Such a sweet post! I have a similar photo of my son at age 5, wearing a birthday crown and blowing out the candles on his cake. Enjoy every minute, Ornella. In a blink of an eye, he'll be grown and off to college. My guy is home on Spring Break this week and I am loving every minute of it!

Ornella you look beautiful in both outfits but the story about you giving a talk to your son's class in German with him translating just killed me (in a good way I mean). That was so brave of you! And I feel your pride in your wonderful son - my son is also a lego maven and I am extremely impressed by your son's accomplishments!

Julie :: thank you. Btw, Salvatore had just been posted in separated thread... The sound of Lego hitting the floor... then sliding and rolling with jingling sound to the furthermost or most difficult to access corner of the room... followed by "mum, I can't find it"... good thing I've developed special search techniques years ago when I dropped my first contact lenses, boy - did that skill come useful numerous times or what, lol!

This is such a fun thread. First, your outfits are classic and pretty. I especially love #1.

On to Legos. I fondly remember hours and hours of fun with these back in the 70s, man what a fun toy. We had a huge tupperware container full of them, and the noise it would make when we dumped them all on the kitchen floor was like a joyful plastic explosion! Your son's vehicle is inspirational, a bit like a mechanical dragon. Thanks for sharing all the fun!

Jeanne :: we were typing at the same time. Thank you! Do I need to mention vacuuming is done with special care in our household Same as you, I can't count these things even if I wanted to, but we do reap rewards from them. What we try to explain is the concept of value and patience, so his appetites don't go through the roof. Granparents are a different story, we have to explain to them that it's better to save for one set he wants and put the rest of the money on the savings account for when he's older, but they are tough to teach!
Funny what you say about Friends, I once mentioned jokingly it would be fun to have my own special Legos and ever since he's been "offering" me those as an option, for one - he's probably thinking it's girl's colors, but secondly, I know he wants to lay his hands on some of the special pieces he eyed in those sets only, so I'm his excuse to try and get them.

Joy :: thank you and how fun is that our Lego "babies" have their birthdays so close. I wish yours all the best. Funny what you mention about the sets, we have all boxes and instructions neatly stored, we simply use this opportunity to teach him to take care of such things. Of course, the bricks are a different story, most of them except some precious models are in a big pile (which, btw, travelled with us directly when we moved countries, taking precious space in the car, rather than coming with removal truck!), but he we realized that it would be a waste to restrict his imagination to play with original models only, when he can create amazing things from all sorts of bricks. I'm keeping the info about the value of discontinued pieces at the back of my mind, just in case :-D

Jayne :: a while back similar sort of outfit was WIW-ed, it *was* date night outfit ;-)

Aida :: thank you. I do miss my pencil skirts.

Una :: Salvatore was busy the day before the birthday (separate post to come) and his outfit would have been too warm on the day. White in kg, that never crossed my mind, I guess I was super-lucky.

You look lovely and your little man is adorable. We are up to our waists in Legos here (son of 8 has more than I could ever count and DD now 4 is entering into Lego Friends), but I mind them less than most toys as they teach motor skills and are often used in other creative ways from the original build. My son has been building the Lego sets since he was about 3 and is also quite accomplished in them. I step in when he can't work something out (usually he's rushed through an instruction and missed something which I find quite like a man-"Instructions? who needs those??")
I have my own collection of minifigures that I pretend are for the kids.

Ornella, you look wonderful in both outfits. Your adorable son's birthday reminds me that time only speeds up. My Lego-loving "baby" had a birthday this week too and was much like your son at that age. He sold most of his Legos from when he was about 6 for hundreds of dollars when he was in college. He'd carefully kept all the boxes and instructions, but what made them valuable were discontinued pieces. I think he had cannons that really shot little cannon balls and the newer versions didn't.

Beth Ann, Sarah, Suz, Kalli, Mona, MaryK :: thank you.

Raisin, Ceit :: Thank you too, for the good wishes as well. For the rest of my comment (see below marked with *) Lego should send a few "thank you" sets our way :-)

Katie :: belated happy birthday to your son. Thank you for your compliments and for always being so observant and kind. To answer your questions, yes, I've only been learning German since moving here last summer, but that has been very erratic and unstructured due to lack of time, as we had focused our time and energy on looking for a house to buy (that episode had been completed a month ago as posted about here). I haven't started any course, which I plan soon now that I can finally focus on myself mainly. My only exposure to the language was 15 years ago when I worked on a contract job in Hungary for several months and in my rented apartment there I only had TV channels in Hungarian and German, so I guess I had gotten used to the sound of the language, but that's all. After making some start with the learning here, I've realized that I should use whatever I know and learn through direct interactions with others, for now at least, shying away from it is a waste of time and so far others have been very appreciative of my efforts. And today, my son was translating whenever I was stuck (often!), so I was ok.
Yes, 6 is amazing age, I'd get all mushy if I go into details :-)

(* - for those who asked about Lego Chima and who don't mind me showing off )
We love the set. We don't know the story behind it, but he's at the stage when it's all about goodies and baddies, fighting and swords, and these sets have such things in abundance. How easy it is or not for a 6 year old? To give you an idea of his abilities, he had put Lego set 7207 in 3 hours when he was 4.5, or 9494 in 2 hours when he was 5.5 yo. He always puts all sets together by himself, we only step in to click some pieces in when it's too hard. And he designs amazing things himself, e.g. Chima set he wanted is 70005 and he watched ads for it, then designed this thing on the photo. We examined it and realized his vehicle had got many details from the "real" product that we never noticed but he did, he's got great eye for detail and everything is always perfectly symmetrical.
It took him some of the morning, before the kindergarden, and the whole afternoon to put his gif set together, but he managed it all alone. So, yes, for enthusiastic 6 yo it is quite a project, but fun and very rewarding.

Btw, the best thing of all is that we have started making up stories about the characters and now every evening at bedtime I have to come up with the new adventures.)

Happy birthday to your son and the cake looks yummy! You are rocking the white button down with that pencil skirt in #1 and white turtle neck is adorable on you. Love both these outfits and thanks for sharing the birthday pics with us!

Ornella, I love your classic simplicity. And I also love your joy in wearing clothes and accessories you've had to put away for a while. They are old, good friends who jump in to help in a time of need. Totally proving Angie's arguments about the value of classic pieces!

Your son is adorable. Six is a great age! May you both enjoy it.

The time flies doesnt it! Your boy is so cute, I love legos too! And am so impressed you spoke at his school in German. I love the simplicity of both of your crisp white topped outfits and the pendant with 2 is the perfect finishing touch.

Oh my, your post melts my heart! Before I get focused on your outfits I just have to make the two following observations:

First up, I just have to wonder - have you only been learning German since you've lived there? If so, can I just say the fact that you were *brave* enough to speak a second language in *front *of an audience requires a massive round of applause! Go you, I just have to say I am so impressed!!! :-)

Secondly, I love the care and effort you've gone for Master 6. It is such a special age, and I'm sure he'll remember it always. (My own little fellow became a Master 6 just last November - I'm sure you'll agree it is the cutest age!)

Finally, as always, you look picture perfect in both your outfits. I just have to say that I adore the pencil skirt outfit in particular. Fantastic!

You look great, in both outfits!

Chima!! I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to play with these sets. I think my husband and I are more excited about the LEGO than she is

Oh, happy birthday to your little guy! You looked very classy!

My oldest is turing 6 in June, and I see those Chima things everywhere, are they easy enough for the 6 year olds? They look very cool!

The pencil outfit is crisp and perfect! And the white turtleneck brings such light and focus to your face!

You look great for a busy week.
