Rabbit, please do an outfit with your tailcoat! I want to see it! I loved my poet blouses in high school too, although I don't think I styled them very well. ;)

Joy, my mom is like that too, although I think she has finally loosened up a bit recently. She used to wear heels everywhere, including hiking (her concession for hiking was shoes with block heels rather than pumps). On trails, for sure, but even still. And she still wears a skirt almost every day, including for doing yard work and yes, mowing the lawn.

Beth Ann, nobody said anything in real life! The only one of my Fashion Era outfits that got IRL comments was the grunge one. Which of course is not so far off from what some of my co-workers actually wear. Hilarious. I think everyone is used to me wearing crazy things by now, but when I do anything resembling normcore or super casual, everyone notices.

I just adore this outfit on you!! Even as late as the 50's and early 60's people were very concerned about wearing the right uniform. Even later my father refused to wear jeans and didn't see how we could because he and we were not farmers. He mowed the yard in a suit and old dress shoes.
My mother who was having problems with skirts getting caught in her wheelchair, could not imagine wearing a trendy jogging outfit because she obviously was not a jogger. Each occupation had it's uniform of sorts.

This is too cute -- I particularly love the white shirt layered under the red vest. There is something about the form-fitting and yet tailored and modest cuts of pre-1900 menswear that is just very attractive on women I think.

I also really love Victorian and Regency menswear, and have a tail-coat, I might have to do a modified/modernized WIW too sometime soon. Actually in high school one of my favorite outfits was a white poet blouse - frothy cuffs, with a red suede fitted vest over it with tight black or tan jeans and granny boots. I felt like lord Byron.

Thanks, everyone.

It occurred to me that the gold chain on the necklace is also like a pocket watch chain. I suppose I could have just borrowed my husband's actual pocket watch but I don't have the appropriate pockets for it.

The Victorians were very, very concerned about dressing appropriately for the occasion, so I figured for my Victorian-inspired outfit, I should wear something appropriate for my occupation. It also goes with my personal rule that I have to wear my outfits in my daily life, which on weekdays means going to the lab.

So, for my Victorian scientist outfit, I started with a waistcoat over a white shirt, as any respectable gentleman would never been seen without his waistcoat. In my case, my waistcoat is also somewhat reminiscent of a ladies' corset, although it's stretchy and comfortable rather than constricting. The blouse has some pintucks in the front, which also seem like a Victorian touch to me. My jacket is also more like something a lady would wear, a bolero-type short jacket that would be worn over a high necked blouse with a long skirt. I wish I had a men's style frock coat with long tails though! The granny boots are also more Victorian womenswear than menswear.

In 2015, I'd probably wear this ensemble with jeans, but they are so anachronistic in a Victorian outfit that I felt like I had to choose something else. I don't have any tweed trousers, so I went with my wool microcheck trousers; from a distance, they read as a tweedy grey.

I could not resist adding my magnifying glass necklace! Sure, it's a little costumey but it's so much fun. I also added a big cocktail ring with a large deep red stone.

I mentioned earlier today on Aubergine's thread that I actually had a hard time coming up with a Victorian outfit, even though the era certainly influences a lot of my everyday looks. But I think I've realized that it works best for me when I pair it with more modern and urban pieces. And not having denim to fall back on to ground the outfit is really difficult!

(handknit vest, Aqua jacket, Vince Camuto blouse, BR trousers, Dolce Vita boots).
