Thanks for the kind words, jussie! I have been enjoying the maximal scarf+necklace look lately but I haven’t played around to much with layering necklaces. I will try that next week!

Sterling, thanks for popping back in! Your weekend plans sound divine in terms of both activity and wardrobe. We ran out of time to get to the bead store during the week but my daughter is VERY keen to go so we will do so today. I am excited to experiment with the earrings and will definitely keep you posted!

I have been thinking about the weekend dressing conundrum. I think I want:
*black or navy bottoms that are SOFT. (This explains why the merino leggings I wear to and from the gym on weekday mornings won’t fit the bill — they’re not quite soft enough, and I don’t feel “dressed” in the gray and medium purple colors.)
*Less layering on top (vs. my weekday formula of cardi over blouse or knit). This is why I am so drawn to wearing that gray floral sweatshirt over and over. Pullovers are tricky for me, but it might be worth seeking out one or two more options.
*A bit of simple jewelry to “finish” the outfit. Pearl studs with a sweatshirt. Taking a moment to put on my rings. I need to do a bit more experimenting to find the right formulas but am on the trail I think.

May we all have cozy and restorative weekends!

Sarah -- It is the start of the weekend here. My plans for today are soft, stretchy, light weight garments. "Lounging clothes." I have no outside errands. Sometimes that just feels so right. I am coming to the same conclusion that at least one day of each weekend is totally lounging wear.

Let me know what you decide about the earrings.

Hi there I'm new to the forum. I like your deep winter capsule, I often wear jeans, button up shirt and and open cardi with a couple of layered necklaces.
I especially like the grey cardi, burgundy cardi and bergundy boots.
Yes I agree the hang of the earrings is a little unusual, however they're "just flattering enough". The fair isle sweater is a bit small, but I think the funky shoes and blue socks you've pared it with somehow make it work; I don't know why!
Cheers
I think the shirt lengths are all fine, btw.
Cheers

Zaeobi, that is a great idea to think more about *why* I choose one pair of boots over another. I think I am wearing the cognac boots a lot because I like how they "warm up" outfits composed mostly of cool colors, I like that warm-cool contrast. You have stimulated me to think more about what other options in my boot capsule might do. Thank you! Today for example I decided I wanted to go for a sleek look so I wore my tall black boots (with black ponte leggings). I do have a pair of gray boots, I just got them back from the cobbler (one had a broken zipper) so you'll be seeing them a lot going forward.

karen13, great tips, thank you!

kkards, I'm not sure! There is no tag. It's definitely vintage, but does not look handmade, and feels like Shetland wool. I never had a fair isle sweater growing up! I love them, the complicated color schemes really fascinate me.

I really like all of these looks. If I had such awesome cognac boots, I'd wear them all the time. And gorgeous scarves!

Sad the fair isle sweater is itchy and uncomfortable because it looks great. I have had some success with blocking wool sweaters, soaking them and stretching them firmly in both directions and drying flat. Keep stretching them as they dry. Wool fibers have little "hooks" on them - it is what makes them itchy and causes them to shrink a bit when they are agitated by hooking on to themselves. Also try adding bit of hair conditioner (cheap is fine) to the soak water - it reduces the itchiness.

Those riding boots are lovely - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! But no lol, if you're looking to use your other boots more, maybe take a step back & think about why you might be reaching for these boots more? Is it something about the length? Personally I think it's a good bridging piece between all of your outfits, & isn't too dark for your colouring either. That said, dove grey could also look good on you.

I'm loving the ring as a bridging piece, too. You look light & pretty, but still winter appropriate to my eye

Toban, thanks for the appreciation for this capsule's color palette. I agree, I'm drawn to softer, more casual looks this month too...even though I really didn't attend any parties over the holidays! It's nice to cocoon this time of year.

La Pedestrienne, ah, that's a good idea about keeping the earrings for Halloween. I agree that it's ok to be more relaxed on weekends, although I'm afraid my household is nowhere near as industrious as yours! :-)

Sterling, THANK YOU for your kind comments. I like your idea about the earrings too. My daughter and I are hoping to make it to the bead store today so I will look for some findings that could make the wings hang a bit shorter. I do think that is part of the problem.

Yes, the weekend thing is so interesting to ponder. I am finding that it's not that I feel that I need to impress you all, but I do want to feel like I've "gotten dressed" on the weekends, rather than staying in pajamas or throwing on sloppy sweats. It's so funny, since I work from home. Why not just wear the same sorts of clothing that I wear during the week? But I don't want to. I want something softer, something stretchy. I may as well accept that, and organize my wardrobe to support it, rather than fighting it and clinging to some preconceived notion of what I "should" wear.

FashIntern, yes, those boots have proved themselves many times over already! I feel like I like them more the more I wear them -- sure sign of a good buy.

Windchime, thank you, I like the texture of that cardigan too! I am finding that I really like textured knits. I am going to make it a priority to look for them in the future.

Katerina, the comment that you love the way I incorporate scarves is VERY high praise coming from you! I appreciate it!

First, let me say you look absolutely fabulous!! As Toban observed, your color palette is lovely. I would add it is soothing to my eye.

I had a hard time seeing your ring, but I agree abalone is so lovely to look at. I never before considered it's resemblance to the Northern Lights. Now I will forever link this material to the Northern Lights.

Congratulations on the your "new" cashmere sweater. I am so glad it fills that hole for you. I personally love the sweater pattern and how beautiful it is coordinated with scarfs. I am guessing I am going to be buying a lot of scarfs this month ....

I studied the earrings long and hard. I went back and forth about them. Is it possible that they would work for you if they hung a little higher? It might the length that is throwing the eye off.

Numbers 5/6 are my absolute favorite because of the colors and silhouette. However, your description of how you view this outfit clinched it for me. I want garments that are as soft as a cloud.

Cognac riding boots for the WIN.

I'm wondering about this weekend thing. Several of the Challenge participants (including myself) just didn't bother getting dressed this weekend. I'm not sure if it was the weather or the dark sky that deflated my ambition. I had to force myself to change out of pajamas on Sunday. And I did that just so I could report to the Forum that I got dressed. I wonder if this is the norm for me??? Something else to consider as part of the Challenge.

Don't worry about the weekends -- I never take pics of my weekend wear, because I inevitably end up in either my grungiest chore clothes or gear. When DH and I are both home, we're either playing outside or working on the house. Of course, my weekday clothes are about the level of refinement that most people aim for on the weekends, so...

The earrings look like wings to me. They do have a bit of a goth vibe -- not sure putting them on a necklace will change that. But they might look like two halves of a heart when they're next to each other? I'd probably just save them for Halloween and feel very proud of myself for having a cool, subtly-festive accessory (I'm desperate for a few of those!).

Thanks for the photos. What a pretty color palette. The abalone ring does have all the colors. How beautiful. January is a more casual month, esp after all the holiday parties in December. No wonder we’re reaching for jeans and lounge wear. Yesterday was a PJ’s day for me.

Here are the first few outfits from my “deep winter” capsule, a collection of 40-45 items that I’ll be wearing from now through mid-March.

1-2: medium-wash skinny jeans, white popover shirt, light blue-gray cardi, winter village scarf, cognac riding boots

The proportions here aren’t quite ideal, I think. It would be better if the shirt were longer. This shirt is always shorter than I expect it to be! (Not that it has shrunk, just that my brain hasn't accurately recorded its actual length.)

I also have to say something about this cardigan, which is a vintage cashmere piece that I recently scored for $8 (!) on Poshmark. Waaaaay back in high school, I thrifted a vintage cropped light blue cardigan. It was really pretty — shell buttons, pointelle knit, grosgrain trim at the placket. I gave it away a couple of years ago as the condition was not great (it was discolored in spots and the cuffs were fraying in a way that I didn’t think I could fix) — I hadn’t worn it in years but just hadn’t been able to let go of it. When I received this sweater, it seemed really familiar. At first I couldn’t pinpoint why, then I realized that the color and the buttons and something about the texture of the knit reminded me of my old thrifted blue vintage sweater. I feel like my old friend has come back to me! Anyway I am very happy about this, and now I’m fantasizing about finding a new version of the saffron-orange Madras plaid skirt that I used to wear with the first iteration of the blue sweater.

3: Medium-wash straight jeans, vintage fair isle pullover, tan clogs

Y’all, I can make this look ok in a photo but this sweater is too small. It rides up, it itches (didn’t used to b/c it wasn’t so tight). Not fab at all. I’m removing this to a holding zone; if I lose a few pounds anytime soon I’ll revisit.

4: Wing-shaped earrings I wore with the above outfit.

I included these earrings in the capsule because I bought them in Sweden, capsule is inspired by northern landscapes, etc. But…I think they’re kind of weird. Just the shape of them is odd. Right? I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe they are a little too Witchy Woman for my style? I think I might try to make them into a necklace. What say you all?

5-6: Black ponte leggings, tuxedo-pleat popover, gray cardi, cognac riding boots.

I can’t capture in pictures the way this outfit hangs in person but this cardi is wonderful. It’s soft as a cloud, sleek, and adds some subtle waist shaping (to my largely waist-less torso, lol) and I just find it SO flattering.

Also, this outfit is another illustration of how I’m fine with all neutrals as long as I can mix like 4 of them and have some color in my accessories.

7-8: Black skirt leggings, gray/white striped popover, long burgundy cardi, and…cognac riding boots.

Y’all I tried to wear different footwear here but I just couldn’t do it! Assignment for this next week: give some love to my other boots!

Also I think this top is a bit too long, I prefer the skirted leggings with a shorter top (otherwise the skirt part kind of gets “lost”.) Next time, I’ll swap the tops in this outfit and the first one!

Other observations/lessons:

-See that abalone ring in the first outfit? I realized that, as odd as it may sound, abalone is the perfect material for jewelry for this capsule. Swirls of pink, green, blue…it’s like wearing the Northern Lights! I am hoping to figure out how to fix the ring pictured here (one side of the shank has become detached) and also hope to source a couple more abalone pieces, maybe a pair of earrings and a pendant.

-No pictures from the weekend because I didn’t wear anything that really amounted to a deliberate “outfit.” Blah. Two possible ways to fix this:

(1) I need (more) “elevated loungewear,” i.e., something comfy enough for me to wear for a cozy weekend day spent mostly at home BUT nice enough to keep on for grocery shopping/errands, and that feels like a put-together outfit.

(2) I need jeans I am actually excited to put on. Argh. ARGH. Easier said than done, of course.
