I love the pants and I love your outfit. I've had those pants on and I have them on order. I love graphic prints and black and white. I thought they looked super cool when I had them on. Preppy is NOT my thing so I'm not sure I'd call the pants preppy.....Maybe it depends how you style them. I don't do preppy. I have no idea what country club is. I just think they are fun and graphic.

I don't get too caught up in these discussions about personal style. I find it to be limiting and you can really box yourself in. If an item sings to you, if it works with other things in your closet, and if you feel good in it then I kind of think it's your style.

Deborah summed it up well when she said, " I wonder if sometimes we actually box ourselves into a 'preferred' style and don't give ourselves scope to venture out of that box when the need or desire arises."

Late to the discussion, but I think this is a great outfit and very you. Here's the thing I've discovered: we can find great pieces -- a pair of pumps, printed pants, a button-down -- that attract us but don't *seem* like our style when viewed as individual items. I have plenty of those items. But when you style them in your own way, as you've done here, they work well with your wardrobe and end up bringing extra dimension to your style. So I say well done! Personally I love the pants, since I have a soft spot for graphic black and white prints and a affinity for a touch of preppiness. I love the way you styled them, and I would do something very similar myself.

Una - I am totally confused. Aren't all great outfits by definition "cohesive"? Even when we juxtapose pieces there needs to be a link to give the appearance of "rightness" and organic pleasing element a balance - just like in any art or music. I don't see this outfit as lacking in personal style at all. Great pattern on the pants with lovely graphic integrity with plenty of contrast, asymmetric perfectly fitting sweater, fab booties, great hair, plenty of attitude in the sunnies and scrunch, where do you feel this is lacking? I'm truly perplexed because I think this is a great, elegant casual, UWP, stomp on you in a regal way, at its best.

I think Gaylene makes a very good point! Approprio I can understand what you're saying, but to me your take doesn't contradict what Gaylene said. As least as far as I understood. To me the crux of the matter is that personal style isn't something "out there somewhere" but it's what we're choosing to put on our bodies in our everyday life. And that style might be sometimes influenced by other people's opinion, re pick your battles etc. That doesn't have to mean we're embarrassed or hiding.

ETA

Well, if I didn't "know you" better , or know what I do about what you like to wear, this would not stand out as something really weird on you. Not at all. From a completely objective perspective, you have the body to wear printed pants well, they look very modern and crisp, and the black sweater and footwear make the whole thing very polished. So the only dissonance is from what we know of you, not from how this looks. I never figured you for a Palm Beach country club Pimms drinker

Una, so sorry to sit on your WIW, but Gaylene's comment has got me thinking. She makes a very good point with which I have to politely disagree.

When it comes to our appearance, we really cannot win. Make too much of an effort, and you're "the woman with all the shoes", make too little and you've let yourself go. Why not let the woman with all the shoes enjoy her shoes? She's probably great at her job. I don't hear anyone heaping the same judgement on the guy with the fancy car.

A love of fashion isn't something we should be embarrassed about or have to hide. It's a fascinating art form that we can all engage in. I like my clothes to say something specific about me, and if that's something people notice about me, then so be it. I wouldn't have it any other way. Dunno about you, but I'm proud to be a dandy. :)

I am sorry about my photos! I need to work on that...

Fascinating comments! Lisa nailed my concerns - although Kate Spade/Tory Burch is a shadow style for me, I need to mix it up. This is pretty polished for me but still fits enough criteria to make me feel like myself.

I am curious as to how this outfit would come across if you all didn't know me so well!

Gaylene, your comments are well taken and make complete sense. We can be authentic in many ways. I am going to favorite this post so I can remember that when I'm feeling like I'm too cohesive!

My first reaction was "of course this is a Una look"--the everyday-get-dressed-in-morning-for-my-life version of UWP, not the I'm-for-fashion UWP version. With a few exceptions, most of us on this forum don't live and work in environments that require us to look knowledgeable about fashion to be credible. Fashion is a part of our lives but not in the same way it would be if we were working in a fashion-related field. To me, it makes sense we reflect and acknowledge this fact in our personal style. And I don't think that makes our style less our own; in fact, I'd argue the exact opposite--it's the "personal" in personal style.

Those of us who work and live in non-fashion environments run the very risk of looking less credible and approachable if we dress for a fantasized version of our style on a daily basis. Lisa's comment about not wanting to be known as "the woman with all the shoes" by her colleagues made me stop and think on how a passion for fashion can all too easily end up becoming our main identifier in the minds of other. An admiring comment is flattering, but when my outfits become the totality of me, I'm running the very real risk of becoming a caricature--and that is an unpleasant thought. My personal style ought to enhance my possibilities in life, not stifle them.

ETA: wow, just realized I wrote an essay here--and you just asked for feedback on an outfit! But Astrid's thread really got me musing about why we think our personal style is "out there" even when we are happy with what we are wearing.

And, yes, I think this outfit is totally Una--no one else could wear those pieces like you do. Those pants are UWP because of what YOU bring to the party. Your personal style turns even the most sedate top or bottom into something edgy and a bit dangerous. That's why you rocked the skirted legging--and turned a potential mini skirt into a fierce butt vest.

Interesting - I'll be the outlier here (oh gee THAT's never happened before) and agree that this isn't a typical Una look. It's a good one, but not one I would expect to see on you. The pant print has a country-club/Tory Burch vibe going on, which is not you at all, but you wear them really well and toughen them up with all of the black, and your fantastic hair. Go for it! Cohesive indeed.

I have to go back and find Astrid's thread. I'm wondering what would make this a better outfit for you? Because I include the sunglasses and the shoes part of the fit.

This seems like an "Una" outfit to me. And being cohesive is not a crime. ;)

Curious about why it doesn't necessarily feel "you."

Definitely you with the surprise addition of the printed pants. Do you mean cohesive as opposed to ultimate?

I don't see this outfit as "un-you" at all - maybe stretching the edges, but in a good way. I love this outfit. I've never been a big fan of printed pants (I know, I maybe the only one!!) but I like this a lot :)

I have read Astrid's post but being at work haven't had time to formulate an intelligent response I like this outfit on you:) The pants are not what I would assume for you but they look really good.. so good I might need to go back a get a similar pair I have seen that have tempted me. I think there are enough elements here to make the outfit look like you. I think you have added your signature edge with your footwear, the black and your hair. I wonder if sometimes we actually box ourselves into a 'preferred' style and don't give ourselves scope to venture out of that box when the need or desire arises.
