<p>Aubergine, you put that so beautifully! I bet that thought was consoling to a lot of teens. I read The Blue Castle for the first time a few years ago &amp; adored it. I want a copy of my own so I can reread it whenever I need a pick me up! (&amp; I too didn't read kid-focused ones nearly as frequently.)</p>
<p>Alexandra, I bet I could quote long passages too. So fun to meet other Montgomery lovers! Matthew still makes me cry, as much for Marilla nowadays as Anne.</p>
<p>Suz, I agree; I think as a child I would have loved them equally for different reasons. She does need a guy like her dad: at least she didn't marry Dean! *shudder*

<p>Emily's a very different character than Anne, and the books have a different tone. I agree with you, E, that the first two are better. And Teddy is really such a bore! I much preferred Perry. Well, not in my youth -- in my youth I was as in love with Teddy as Emily is. What she really needed was a guy like her dad....

<p>I need to find the Emily books. I grew up with Anne - still my favorite series ever. I read the first book so many times, I could quote fairly long passages from it. I cried every time when I got to the part where Matthew died.

<p>E, I definitely loved Montgomery's descriptions of her heroines! The idea that I might be a striking, unconventional beauty with deep, expressive eyes, but just not realize it, was very consoling to me as a teenager. I loved the Anne books too -- re-read them even more than the Emily ones, although a few of&nbsp;the later ones that are mostly about her kids doing cute kid stuff&nbsp;never drew me quite as much. The Blue Castle was another favorite of mine. I think I've read all every Montgomery book at least once, but it's been a while since I've picked any of them up -- clearly I need to go back!

<p><div>Aquamarine, thank you!</div><div><br /></div><div>MG, you made me laugh and blush at the same time. :D</div><div><br /></div><div>Astrid, faux fur definitely makes things feel cosy. Your boss's outfit sounds great.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Emily, thanks! I would have only added my rings, but I'm glad it doesn't look unfinished without them.</div><div><br /></div><div>Thistle, thank you!</div><div><br /></div><div>Sara, I got them in the little clearance room of Anthropologie for about $12 ages ago: maybe 2008 or 2009? They're wool &amp; beautifully made, so all I can think is that no one else likes winter shorts, that the price would get that low.</div><div><br /></div><div>GP, I love mint, but I can only wear the muted/heathered versions, and it's really difficult to find that shade. I'm always on the lookout for more! And I have to stop myself from petting my scarf in public. ;D Can't wait to see you in your pair of winter shorts!</div><div><br /></div><div>Aubergine, thank you. I feel so lucky my mom picked out the perfect colours for me without any input! hehe This was my first time reading the Emily books (I read the other two last year), but I've read and reread the Anne books since I was 7 or 8. It's interesting how she gives her heroines a more 'moonlit' kind of beauty, isn't it? I remember in one of the Anne books there's something about Anne's beauty not showing in the mirror, because it was in the movements of her face, and that gave me so much hope when I hit puberty and suddenly hated mirrors. Who wouldn't want purple-grey eyes?</div><div><br /></div><div>Janet, wow! Thank you!</div><div><br /></div><div>Katiepea, thnx!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you Deb!</div><div><br /></div><div>Shevia, it was surprisingly fun to describe it in words! And thank you.</div><div><br /></div><div>K, thanks!</div><div><br /></div><div>Beth Ann, it is! I read the Anne books millions of times when I was young (and still reread them), but it didn't occur to me as a child to see if she'd written other books. So I've been slowly reading the rest of her works over the past few years. Thnx for the wise advice re: the shorts. I remember being 14 and despairing of not being able to afford the clothes most of my peers could (we were middle class, the high school I went to was upper upper middle class, and I didn't yet know about thrifting &amp; ebay) and thinking that by the time I was old enough to afford them I'd be too old to wear them and there wouldn't be anything else I'd want to buy and it'd all be tragic. Of course, now I know taste continues to evolve, and there are always expensive pretties to admire. ;)</div><div><br /></div><div>Suz, oh how interesting! I only discovered Emily last year (I think? maybe 2 years ago?), so of course Anne is my favourite, as she's been a kindred spirit from age 7 or 8. We've grown up together. But Emily is wonderful too, especially in the first 2 books (in this one, I wanted the Teddy plotline resolved about fifty pages before it was). I was very jealous of her bridesmaid dress, and really all of her clothes in this book sounded just delicious. I love that once she starts making her own money she treats herself to silk dresses in her favourite dreamy colours! And buys property so no one will mess with its natural beauty! I'm afraid I know exactly what Aunt Elizabeth would say about those shorts. ;)</div><div><br /></div><div>Gracie, I think winter shorts are very practical for our climate too! Gives us a feel of cold weather with the wool but doesn't make us overheat.</div><div><br /></div><div>Neel, I don't think you're in the US, but in case you are, my mom got it at Dillard's last month. It might still be there!</div><div><br /></div><div>Ingunn, I love that expression! When I found the cardigan while thrifting (2 years ago maybe?), I was almost delirious with excitement. It was a large, so I ended up sending it through the laundry a few times to shrink it until the shoulders fit, and now I plan to keep it forever. Do Norwegians wear fur? I ask because when I studied abroad in Russia, it seemed like all of the women wore it. Of course Norway's culture and political climate are very different from Russia's, so I was just curious. I love faux fur, because I get the feel of it without the ethical issues, but I doubt it's as insulating as the real stuff would be.</div><div><br /></div><div>Joi, thank you! All of my summer shorts are mid-thigh too. I just hate how I look in bermudas.</div><div><br /></div><div>Rute, thnx!</div><div><br /></div><div>Alexandra, thank you! It's funny, I actually think of my legs as a&nbsp;bit too thin, so the compliments are warmly appreciated. :)</div>

I far preferred them to the Anne books. And read them ....oh....maybe 8 or 9 times....</p>
<p>I think Emily would have approved of your soft sea foam sweater. I don't know what Aunt Elizabeth would say about those shorts, and Aunt Laura would probably have looked worried....but Aunt Ruth would approve of the sensible boots, and&nbsp;I'm sure Cousin Jimmy would have offered a cookie. And then Saucy Sal would have come by to snuggle with your foxy collar. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cuteness! &nbsp; You look stylish and cozy. &nbsp;I really like the faux-fur scarf for you, too. &nbsp;Agree with MuseumGal that no jewellery is necessary.

<p>You look lovely! Love the winter shorts and the color of the sweater is fantastic. It looks very cozy. Seems like it's the day for faux fur collars, my boss was also wearing one today (over an all buttoned up shirt layered under a long cardigan).

<p>AAAHHHH!!!!!&nbsp; OMG!!! SO CUTE, I am struck speechless.&nbsp; Well except for the yelling, ha.&nbsp; The shorts look like a little mini-skirt, making this very very Lyra to my eye.&nbsp; The faux fur thing is all kinds of awesome, and the soft muted colors&nbsp; are so <i>you</i>.&nbsp; Simply amazing getup, and you don't need jewelry to finish it off.&nbsp; I can't even tell you how much I love this.

<p>E...you have the legs to rock those shorts. I agree the length works for you, as well as the scarf! Fun look!

<p>Yep, the faux fur is coming out to play! Actually, it's come out quite frequently since I received it, as it seems to magically match any outfit I add it to. But as I haven't been documenting my outfits, this is its debut for the forum!</p>
<p>The outfit was actually inspired by both Grace, with her <a rel="nofollow" href="http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/wiw-winter-shorts">recent post</a> about winter shorts, and Janet, who <a rel="nofollow" href="http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/wiw-backwards-bw">wore a cardigan backwards</a>. The weather forecast today was cool but not cold, so I thought it would be perfect to wear my own winter shorts, which are considerably shorter than Grace's and thus more suitable for in-between weather. I wanted to try wearing a cardigan backwards, so I grabbed the top one on the pile (one of my favourites) and gave it a go. Unfortunately, the back of the neck was too high for it to feel comfortable, so I had to turn it around and wear it the regular way. I left it buttoned up like a jumper/pullover though. And then I thought this would be a perfect outfit to finish up with the fur! I added brown tights to play with all of the colours in the cowl (scarflette? collar? not sure what this is), and my grey-brown boots to finish things off. Honestly, I was out the door to run errands before I remembered jewelry, so today was a no jewelry day!</p>
<p>As Michelle has rejoined the forum, I thought I would take a stab at describing this: I'm wear a buttoned up cardigan on top. It's a soft, heathered&nbsp;seafoam green cashmere one with a fluid fit that hits me at high hip, with dark mother-of-pearl buttons. Over top of it, I'm wearing a short faux fur collar that has silvery grey, brown, and taupe in it. On bottom, I'm wearing medium grey wool shorts that are full and end mid-thigh, with black button detailing that's a little bit nautical, and dark brown cotton tights that are fairly opaque. My boots come to just below my knee, are a dark grey-brown colour, with a rounded toe and sturdy sole and 1" heel, and one tiny button on the outside of each one.</p>
<p>I'm pretty exhausted after running my errands, so I'm off to curl up with a book (Emily's Quest by LM Montgomery)&nbsp;and relax for awhile. I definitely have a high happiness factor today: the wool and cashmere and fur feel luxurious and comforting&nbsp;while the shorts add the touch of whimsy that the forum has made me realise I need to feel completely me. But more on that soon!</p>
<p>As always, all comments, suggestions, &amp; critiques are welcome. I do wonder at what age I'll be too old for mid-thigh shorts! But I think they're so much more figure flattering than knee high ones, for me at least. Am I right in thinking the faux fur scarf blends well with my style or should I work harder to build outfits around it?
