Thnx again everyone! Especially for chiming in on the length; I will get over my kneecap thing. lol

Angie, wow! My first killer. :)

Sheila, thnx! My niece already steals some clothes from me, lol; it'll be fun if she has a similar style when she's my age.

Claire, older skirts are the only ones with waistbands that fit my natural waist, I think because nowadays the style is more dropped waist, so even size 0s don't sit high enough. This is a contemporary skirt but luckily I could disguise a couple of tucks within the pleats when I took it in. I'm tempted to try out petticoats, but I've never come across one thrifting! Next year I think I'm going to try out sewing, so then I can just sew my own.

Aubergine, my dad's family is from Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh actually (Butler).

I second the opinions that the skirt is not too short on you and looks good at that length. However, I have the same opinion of exposed kneecaps on myself, i.e. feeling the skirt is too short.

Beautiful outfit proportions! I love how the skirt peeks out from under that fabulous coat, too. The quality really shows. I think thrifting skirts is such a good idea for you, since you can find older ones with really tiny waist bands to fit you. Even though you think it's a little short, I think the silhouette is very flattering. Do you ever play around with petticoats?

Sorry about posting & running! It was a family day & we all went to the ballet in the evening. :)

Thnx K & Beth Ann! My mother agrees with you re: skirt length. Rationally, I know just above my knee isn't short, and I wear mid thigh shorts in summer, so I don't know what my hang up is. lol

Scarlet, thank you! The skirt isn't an Anthro brand I don't think (tag says Max Studio), but it definitely reminds me of their style.

Aubergine, don't forget Russian pirozhki and Chinese dumplings! Food is always worth thinking about imho.

Ornella, I adore museums. I always take far too many photos & can happily spend all day wandering them, although I like it when there are well placed benches so I can take a break and admire my favourites. I really want to get back to the Victoria & Albert Museum, but I'm not sure when I'll be in London again (I spent 7 years of my childhood in England). Thnx so much for your kind words: I do enjoy getting dressed! And I always love your posts.

MG, we didn't get snow. :((((( We're so close but temps were right around 34 instead and no actual precipitation. And the hat & gloves were my first two knitting projects.

It's definitely interesting to see how different cultures end up doing things among similar lines. I think about food way too much, so I always love noticing this with food in particular. (For example, think of how many cultures have a kind of food that's basically dough with a savory filling: Knishes, ravioli, samosas, empanadas…)

Anyway, the skirt is beautiful and I love how you winterized it! And the coat definitely looks like a very smart long-term purchase.

There are so many layers to this - and I'm not talking clothes only. You e.n.j.o.y crating your outfits and know why you wear each piece - which thrills me to no end.

Your outfit is your usual playful and adorable. Btw, I love the hat and the gloves. The skirt is amazing and since many of us here think red is a neutral, I am sure it will work just fine with your wardrobe even though it's a bit brighter than what you normally wear. I hear you about not being able to leave that gem once you saw it.

I love your thoughts about traditional clothing. I think there's a lot to it and it's worth exploring through the prism of today's attitude towards clothing, trends, style. And I bet you get inspiration from just visiting museums

I love folk/popular art and traditional folk clothing; it's so fascinating to see how different cultures solved the problems of getting dressed, and while they're all individual, it's fun to also find the similarities (I've noticed in old photos women are almost always in full skirts, from Estonia to the Andes). So when I came across this skirt while thrifting a few weeks ago, I knew I had to have it, even if the red was a bit brighter than my usual and the waist too big. Look at that embroidery! I took the waist in recently (of course, once I had it in, I realised that now the skirt was a bit shorter than my ideal, exposing my entire knee cap, but oh well) and then tried on various tops with the skirt to figure out how to integrate it into my wardrobe. I'd found a few options I liked and was looking forward to wearing it, when the photo challenge was announced and I saw the Santana album. The skirt would be perfect for that, so I waited, and then on Thursday I pulled it out.

I actually meant to wear a teal long sleeve tee a la this palette , but the weather had cooled off, so I decided this cardigan would keep my warmer. I added the cami with bow neckline (which I just realised is the piece in my closet that I've had longest, as I had it my sophomore year of college, in 2005) to bring the skirt embroidery colour up into the top, but it played a bit better with the neckline of my original tee shirt than the cardigan. And then I added blue stockings in a very similar colour to the cardigan, although they're not photographing that way; they also have a kind of jagged stripe pattern, adding a bit to the business, which seemed appropriate considering the album cover! I felt really good in this all day, a little bit old fashioned, a little bit contemporary.

For my walk, it had gotten colder (41F/5C), and I wasn't wearing a ton of wool layers, so I pulled out my bigger winter coat. It's navy blue wool (with some nylon mixed in), I bought it halfway through college, and it saw me through the next two Midwest winters and then through Colorado weather and is still going strong (except I need to lint roll it)! It's from the Gap, and I remember hunting the post-Christmas sales (I hadn't yet discovered secondhand shopping) to find just the right thing. I'm very grateful to past me for choosing a classic, warm, hardwearing neutral. Since the coat covered up most of the colour, I decided to bring a bit of Santana in with my teal hat & matching fingerless gloves (they also help since the cardigan has bracelet sleeves). Finally I pulled on a thicker pair of tights under my stockings (they're a very pale pink, so that's why it looks like bare leg) and added my higher lace up boots for a folksy touch and for Museum Girl! I was super warm and toasty in this, in fact I ended up extending my walk just to enjoy the weather more.

Comments and suggestions always welcome!
