You both look terrific and it does sound like a fun time. Love the setting for the pic of your son!!

My eldest son (16) has 18 months more left at high school and we are choosing last year courses right now...and what impact that will have on his college/uni choice.....choices here are more limited than the USA but still broad. He is doing Film and TV at school as well - he does not look the part though LOL!!

Angie, thank you! I actually think the top is far more flattering than it might appear in this practical bf jeans combo, too. I’m looking forward to pairing with skinnies and layering it under jackets this fall

Kiddo would love your Seattle observation. He lived there between the ages of 6 and 10, and I know that experience (plus visiting once or twice every year since) still influences his aesthetic.

Teresa, thanks! It's fun to hear from other families who have been through this process, as most of my close friends either don't have kids, or have kids younger than ours. Having kiddo in our mid-late twenties put my husband and me on the leading edge of our friends who decided to have families. We are lucky to have several universities within an hour's drive of our location in Colorado, so some of these pre-application visits are just to give H some insight into types of programs and different sizes of school to narrow application decisions.

shevia, I swear, kiddo is becoming much more like me as he gets older. He used to be much more like his dad!

bj1111, thanks! I like to think that I'm not old enough for that, either, but the truth is that I was 27 when he was born, so not a terribly young mom. Still, it's weird to be looking at an empty nest when my husband's brother and his wife, who are just a year or two younger than us, have a second grader! I will definitely share more if the geographic change becomes certain. Some sort of change will -definitely- happen in the next few years, but one possibility is surfacing earlier than anticipated. It's a weird, uncertain time.

Laurie, film and biology! Wow, those are two fields that don't have much curriculum overlap!

Ahhhh this takes me back many years now when I posted WIW's from the big spring break college tour. I also loved looking at all of those schools. Between soph and junior year, the focus was on film schools. Then the focus was on biology, with film and photography on the side, which is what my son ended up doing. One huge lesson I've learned is that they have to want to do what they are doing, especially if it is super challenging. We cannot will it to happen, even if we want them to do it, or think it is the best thing for them.

You look great and happy. Enjoy it all.

Have a ball with this process! It sounds like you are. I took my son to Denver and looked at schools (He too was convinced he wanted to leave the country for school, but ended up just a couple hours from home:). He’s heading into his senior year of college now—he’s so enjoyed the school he chose, and it reinforced my feeling that there are many good matches, not just one.

Oh gryffin, that PE story sounds all too familiar! Also, we have tried SO many organizational systems over the last 12 years, I don't even want to think about it.

Thanks for your sweet words, Jane. One thing I didn't mention earlier is that I woke up with a migraine before this tour, and literally had been nauseated and vomiting for an hour before we had to leave. It's a miracle I even managed to get dressed and sort of brush my hair!

Jenn - I can so relate. My husband and I are type A's, organized, proactive. Our son is a total type B. He's an overachiever when he wants to be and under performs in things he doesn't like. He's a good student, honor roll, NHS, but he's locked out of top tier (you know has 100 in gym, doesn't take the final gets a C - ARGH!!! the stupid stuff to kill your GPA). But there is the realization that you need to let go, you can influence but you have no control. This is not our dream, it's his dream and it is truly thrilling to watch, when they find their passion, to see where it takes them. Although I wish I could instill my organizational skills and proactivity, he would not be who he is then. Letting him walk his path and not interfering, that's my constant goal and challenge. Although just when you think he's not listening, I hear him giving his friend my "grit" talk almost verbatim. So it's an art, when to voice your thoughts and when to let them find their way. But kudos to your insight and excellent judgement!!

gryffin, thank you for your kind words. I've had to let go of a lot of expectations, and that's been a good thing, mostly. I was an overachiever type when I was in HS, and I kind of expected any child of mine to end up the same, but my son is very different from me. We worked hard to expose him to a lot of different things when was little (science camp! theatre camp! music festivals! programming! robotics! soccer! kendo!), and it seems like at this point, he knows where his passions lie and is perfectly happy to take a D- in chemistry, so he can spend a hundred extra hours to get an A+ in poetry. Don't get me wrong...that can be infuriating for a parent, and the end result of that tendency is a solid C-average, so the college search is what it is at that point. And despite this, he's really likable, even for teachers whose classes he doesn't do well in--last summer, he won a scholarship to leadership camp, based on the strength of teacher recommendations and his committee interview (The committee chair called me and said, "His GPA is abysmal, but we enjoyed talking to him so much!")--so I'm all in on him choosing a career where networking and passion trump academic achievement!

The options that students have today are kind of mind boggling and overwhelming. And their interests and self-knowledge can change dramatically in such a short time. We all assumed DD would prefer a small school bas3d on her tiny high school and her personality, yet one of her favorites ended up being the only large one she applied to.

Ha, Karen. My kiddo isn’t even close to having a front runner narrowed down. At this point, he’s not even sure what country he wants to be in. And, let’s just say, the admissions process should narrow things down considerably.

You look great. I wish that top came in petites, it sounds wonderful. I just finished a year of college touring with DD - wish I was going to some of those places. Exciting and somewhat stressful times - enjoy,

My tiny piece of advice is if your son can ID a favorite, Early Decicion is a really great option. I think DD fell in love with a school late in her junior year, but felt she had to apply to other places. She ended up getting into a lot of great schools and then felt she had to visit a bunch to compare. Part of why I’ve been absent from YLF for a while. She chose the one she loved all along, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. If she had just applied ED, she would have saved tons of pain effort money and time. All kids and families have a different process, and ED has pros and cons, but the more your kid can narrow the list early, the better.

BTW “Where You Go is not Who You’ll Be” by Frank Bruni is a great book for parents (and kidS) in this process.

La Pedestrienne, yup, it's the Beechwood modal. I'm curious how it will hold up as well. Fingers crossed. It's incredibly soft, and I very well might just hand wash it to try to keep it in good shape. Washing instructions are delicate cycle, no tumble dry.

I have to say, touring green screen stages, equipment cages, and sound studios is way more interesting than the ordinary classrooms of my English degree.

Amour Vert makes really nice stuff. I only have one piece from them (my tweedy cotton Chanel-type jacket) but would love to add more. Their printed silk dresses always look so amazing... just waiting for "my" print. Is this their jersey fabric? I've been very curious about it, and would love to know how it holds up over time.

And screenwriting! How cool. Your kiddo looks like he'll fit right in with the film school crowd.

One of the coolest things about having a kid is all those potential futures they have ahead of them. We’ve been doing college tours with kiddo recently, and got to tour the campus and film program at CU Denver yesterday.

Not a terribly exciting outfit-- I dressed for lots of walking in boyfriend jeans, Converse, and a knit top, but I love this new Amour Vert surplice halter! First wear for it, and it didn’t fall open or threaten too much cleavage once. And, though it looks gray from a distance, the fabric is actually a fine stripe. Nordies has a few colors (though not this one) so I’ll link the find from there, as well as my custom find.

Bonus pic: what kiddo wore. I think he pretty much looks like how I’d imagine an aspiring screenwriter.
