so much. Knowing that you have a bias against flares as I do yet don't see fugliness going on here is exactly the objectivity and honesty I'm seeking

Hmm. I do not see thick-looking thighs (and I'm fussy about such things since this is a thicker area on me as well). What I am wondering, though, is whether the flare shape is as flattering as an overall wide-leg look would be. The exaggeration of the snug upper leg and then the dramatic flair is a lot to of contour for a petite person such as yourself.

I've seen you many of you lovely ladies here really rock the flared jeans look. The last time flares came round in style I wasn't a big fan for a number of reasons.

Primarily because they are always too long on me and if you have to shorten them by more than an inch or so I think it throws off the proportions. Which only further accentuates my other reason for not being crazy about them: the tightly pinched knee flaring out to the hem I believe draws attention to the thickest part of me: where the top of my thigh meets the bottom of my butt (my crotch area, in other words) --and makes it look even wider.

Supposedly it's this exact cut that makes you look more balanced. So I truly believe I have an utterly non-objective poison eye for flare jeans.

So of course I had to challenge myself to get over it (or at the least get some other more objective opinions on the matter, and that's where you all come in).

Since they were having a big online sale, For $20 I bought a pair of high-waisted Artist jeans from American Eagle. They came in short lengths, and I'd heard good things about them and seen several of you wear them in your WIW photos, and thought they looked really flattering on you. So I decided I'd give flares another chance.

While there are some elements in this go-round of flares that I like (the higher waist, for example. The last incarnation of flares were primarily low rise/hip hugger which made the thick-thigh effect even worse on me, imho) I'm still not convinced they look that great (I will admit these are pretty darned comfortable, though).

Admittedly, even at the short length these are still about an inch too long for me. I can tell by how the leg breaks over the pointy toe boots I'm wearing them with. So I'll either need to have them shortened by between a half inch and an inch (most likely the case) or reserve them to only wear with the few sky high platform heels I can still wear that don't exacerbate my foot issues (the shoes I'm wearing them with have about a 2.5 inch heel on them and are very comfortable).

I kept the rest of the outfit incredibly simple (for me, anyway) and made no effort to match or coordinate overall. I wanted to wear the flares in a simple, casual way. So I just went with some colors I thought paired well together and a couple of interesting/semi-bold pieces of jewelry.

I thought the bright berry tones of the tucked in muscle tank went well with the deep bottle green of the leather moto jacket and the more blousy effect of it tucked into the high waist of the jeans helped create some balance against the snug-fit top half of the jeans and the flared bottom half.

My BF said he thought they looked as nice as any of my other skinny, slouch, cigarette or bootcut jeans. I still see droopy (non-flattering) butt and thicker looking thighs.

So, other than recognizing that the length is still ever-so-slightly too long and will need to be adjusted, would all of you fab fashionistas mind giving me your more objective opinion on whether these flare jeans are complimentary on my figure overall?

As always, your thoughts and opinions are very much appreciated!
