Adriana, you must have driven through some very interesting country. Years ago I read a book called “Blue Highways.” It was about a road trip around the US, entirely on side roads. I think I may need to reread it, as my husband’s retirement looms.

I didn't know you live in Nevada. In october 2017 we drove from Death Valley through Nevada to Denver (to fly home). No interstates. I would love to do it again.

Janet, we drove my old Subaru to Minnesota a couple years ago. Here it is in the Badlands, and when we had a flat tire just over the Minnesota border. We had so much fun seeing stopping wherever we wanted, and seeing everything. Now my son’s GF enjoys tootling around in it. Alaska will be fun to force yourself to go to.

Adriana, thank you. You’ve been to the Great Basin NP? Now I’m ashamed of myself. I’ve lived in this state for 25 years, and I’ve never been there. Nevada is almost nothing but open spaces!

Jaileen, yes in a tent and when I say "wild" I mean just put your tent where you want, not on a campsite. Must be allowed of course. Now I think in english it is called backcountry camping. And I also have been in Great Basin! We pack our tent and stuff in a big bag on the plane from Europe. Your country and nature is breathtaking. I love the open spaces.

Ah, I only have Alaska left. I've checked a bunch of national parks off my list though.

My 49th state was a sort of random, out-of-the-way one too -- Iowa! And as chance had it, I learned of RAGBRAI, the big bicycle ride across Iowa a few years ago, so that was my Iowa experience -- a week of riding across the state from the western border to the eastern, 500+ miles.

I drove through ND on my big teardrop trailer tour almost 8 years ago. That trip definitely enabled me to visit a lot of states I had never had opportunity to visit before (the "flyover states" in particular) -- it was a total blast, and I enjoyed every single one of those states!

Karen, I will report back, if I am able to convince my husband to rent one. Re buying one, I think he’s reluctant because of our pack of wild dogs. He thinks they might keep us awake every night, barking at everything. The other alternative is boarding them every time we went out.

Janet, are you saying you just have Alaska left, or that you just have the NPs and landmarks in Alaska left? A few years ago, I made it to my 50th state. It wasn’t Alaska or Hawaii, but it was out of the way - North Dakota! We were visiting our son in St Paul, and I realized Fargo was only 246 miles away. Everyone was so nice and said yes, let’s drive to North Dakota today. :)

My oldest brother has been to all 50 states, and it now “collecting” major league baseball parks. Yes, we’re kind of an eccentric family,

LOL, I have a goal of visiting all the national parks, and as many national monuments as possible. I've lost count, but I've been to quite a few! And only one state of the US left to go, but it's a biggie -- Alaska!

Please report back on any RV rental experiences. I want to do that too. DH always lusts after the super contained 4WD versions on a regular van chassis that can go everywhere. Now that we are empty nest, I want to rent one and see how comfortable it is.

We rented a spacious trailer for a Yellowstone/Teton road trip about 10 years ago (from a local place) and it was so fun. Barely small enough to tow with out 4Runner - maybe 22 feet. We could leave it at our campsite and drive everywhere. Rented the same one 4 years later and it had not held up well.

Janet, you’ve been to Great Basin NP? Practically no one has been there! You’re like that Johnny Cash song, “I’ve been everywhere”! :)

We were thinking of renting a van conversion. We started looking into them a few years ago. We considered getting one, but they’re pricey. If we really used it, that wouldn’t be so bad, but we’re afraid it might languish on the driveway, like so many RVs.

Oh, that sounds like a great plan. Great Basin is lovely and sparsely visited. I only got to spend a short day there but it was such a refreshing change from the rest of Nevada! It was fall so I got to experience changing leaves and snow on the ground in the high elevations — love that! I did have to leave my little teardrop trailer in the visitor center parking lot to drive the scenic road up the mountain, so I’m not sure whether RV’s can go up there, or just trailers are prohibited.

Sorry to continue a thread jack of sorts. I bet you and I could have some great travel/National Park conversations!

Janet, I’m still working on my husband re an RV. We’ve been talking about it for years. I’d also like to go out the Loneliest Road in America (Hwy 50) and see Great Basin NP. But not camp. There aren’t any places to stay, so we’d have to go in an RV.

Adriana, thank you. Does camping wild mean in a tent? Growing up, that’s what we did, tent camping. In the Sierra Nevada, back in the day, it also meant camping in the rain. :(

Bonnie, I was really glad we went. I think we went about as late as I could possibly stand it. 78 was warm, but doable. Today and tomorrow, the forecast is in the 90s. Already.

Jane, thank you. The desert is gorgeous - the colors, the patterns, the landforms - all of it.

Brooklyn, my husband made our reservations about two weeks ago. The place where we stayed was nicer than I expected. Our room had a view of a pond and the mountains beyond.

Suntiger, thank you. I got the owl necklace from Etsy with some Christmas money.

Janet, I’ve camped, but don’t want to do it anymore. My husband and I are negotiating a possble trip to the landmarks/parks in southern Utah. To avoid camping, I want to rent a small RV.

Torontogirl, thank you. My husband should be fully retired sometime this year. Our lives changed most when our son graduated from college. He has lived in many interesting places, and we have tried to visit him wherever he’s been.

You're bringing back great memories, Janet! I once camped a couple of nights in DV, but the second night brought torrential rain and winds, and I was coming down with a cold, so I was miserable. The next morning I broke camp and headed out to find a room. The accommodations in the park were full, so I ended up with a motel room in Beatty. It was still great fun. Another time I stayed up in the mountains in the lodge at Panamint Springs, and on another occasion, I stayed at the Amargosa Opera House -- that place was a trip! I think it's haunted.

Brooklyn, there are a couple of vintage resorts near Furnace Creek, in the park (A on map). They looked very charming from the outside. They were full, unfortunately. There are campsites in the park. They were full, too. We stayed outside the park, in an inn/casino (B on map), and our room was fine.

Karen, Thanksgiving in DV must have been wonderful! I would have loved to see wildflowers. But our neighbors said when they saw them, DV was absolutely packed with people. I’m not fond of crowds, so maybe it was a blessing.

Janet - How fun! We stayed a few nights at Death Valley about 4 years ago for Thanksgiving. It left me wanting to return for the bloom.

Brooklyn - We stayed at the Inn at Furnace Creek - I think they have renamed it the Inn at the Oasis. It is the historic 1920s hotel. It looks like there have been renovations and some new building since - when we were there it was comfortable and nice, but quite simple - but you aren't in a National Park to with TV or use the Internet. The weather was lovely in late November. I am not hot weather person, so can't imagine going any time other than late Fall or early Spring.

JAileen, how fantastic! Where do you stay in Death Valley? Are there hotels or do you have to camp (we are contemplating a visit). Looks awesome.

And sounds like Furnace Creek is aptly named

Anna, definitely worthwhile. I guess people do visit in summer, but it gets over 120F at Furnace Creek where the visitors center is.

Bijou, funny you should say that - the canyon’s nickname is Star Wars Canyon!

Joy, the weather was perfect. Earlier they had some flooding, and later it’ll start to heat up.

Rachy, we saw the burros in Beatty. The baby was so fuzzy.

Jenni, thank you.

Chris, my hat is a Tilley. They sell them at REI. They come in actual sizes rather than SML.

Sterling, thank you.

Janet, I bet you have some great photos from DV. My husband had a long lens and his plane pics were really great. They show their helmets and also the squadron numbers. He said it was from Lemoore. There were guys who spent the whole week just waiting for the planes to zoom by.

Joyce, thank you.

Carla, this trip was like our bird trips. I took nicer shoes (cute sneakers) and tops for dinner, but the place was so casual that I never wore them.

Kkards, thank you. What does the borax do? Our area has boron, and certain parts of town can’t grow conifers successfully for that reason.

Delurked, thank you.

Xtabay, thank you. The inn/casino where we stayed was kind of funky. So to answer your question, I have no idea. There was a lot of statuary around the property.

Anchie, we have 30 degree swings where I live, so 40 wasn’t that much more. The key is layering, of course. I felt a lot better when I rolled up my pants legs.

Angie, thank you. The southern part of the state has wild burros, and the northern part has wild horses. The burros were from miners, and the horses were originally from the Spanish conquistadors. The babies are adorable, but don’t get between them and their mamas!

Janet, you're a cutie patootie and wear hats with the best of them. How outdoorsy adorable are you in #3! And the donkeys are sweeties. I want a donkey.
