Kiwigal- I'm certain the Guardian saw my awesome Frumpy Frizzle look and then created that video!

I like the idea of an unbuttoned sweater also. It's a more relaxed and open look. Probably more friendly and warm? It's definitely bad if the shrink looks uptight and buttoned up! I will try to remember this! (I will have to find that balance of authority and warmth, always a fine line, and a slightly different one for adults and children).

Alana, I'm glad you are learning from what I post. I am also learning from the wonderful feedback and that has made taking some risks, making myself vulnerable and exposing myself in these photos, etc. worthwhile.

I love your scarf Staysfit and you look awesome in those jeans. I like outfit one very much - I think it might be better with the cardigan unbuttoned but I am one of those people that subconsciously button up cardigans without realising it....

A couple of people mentioned the turtle neck being dated - and I probably agreed. Then I watched "The Guardian" What to Wear fashion segment - you are actually cutting edge. So there you go.

I'm pretty certain the problem with the second outfit is the skirt. I have a feeling it will soon meet its demise - in my closet that is. I believe in a second life for garments that aren't worn out.

Gigi, your skirt pic is so much nicer than mine, and it reminds me more of my favorite Kate look above, than my skirt which is fairly stiff but thin corduroy. I thing the drape of my skirt is funny.

Marley, all good points. I didn't end up wearing my sweater and scarf this way all day. I did undo the buttons and loosen the scarf. It was actually freezing cold in the morning when I took the pic! Maybe I will wear a higher contrast level today and post it.

I love the first outfit on you ! I happen to like the skirt but that's because that shape works for me. I think it's unfortunately just short enough and with the panels too that it looks a bit twee. Maybe it could work with tall boots in a similar shade.

Oh My Gosh - Ms. Frizzle! Hahahahaha!

Ok - as for your outfits:
1) I'd unbutton the cardigan (wearing a top underneath it of course!) I think that would give it a more fluid (current) look to the outfit. Also, the scarf is soooo cute! I'd like to see it tied so that it is less constricting looking around your neck. I want to see some fluidity in the scarf, rather than it just sitting there - KWIM? Also, would love to see (and I know, I've mentioned this before!) a higher contrast level between your toppers and your hair/skin/eyes, etc. - I'm just curious to see how that looks on you.

2) Yes - say goodbye to the skirt - its just wrong for you - mainly because you are so uncomfortable in it! (and I think it's too short) I'd say goodbye to the turtleneck too - its dated and I think the color washes you out. I'd save the green cardigan for spring. Love the shoes!

I think that the color of the sweater in the second outfit is part of the problem. I do think that the ribbed turtleneck is also kind of dated.

As far as the skirt, I don't think that it is dated. In fact, I thought you had bought it new. Ralph Lauren has a very similar one in the stores now: http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....8;Category.

Ironkurtin, The best I've done with volume on top so far is when I wear a fluid top with a pencil skirt. I have tried some Eileen Fisher looks but they didn't seem right. Not sure what else to look at but I'm open to suggestions.

You know, you have a fabulous slim figure and such a glam long neck. I would love to see you play more with volume up top, because you have an ideal figure to anchor it. One thing about having a long neck though is that necklines can be tricky in terms of how they emphasize or flatter it. That's one reason why I really like the scarf, because it frames your face and seems proportional. (I have a stumpy neck, and that scarf would drown me. So wear it in good health!)

I think you identified the skirt problem -- it's not the best shape for your figure. Compare to your new leather skirt, which is more elongated but still gives you curves .
The shoes look like winners and it's huge that they are comfy. Build more outfits from the ground up!

Firecracker, I love turtlenecks, but you are right, this one is so dated and wrong. I wore one today with both a scarf and necklace, ( I don't think the necklace is visible in my posted picture.). I like the idea of trying a pencil skirt with a turtleneck. I haven't done that before and I think I might try it, but not with this turtle neck. This one is probably going into the purge pile!

Alaskagirl, I Iike the idea of a chunkier knit turtle neck also. I don't have any, but I often love the Ralph Lauren looks, and debate whether to purchase something from his line. I think pic two could be one of my fantasy me pics! I have also been looking at more updated turtleneck silhouettes, and am considering this one from Equipment or this one from Vince.

I agree that the turtleneck isn't very current looking, and it looks very high in the neck. The color is fine but otherwise it seems a little dated. The skirt might be salvageable - worn with high boots and tights and a plaid blouse or hacking jacket - very preppy horse riding, if you know what I mean - but then again, I'm not sure that the color of the skirt is doing you any favors; even though it's not near your face it's a very warm color and doesn't really go with your skin tone. If you wanted something in the brown family I think a tan or a chocolate brown would be better.

I agree that the cool mint of the second cardigan and the warm camel of the skirt clash a bit. A forest or pine green would be lovely.

Your shoe scarf is adorable, btw!

I don't mean to be harsh, but in the second outfit the skirt looks kind of puckery along the seams. The turtleneck, skirt and belt are kind of fall colors and the green doesn't seem to relate to the rest of the outfit colorwise. It looks like spring to me. The sweaters seem ok to me stylewise.

annagybe, you gave me a chuckle! Yes, it is frumpy! I think that's why I thought of Ms. Frizzle! (I was reading those books to my children in the 90's!) It seems I should have been thinking of my grandmother instead!

Zibbets, Great idea! I wish I had some cognac boots. They are currently on my wish list. I found some Frye Boots in my local shoe store but decided against them because they were not weatherproof. Where I live, the season for such an item is very short. I am thinking that by the time I find anything, this skirt will be way past it's prime! (Do they make weatherproof boots in Cognac? I am still trying to figure that out.)

The first outfit is great. The second is not working to my eye - the color combo isn't right and is washing you out, plus it is too frumpy for you! I could see the skirt with a chunkier knit turtleneck or blazer and boots in a neutral like an equestrian Ralph Lauren ad, but not this ribbed one and not this cardi.

The first outfit is just terrific--very polished casual outfit. I'm glad it felt as good as it looks!
I like Angie's rendition of the second outfit for you. A slim pencil skirt would give a similar effect, I think.
I agree with Anna that the turtleneck with a necklace over it does not look current. I'm pretty much off turtlenecks, myself, these days. If I need warmth at my neck, I use a scarf. And I think necklaces and scarves can be worn together, sort of layered--just saying, since I think you've got some really neat jewelry.

Staysfit, I'm not sure the skirt is doing you any favours. The colour pairing of the green and camel is also not my favourite - the free is not quite emerald and not quite mint - and I think you benefit from a clearer colour, no?

That style of ribbed turtleneck isn't really current. Seems very Lands End in the 90's to me. That paired with the necklace over it and that style of cardigan reads very frumpy. It looks a like a little old lady trying to ward of the chills. And yes the skirt is very dated.
I do however like the shoes.

Before you give up on the skirt, try it with boots in a similar color.

Angie_T that's amazing! Yes, I like that much better! I think the skirt needs to go into the purge pile. It is a relic of my belief that I was a Pretty Pear, when I am really a Rectangle shape.

annagybe, please feel free to be honest. That is how I learn, and I am currently trying to understand and update my style. I am only using what I have in my closet at the present moment rather than making any purchases so I don't make further shopping mistakes.

So I'm sitting at my desk with PS open and I did this quick sketch. (I know i'm weird!)

Would you like this better?I just took the outline of your trousers and matchd them to the color of the skirt. I think the combo works but the skirt is off.

Just my opinion though.

Well, it's really the same style sweater but in two different colors.

One day I wore it with my typical fall/winter uniform. Straight leg jeans, a dark red tee, a scarf (one of my favorites, with a cute shoe print), and red AGL flats. I felt great all day wearing this. I was comfortable, cozy and happy all day.

The next day I wore the same sweater with this A-Line skirt and ribbed turtleneck from Athleta. They might be 2-3 years old. I added my tan lace-less oxfords. I'm not sure why I hated this outfit. I felt a bit like Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus. Maybe the green was the wrong choice? I like the green color. I like the camel/tan colors. The skirt felt all wrong. I couldn't pinpoint what was off about it, but I felt like I had to keep tugging at it and moving it around to get it to feel right. Should I purge this skirt? Is it too dated? I felt awkward and uncomfortable all day. The shoes, however were very comfortable and felt like slippers.
