When I worked one floor under the top floor of University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning I kept retired running shoes to hedge the prospect of 35 flights of stairs in an emergency. It's so easy to get caught in the emotion of the moment. I'm not saying it's not important to be able to run in an emergency, just put the experience into perspective. A good pair of running shoes under your desk may well be sufficient given the likelihood you'll ever really have to use them, and you can still enjoy the gorgeous booties.
