Angie, thanks for your kind words! I do think the uniform I’ve been working with suits me both practically and aesthetically. I am glad it is coming through. I would like to branch out to other silhouettes but I am finding that figuring out how to make my wardrobe support just that one uniform takes all my focus as a first step.

Oh, thank you all for your kind comments! What a lovely thing to wake up to this morning.

I’m very grateful for the scarf appreciation and also that you all are seeing a consistent style coming through. Also happy that the last outfit that I had identified as my favorite also stands out to you all - I’m glad to know that I can recognize when things are working.

Karen13, you are motivating me to actually sit down and polish my boots, thank you for sharing what a difference this has made for you!

ETA: forgot to answer your question about photos. YES, that definitely helps me up my game, particularly with accessories. And the feedback from other forum members really helps. I have played around with seasonal capsule wardrobes in the past but I feel that I am sticking with it and also going deeper with analysis this time.

And Sisi I am relieved to know I am not the only button procrastinator!

I was really eager to see this suite of photos. I especially love the way you pictured the outfits for illustration purposes and then wore it for the visual. That sweater in number 1 is beautiful. It looks cozy and lush in the photos. My favorite, of course, is number 9. It looks intentional and you SHINE.

I like-like-like your outfits ! I cannot pick a favorite. Unfortunately # 6 and 9 look very dark on my screen and I cannot see the details but I can imagine how well they look in reality. I hear you on the sweater-on- sweater issue. I never layer two sweaters because that would make me feel bundled up. If I wear a woolen cardigan I always wear something thinner under it (cotton or silk tops). And you made me laugh with the story of the missing button! I have a raincoat that I have been wearing all Autumn despite a missing button but I have not managed yet to get me to sew it. Glad to know I am in good company! :)

I love 8/9 - the color and the scarf are fantastic. Plus I am really warming to navy/black combos. I really like the burgundy sweater with the black and white. Like The Cat, I'd like to see more of the purple sweater - how about over a t or tank as your top most piece? With either of these scarves?

Shank buttons on the cardi will hang like that unless you button them. I had the same issue with my side button pants. If it bothers you, you will need to replace them again with flat buttons.

As I upgraded a lot of footwear last year, I bought cream polish in the correct color for each of my new boots. It is amazing what a difference an cream conditioner and polish make. I found a B&M shoe repair that stocks a wide range so I pay a bit more but know it matches.

I like all your outfits - do you find the knowledge they will be photographed makes you up your game? I do this, even if I don't show them to anyone, and see things in the picture that I don't in the mirror.

Well, thank you all for the enabling re: the scarf! I still love that winter village scarf but I am also enjoying having more than one option that really expresses the vibe of this capsule.

Rachylou, thanks for the appreciation of blues and grays, and also for the comment about my hair. I have been defaulting to putting it up bc I didn’t love my last haircut so I’m sort of heartened to think that it might come across as deliberate.

Toban, yes I definitely gravitate to the long over lean look. Re: softness vs. structure, that is an interesting thought. The outfit I liked best last week was all knit, with a scarf (so, lots of softness), but also was the least flowy of any of my looks. When I get those buttons on the gray cardi sorted out, I will try it with the black knit, and also with a woven top, and see how each of those feel to me.

Joy, yes, there’s something to be said for just falling for something! And when it’s a scarf, the space commitment is low and it always fits!

The Cat, thanks! I do like these colors a lot. I am not sure I can combine the purple top with the blue cardi (the cardi might be too fitted, especially in the arms) but I will try it!

Your scarves are lovely and the blue bird print scarf is so pretty. I never hesitate to buy another scarf or necklace, they add so much interest to basic clothes.

I see a 'uniform' coming through that suits you very well, slim fitting pants and a flowy sweater or top. You mention a couple times where you weren't sure it was quite working. I wonder if the doubling up of a cardigan with soft top might be too much 'softness' and needing structure somewhere? Perhaps a necklace instead of scarf? A more fitted top under the cardigan? Or a more fitted topper over a flowy top? Just a thought.

Here’s a recap of my second week of outfits featuring my “deep winter” capsule.

I opted to assemble a collection of items that fits my color palette for this season up front, but since many people in the 30x30 challenge are building their capsules as they go I thought it would be interesting to look at how many items I added each week.

Week 1: 4 bottoms, 4 tops, 6 toppers, 4 shoes for 18 items overall.

Week 2: added 2 bottoms, 2 tops, 3 toppers, 2 shoes for 27 items overall.

This seems quite similar to what those who are building their capsules as they go have found. Interesting!

On to the outfits!

1: medium-wash skinny jeans, gray/white striped popover, blue-gray cardi, gray tall boots.

Very glad to have my gray tall boots back from the cobbler! They do need to be conditioned and polished. Despite my style resolution to keep on top of this sort of thing I do not seem to have made time for it yet. Disappointed in myself for that!

2-3: black ponte leggings, white tuxedo popover, burgundy long cardi, black tall boots.

Happy with this look. I have worn it before but I do not mind repeating it.

4-5: gray skinny jeans, purple layering sweater, gray long cardi, cognac riding boots.

Blah. I have mentioned before that these layering sweaters used to be a staple for me but I am feeling uninspired by them lately. It may be that with my weight gain they feel bulky when layered under another sweater in a way that they didn’t used to do. I am also thinking about the fact that I used to be more into colored bottoms, but now with my turn towards simple, neutral bottoms I may rely more on interest and pattern in the top half of my outfit that these are not providing. I am genuinely befuddled by this question. I’m not sure if I’m genuinely moving away from this look, or if I’m just telling myself I’m over it as a kind of psychological defense against acknowledging the weight gain.

The other trouble with this outfit is the cardigan. I’ve just replaced the buttons on it (it was previously missing several, and I have to confess that I wore it for like a year just ignoring the missing buttons!) but I am not happy with the job I did. The thread I used doesn’t match the sweater very well, and I don’t like the way the buttons sag downwards (not sure if I just need to use thicker yarn, or need buttons without a shank). Also it turns out that the top buttonhole is bigger than the others — may be partly deliberate and partly stretched out but in any case I need to address that issue. Sigh. I was so proud of myself for making progress with that style resolution but now it’s back to the drawing board!

6-7: medium-wash skinny jeans, white popover, ivory cable-knit cardi, cognac riding boots, aqua/lavender paisley silk scarf

The happiness factor of the top half of this outfit is high, but I feel really dumpy in these jeans, which brings things down considerably.

ETA: I just realized that the "detail" photo shows the white long-sleeve tee that proved to be too flimsy and see-through (see comments below). I switched to my trusty pintucked woven popover after about 10 minutes. The white tee will be returned!

8-9: navy skirt leggings, black knit, medium-blue cardi, black ankle boot, blue bird-print scarf

I am shamelessly borrowing Sterling’s navy and black color combo for this one! I am not sure if the navy is distinct enough from the black to look intentional, but nevertheless I was very happy in this outfit. Comfortable, everything fits well, and I really enjoy the tonal blues. My favorite outfit of the week.

The black knit top is NEW. I was very happy to move the other black knit I have been complaining about to the donation bag. This one is both more comfortable and more flattering. Sadly, the white version of this top did not work out. It was too see-through. But the fabrication is ok in black.

I feel a bit sheepish showing you all the scarf. It is also new. It popped up on Ebay and I realized it would fit my color scheme well and I pounced. I worry that it is an example of buying more of what’s easy for me to find rather than seeking out harder to find/fit items that actually fill wardrobe holes. On the other hand, I am REALLY happy with this piece. The bird print is very much up my alley, the blue is a good color for me, and I like the blue/black/cobalt color scheme a lot. I wore it all weekend and found that the more I wore it, the more I loved it. So. There’s my rationalization!

As always, any comments and suggestions are most welcome. Thank you for reading!
