Thanks, ladies, for all the kind compliments. You are such a great group of gals and I'm so glad I joined this community!

CocoLion, my little photo-bomber is Dash. One of my two rescue dachshunds. Sometimes his "brother-in-fur," Oscar, joins in on the photobombing action. They get impatient for their walk when shooting photos (they get walked right after the photos are shot, usually). Having dachshunds turns totally normal people into doxie fanatics. I have all sorts of doxie accessories throughout my apartment since I first adopted Dash over a decade ago (bookends, doorstops. I even have a leather footstool shaped like a dachshund).

Dash was even "internet famous" for awhile when I worked at Zappos (it totally went to his head, the lil primadonna!). Appearing in both shopping cart reminder emails and in the 404 Error page when my team launched the new website several years back (I attached a pic).

They are little characters for sure and are my furry children! I love that Vienna welcomes them everywhere since dachshunds seem to believe they deserve to be the center of attention at all times! (ours are spoiled rotten).

Shiny, I, too have a 28 inch inseam (measuring from crotch to floor). So I actually don't have short legs proportionally. When applying the golden ratio to my vertical proportions I'm off by about 2 inches in the distance from my true waist to the bottom of my hip/butt --so I have more of an X shape inverted triangle, esp. when viewed from the back, because the span from my true waist to crotch slopes very gradually and is just a little longer than it should be. This has a tendency to make it look like I'm a bit shorter in the leg, when in reality I'm not (and makes it so that certain models of lowrise jeans exaggerate the effect and make it so I run the risk of "plumber's crack" if I'm not careful.

So I tend to wear a lot of cropped jackets and sweaters (or those that hit at my true waist) to counteract the effect and make my lower body overall look a bit taller. I should say that those cuts are the most flattering on me, proportionally speaking. Sometimes I just ignore that fact and wear something that isn't ideal for my proportions anyway simply because I really like it.

I love this outfit. I think that the length of the dress is perfect on you and helps offset the drop waist vertical seam and the grey sweater brings the eye up and balancing the whole look out. That's a great thrift score.

I predict you are in edgy fashion territory! Because every week when I watch Downton Abby I keep thinking drop waist dresses are going to come back in style soon. So there you go - a thrifted piece that's ahead of the trends. You heard it hear first... :-)

Regarding the petite aspect, what shortens the legs IMO isn't a drop waist per se, it's a drop waist that is not scaled for a petite body. This applies to just about any fashion, honestly. Of course YMMV and maybe you have proportionately short legs -- which you would have even if you suddenly became 10 inches taller but with all the same proportions.

At a 28 inch inseam I always thought I had short legs; didn't help my siblings all teased me and said I did. But at 5'0 my legs are actually in proportion for my height, if you consider golden ratio. Discovering that was a real eye opener for me. In comparison models tend to have proportionately longer legs for their height, but if I compare myself to the average woman of any height, my legs are just fine. Not too long, but not too short either.

Knowing I'm actually fairly proportionate in vertical proportions has shifted my attitude towards a lot of fashions I thought I couldn't wear. As long as it's scaled to a petite frame, it might actually work. The devil is in that one little -- but crucial -- detail!

This same dress on you might not work in a regular, but it's petite, so it works. And from the photos we can't tell what your actual height is. You could be 5'10.

This dress looks great on you. This is a great example of how one can wear a "don't" if the details are constructed just so. Here, the drop waist seam is at a great place for you -- just perfect. A higher seam might not work at all, nor would a lower seam.

Now, onto other important things: I'm just noticing your dachl details -- the doorstop and the live one! So cute! I lived in Vienna years ago and dachls were welcome everywhere, in department stores, the street car, cafes.

I was really enjoying yesterday's thread about comfort zones when it comes to fashion. I mentioned that I like to regularly push myself outside my "zone" (in life, work and fashion!) as a means of learning and evolving.

One style that is way outside my comfort zone is drop waist dresses.

When you're petite and have short legs, anything that actually visually lowers the waist tends to make you and your legs look even shorter. So drop-waist dresses and I don't talk much. I have one vintage Miu Miu drop waist shirtdress that I haven't worn in forever and am still trying to decide whether I should sell it.

But I digress... last Sunday at the thrift store I came across a couple of pieces that were definitely outside my zone but had things about them that I found appealing. One of them was this Juicy Couture drop waist tank dress with a double ruffle hem and vertical chain pattern in gray and black. I normally don't care for Juicy's stuff. It skews somewhat childish/girly for my tastes, usually.

I did, however, really like the simple style, chain pattern and color quite a bit. It was also a comfy thick modal material and it was a petite size. So it hit at a really nice spot on my leg (even if it did visually put my waist at my hips). So I know both ruffle hems combined with dropped waist --fashion disaster for petites! I decided to take a chance anyway.

So, for a whopping $10 I bought it. Comfort zone be-damned!

I did some subtle pattern mixing with it (just the striped b&w scarf and the stripey lucite gray/white/black vintage earrings) and topped it with my patent leather cropped moto jacket. I waffled on whether to go with the ankle boots or knee high pointy toe patent ones. In the end I actually really liked the casual "flower pot" effect of these wide-ankle-opening Rachel Comey ankle boots over the dressier feel of the knee high boots.

So, actually, as it turns out, my comfort zone expanded a bit because:

the outfit was super comfortable so I felt pretty good in it

I think the strong vertical pattern combined with the cropped jacket and the matching tights/boots did a pretty okay job of counteracting the leg-shortening effect of a drop waist ruffle hem.

So take that, Comfort Zone! You don't rule me!

What do you guys think? Did I manage to counteract the leg-shortening effect successfully or did it just feel that way to me?

Newsboy hat: Brixton Brook (via Zappos)
Cropped cashmere cardigan: Vince (via ebay)
B&W striped scarf: Thrifted
Bag: Marc Jacobs (via ebay)
Boots: Rachel Comey Mars boots (via ebay)
Patent leather cropped moto jacket: Truth & Pride (via Nordstrom Rack)
Vintage lucite earrings: Lea Stein (via estate buyout)
