After having it bleached to its whitest point (which originally took two separate bleachings), then toned to get any remaining yellow out, I have gone back in every four weeks like clockwork to get the roots done. I also have the whole head toned each time. I think that is what gives it the pearly quality you mentioned. I also wash with a purple shampoo, which keeps the brassiness away. In hope that helps.
