I'm loving Poldark too! I loved that actor in Being Human, so I was beyond excited when I saw the preview, and the series is totally surpassing my hopes. I enjoy fluffy TV as well as serious TV, likely more, lol, depending on my mood, so I'll still look into the Bilson show.

I'm sorry you get sized out too. I don't feel I'm tiny enough to need something less than a 0/xs, but clearly some retailers disagree. Hopefully sewing can solve both our problems!

I knew you were tiny, but didn't realize it was the smallest size. That is frustrating. I feel your sizing challenge. I size out things because of being so tall and curvy. In fact, I usually can't order from some of my favorite places such as Revolve, because the largest size is an 8 or 10, while I often need a 14.

I'm learning how to sew too! Just decided to do beginning this fall/winter. Will continue to knit some, but sewing is absolutely intriguing me because I want to add to my wardrobe.

HOF is soap bubbles and sugar, with a shot or two of vodka for good measure It's fun to watch, nothing serious, especially with the characters names (Lemon Breeland), the plot, etc. My husband is into Grimm, but the clothes aren't gorgeous like OUaT. My huge TV love right now is new the adaption of Poldark on PBS. So. Dreamy.

Thank you Maneera!

Keturah, I'd be comfortable sizing down, if this wasn't already the smallest size. Hmph. I get sized out of so many brands, and with the looser styles coming into fashion, it's going to be more of a problem than ever. Oh well. Trying to learn to sew instead!

Anyway, thanks so much for all of the feedback & encouragement. I think I fall more into the Yin Gamine camp too, just borrowing some softness/drape from the Yin Natural. I LOVE Ginnifer Goodwin in OUaT, especially the early seasons, so thank you! I haven't seen Hart of Dixie, but now I want to add it to my Netflix queue. And I'll pass along your instructions to Moth! hehe

Okay, I just love the softness and storybook essence of your clothes! You nail the woodland fairytale look overtime. And your colors...wow, they're so perfect on you and for you.

Okay...I have to agree on the jeans. They needed some darts. It helped position the pants more cleanly around your waist. Still, the jeans cause me issues. I agree with the others, and could see you going down a couple sizes --if you are comfortable doing so. I don't think they look terrible on you. They drown you out a bit.

The blouse is utter perfection on you. And I love the scarf and sweater. You always remind me of Rachel Bilson on Hart of Dixie, and Ginnifer Goodwin in Once Upon A Time. I still see Yin Gamine, and soft whimsy in your style. It's what I most look forward to when you post WIWs.

Please let Moth photobomb anytime!! xo

You look great. I like the first outfit a lot....the darts have definitely improved the fit of the trouser jeans, and I don't particularly mind that they are big on the thighs. The outfit still looks pretty YOU

Oh now I understand Angie! I was looking at them as trousers made out of denim (since they have a trouser-style fly, not a jeans ones), so expecting them to fall straight from the widest part of the hip, vs jeans that follow the contours. They’re definitely too loose by the latter standards! Thank you for taking the time to keep clarifying until I understood. :)

RetailGirl, I got some delicious yarn to make a couple of cowls, so I’m excited! Thanks so much for the feedback. My hip bones are pretty straight, but my bottom is curvy; you only see it when I’m wearing a body con fit though.

Astrid, I thought of you when I pulled the scarf out: you rock scarves! Your thoughts on the second outfit does make sense; since the blouse gets its waist definition from a ribbon tie in the back, it makes all of the fullness be in the back instead of the sides. But I do love peplums.

Word Lily, I have other wide legged trousers that the forum likes that are also bigger through the thighs; I bet they have the same amount of ease as this pair. I suspect the difference is that the other pairs are made of a drapey fabric whereas this one is stiff. So many factors to consider!

Thank you TG! You’re so nice! Katherine Hepburn is *always* my inspiration for wide legged trousers, so I get that vibe from these jeans, but I was beginning to think I was crazy for doing so. lol

Good lord E., look at the size of your tiny little waist!

You know I think you are absolutely gorgeous ... the style of the sleeveless blouse highlights your youthful, gamine-esque side, and the scarf and sweater really showcase your natural beauty. Lovely, lovely, lovely!

ETA - Does anyone else get a Katherine Hepburn-y vibe from the fit of the jeans?

I think (maybe I'm wrong) that the correct fit for wide-leg trousers is fitted at the waist and maybe hips, but then straight down rather than tapering? Although this probably varies some ...

The pants look too big to me too... Maybe it's also the fabric and wash contributing to that. That said, I really like the concept of the first look! Love the scarf! I really like the jeans with the second top in the side view, much more than from straight on. I think it would look better if the hem would fall more loosely around your hips, as hinted in the side view. Does that make sense?

I agree with Angie, the pants look a little big but I struggle with the same issues with pants...I'm straight hipped and flat of butt and I hate things too tight so you might think my pants were too big, too! I love the picture you attached of Claire and I'm sure, with your knitting skills, that you could make some awesome cowls. I love the look you achieved in the first picture. Also, I like your commentary as much as your pictures!

E, look at the side view. Those jeans - it terms of regular fit - are two sizes too big. They don't follow the contour of your bottom or where your thighs meet your bottom. The fabric wrinkles and stands away quite dramatically. Their "bigness" is less noticeable in the front.

Yay Gresycale! :)

Donnat, I love the top in #2 as well & have worn it in a variety of ways. I do have one pleated skirt I can try it with, although I’m not sure it’s the kind of pleats you & MG are envisioning. I’ll work on some photos! And that’s good to know re: belts…I pretty much always have a gap on the waistband, unless I’ve added darts, so I’ll have to be careful about that in future.

Beth Ann, I didn’t mean quirky features in a bad way, but thank you for the reassurances. You know, I just assumed that wide legged trousers were suppose to be wide everywhere; I think perhaps it’s the lack of fluidity in the material that’s making them look too big? I don’t know. Sadly I don’t have a water softener (like I did in Texas), and since I live in an apartment building, I can’t just add one!

Angie, I think my eye is so used to slightly too big clothes on me, unless they’re body con, that I need to re-educate it, because I genuinely don’t see any problems in the thigh area from the front. The back seems wrinklier for sure though. Lots to ponder!

Word Lily, I think you’re right; I’m used to being able to wear a full skirt paperbag style w a belt & just distribute all of extra fabric evenly. But that doesn’t really work with trousers! No wonder I never used to tuck. lol

I think belts can serve a functional role to hold up your pants, but only within a narrow range. If too oversized, the garment looks bad and bunches. There are historical eras where belts were worn well below the natural waist, (1970s come to mind, in particular) but I think the same narrow range comes in to play no matter how high or low the best is placed.

The darks work well on the waist, E. Still too much room on the thighs though - but it IS an improvement. If you're happy with the thigh fit, wear them and continue to have fun with your outfits.

It does look like the darts helped. I will be waiting for the restyle photos. I love, love, love the top in #2. Like MG said, paired with a narrow skirt or small knife pleated skirt would be killer. The colors in the first outfit, with the scarf, beautiful..... belts originally, probably are to hold pants up, but now are more of a fashion item. You don't want to show that gap between the pant and the belt.

Jenn, I hadn’t thought of the first outfit as classic. Hmmm. Lots to mull over! And yep, the waist on these was a bit big, so I just added a couple darts & photos down below. Better? Or not so much? I’m still sort of mystified by tucking into trousers, unless they’re vintage & hit my actual waist. I agree that neither look is *that* leg shortening, but I do think my legs look longer in the tucked look, which is interesting! I would think exposing the disproportionate length of my rise would make them look shorter by comparison. I’m not particularly concerned with lengthening my leg line, as I like being short (in person, people think I’m shorter than I am…I take photos with the camera at about waist level, but anyone taller than me is obviously going to see me at a different, more foreshortened angle in person…hmmm...), but I’m always interested in optical illusions. hehe

The Outlander show is quite good, filmed on location in Scotland, although I don’t like the sexual violence (which is part of the book too). I’ve seen the first 8 but don’t have cable, so have to wait until the next ones are available on Amazon! Anyway, Claire wears some truly wonderful knitwear, although apparently it’s not historically authentic. I’m attaching a photo of one of her cowls! Now I just need a tall Scotsman on my arm. ;D

Thank you Word Lily! Updos are really tricky with layered hair: a French braid might work better for you?

Lol MG! Optical illusions are surprising things! I hope you find your more saturated version; I come across a lot of too-saturated teals, so I know they’re out there. I definitely don’t have a long slim skirt & don’t think I have a matchstick pleated one, but I have a pair of relatively similar skinnies I could try. I don’t really mind having short legs though; in the past I’ve happily paired the top with my blush skinnies. I’ll go do some wardrobe playing though; thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you Angie. Maybe I did hike them too much: I’m never sure how the belt should work with trousers. I added a couple of little darts to the waistband & show photos further down the thread; is that better? They don’t feel oversized, except for in the waistband, but I’m terrible with fit issues, so will depend on your expert eye. I do wish I could grow a size or two, so that I stop being sized out of things! These are a 0.

Jackie, enjoy the soft summer palette! I love it. :D

Greyscale, they are from Express! And I do love them, so hopefully Angie approves of the dart solution (thanks for the suggestion; I implemented it right away, hehe).

I can’t pinpoint what makes the first outfit so different from my usual look either…and I can’t decide if I like the result or not.

I didn’t realise we were pretty much the same height & proportions! How fun! So are Suz & & Krishnidoux & Anne from Australia.

I had my sewing basket out anyway, so I added a couple little darts to the back of the waistband. Here a couple quick iPhone photos of the results: better? I don't think I understand how to belt trousers, lol. Should the belt not actually hold them up? This is why I only wore skirts and dresses in my early twenties. And once I started wearing trousers again, always wore the top untucked. :p

Are the pants from Express? I think I had exactly the same but in grey denim. I loved mine.

The outfit with the top tucked in and the belt makes you look tall and long legged and hourglass-y. It's a very different silhouette than I'm used to seeing on you, but I can't quite figure out what's different about it and why it gives that effect.

I think you and I are almost the same height & proportions by the way.

I do agree with Angie that the pants look a tiny bit too big, and the belt is changing how they fit. I wonder if you could put small darts in the waistband. They're oversized in a way that I like, aside from that.

I am in love with the colour combinations of your first outfit. As another recently dubbed soft summer, I'm more in tune and aware of these colours. Fantastic descriptions too; very rich.

E, I love the concept in both outfits. The scarf and pullover are a match made in heaven, and the sleeveless blouse is a very YOU blouse.

But the jeans aren't a stellar fit - unless they're hiked up too high in the first outfit? I fear though, that if you drop them to a more natural waist - the crotch point will drop too far down. A size or two two big. What do you think?

You look ridiculously tall and long-legged in the sweater outfit! I really like the teal/mallard on you as well ... I love that color, but it never seems to work for me, now I know why (I need more saturated/deep/intense).

I want to see the sleeveless top with a long slim skirt, or maybe a matchstick pleated skirt (remember those?) in the same white as the collar. Since I doubt you have any such thing, how about a pair of narrow fit trousers in a similar color to the top (not the collar) to try extending the line?

I really like both of these outfits, and I like how you've styled your hair! I really like the palette of the first look; the blue-grey with the muted bluey grey-green and the indigo is really interesting (in a good way).

(I was, just yesterday, partly inspired by your braided styles, looking for updos (for neck coolness) but the one I tried my hair was not long enough/too layered for.)

Oh, I quite like both outfits. I don't think the first outfit changes your features to be "less quirky" so much as it's just a more classic look all-around and you look classic in it. Interestingly, I don't find either of your looks to be terribly leg-shortening, although I can see how the second one might seem that way. I would never have guessed you were 5'3" from either of these photos. I'm actually less in love with the belted look because of the way the waistband of the pants pulls down out of line with the belt. I'm guessing the waist might be a little big on you?

I love the big-scarf look. I impulse-bought a wool infinity scarf in a rusty orange color from a knitter next to me at a show last winter. I wore it a lot last year and plan to do so again this year. I haven't been watching the Outlander show, but I've read the books and am wholeheartedly in favor of emulating Claire. :)

I actually thrifted these jean/trouser hybrids a few years ago, because of the complex dark greyed blue colour and lovely feel of the fabric, but at the time I couldn't figure out how to style them, so I passed them along to my mom. She's done wearing them though, and I'm interested in wide legged trousers again, so when she came to visit last month she brought them back. Win!

Last week, we had a day that started out cool and ended up quite warm, enough so that I completely changed the top half of my outfit. Since one is tucked & one untucked, I thought it'd be fun to show them side by side, and see how proportions change. For reference, I'm 5'3", and all of my length is in my torso: I'm long waisted and have a long rise (it takes a 12" rise to touch my belly button, lol). I am wearing shoes in one photo but not the other, and the shoes' sole is probably about an inch thick.

Ok! So the first outfit was actually another experiment for me; awhile back we had a fun chatty thread about Kibbe style types and forum member Sheila suggested I look at 'soft/yin natural' instead of 'soft/yin gamine,' basically to try out more drapey/flowy stuff than crisp looks. I very much enjoyed this Pinterest board, and since I use these ideas more as inspiration than rules, I'm happy to incorporate whatever appeals to my aesthetic sense. Hehe I'm also planning on knitting a couple of big cowls for fall/winter, thanks to the delicious neckwear Claire wears in Outlander, so I thought doing a trial run might be wise. Which is a long-winded way of saying, I put together pieces in a slightly different way than I normally would, and I'd love your thoughts on the result!

Since I was playing with silhouette, I stuck to my classic 'soft summer' palette and paired the moody indigo of the wide legged trouser jeans with a knit 100% silk, fitted sweater in muted, dark seagreen kind of colour; perhaps it's called mallard? (I'm trying to be more precise for Robin & Michelle.) I tucked the sweater in & added a similarly muted, medium blue-grey belt (I'm still learning how to belt trousers, but I promise those weird wrinkles in the crotch weren't noticeable in real life). Finally, I pulled out a very thin, drapey, pashmina-sized scarf that I bought in Toronto's Chinatown: it's in a very similar medium blue-ed grey tone as the belt, and has a chain pattern swirling across it in a soft navy and muted light pink colour. I tied it cowl-style, in the interests of the above-mentioned future knitting plans. Since my hair's a bit longer (suggested for soft naturals), I tried to style it as a 'medium length' cut instead of an overgrown bob, hehe. Oh, I'm wearing my Aurora flats, which I pretty much live in in the summer! ;)

By late afternoon, it'd gotten much warmer (and my hair had gotten distinctly bedraggled: eek! the harder water up here makes hair maintenance trickier), so I switched to a character-laden sleeveless silk blouse instead. This is in a darker cool grey, with a ribbon tie to add some waist definition, and has a deep rounded colour in oyster white with a little black button & ribbon where the collar meets in the front. The back yoke has three matching buttons, although you can't see those. It's long enough to just cover the leg break of the trousers, but looking at the photos side by side, I don't think that lengthens my leg line as much as tucking in did. Thoughts? (And there's Moth, with a drive-by photo bombing, hehe. That bottom square of my bookcase is now left clear of books, so that she has a little cat tunnel/cubby.)

All suggestions, observations, criticisms, etc. are welcome as always! Looking at these photos, I was surprised that the sweater/scarf outfit somehow made my face seem a bit less quirky compared to the blouse, if that makes sense (I don't have those classic All American cheerleader features, like my mother & sister do). Do you see that too, or am I crazy? I find how much we can change the perception of our physical sleeves by changing our clothes fascinating & I have a thick skin, so discuss away!
