I think the size of the coat, mostly because of the sleeves and length, is a little overwhelming on your figure, but the colour really suits you. Off topic, and I hope this is okay to comment on, but you remind me so much of Peggy from Mad Men.

Thank you FuzzyLogic!

Vildy, I love Liz's description too. Also, I popped out the shoulder pads yesterday morning (turned out to be very easy, didn't even have to rip & resew the lining), and I think that makes it look less dated (my shoulders still provide plenty of structure). I wore it on a walk yesterday and felt good, not self conscious, so I'm keeping it. I didn't have time to get pictures though.

I'm with Liz! High five! When I see that trench I think Dick Tracy! I wouldn't be so concerned about the concept of 'dated', but rather how you make this piece you own! I love your individual and eclectic style!

Thanks so much to everyone again for taking the time to give me coat feedback. The 3 main problems you have all pointed out (too big, the shoulders & sleeves, which Vildy is right, have a dolman thing going on for no apparent reason, and more dated than vintage) are what made me hesitate in the dressing room too. And yet, when I went to return it to the rack, I couldn't bring myself to let go, in case someone came up and claimed it instead, which is why it came home with me. ;)

I tried it on again this morning over a thicker sweater, a blazer/jacket, and then with my boots. And even with all of the criticisms you have brought up (kindly and tactfully!) clearly visible in the mirror, I still couldn't help grinning and twirling as I was wearing it. I have no clue why I love this whacky 80s coat, I can't quite justify it rationally or sartorially, but I do. It also does a good job of blocking the wind and rain, so it is functional at least.

Around here, coats are the most challenging item to thrift: perhaps because it's a warm climate, I almost never see current coats the way I do other clothing items. Perhaps things will be different in the north, but this is the first trench I've tried on in 3 years (since I've moved here) that I could see myself wearing. So I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep it as a placeholder, see how much use I get out of a trench after my move (to gauge whether it'd be worth it to spend more money on), and of course keep an eye out in my new area for a less problematic replacement. I hope it doesn't seem rude or willful to go against your helpful advice! I honestly thought I was prepared to return it when I titled this K/R, but I find I've grown attached. And if I find a replacement, I can always use the fabric to make a little doggie raincoat. hehe

I will be sure not to wear it in situations when I need to impress people/be beautifully dressed, which fortunately doesn't happen too often. ;)

Thanks again! My arthritis is acting up again, so I don't have it in me to reply individually to everyone today (I'd rather save my typing energy for commenting on your threads), but that doesn't make me any less grateful and appreciative.

Oh, and I almost forgot, but thank you for the comments on my outfit too. Clouds for the win!

The bee in the center is a darling placement. Coat: looks a little big, but it makes you so happy that I think you ought to keep as long as a long-term placeholder.

That's a lotta coat. :D It's got that 40's spy look in #7. The armscye looks
almost dolman? I'm not the biggest fan of the current crop of narrowed sleeves, especially if worn over a jacket underneath, and I think the wider
sleeve is going to sneak back in - they're already there on the big egg-shaped boyfriend coats. I think the wide sleeve and the low armhole work with this style coat. But I also suspect the whole design structure would work well as is on a more statuesque person. However, if it pleases you to wear it and you will wear it, then enjoy the heck out of it.

The tiny bee pin totally charmed me. As for the trench, it does seem big. It may be dated but with your particular style that may work. I love the cape. I wonder if the sleeves can be taken in?

That cloud sweater always makes me smile! Such a clever thing to do. And the bee....

Onto the coat. I love the cape detail and can see why you fell in love with that. And I want to love the coat. But but but...I don't know....it is reading more as dated than vintage to my eye. Why? I am asking myself this, and also asking if my judgement is to be trusted on this. It is something about the combination of the collar style, single breasted fastening, raglan sleeves, and wider arm.

Having said that, if you love it, you will wear it brilliantly. That's the thing -- in the end, your love for it will conquer all. And the price is right. I would hang onto it for now, especially with the move ahead.

Seeing that cute cloud sweater again reminds me that I finally got around to patching my holey sweaters. I ordered some wool roving and felting needles and just kind of poked until I ended up with some patches. Not as nice-looking as yours, but at least they're wearable again without much effort.

To me, the trench does look a little big, but it has such fun details and it sounds like it would be a big upgrade from your current one. So I'd say keep, especially at Goodwill prices. A coat you want to wear is way better than one you don't!

High five to early 20th century/nerdy = perfect. Put a smile on my face. The oversized trench does work with your outfit. Yes, it's a lot of coat. But for me, that's not a deal breaker. I think the cape detail really suits you. It definitely has an Edwardian sense to it. Definitely play with it a bit before making a decision -- and it makes you happy so give major points for that. It's an Edwardian boyfriend trench. I like it. :)

Hmmmm....lots to think about! Thanks for all of the honest feedback. I'm off to sleep, but I have a week to decide, so I'll keep trying it on and seeing how I feel. And I'll see if I can slim the sleeves at all! In the end, it might end up being an upgraded 'placeholder,' keeping me warm and dry when I need it while I search for my dream trench, whatever that might be, or while I develop enough sewing skills to make one myself.

And the retro vs dated thing reminds me of when I came home years ago so excited at finding a 1950s sweater & my mom, very sweetly and honestly, asked "What's the difference between vintage and used clothing?" I do see now how the sleeves look more dated than retro, with all of that width!

I think this fits you well, including the shoulders, and the shoulder pads give it structure. The width of the sleeves is retro/dated to my eye. The fullness at the top enables you to wear a bulky layer underneath which I think is great. If this were my coat, I would taper the sleeves so that they weren't so wide at the wrist and would better go with the sleekness of the body. The current wrist width overwhelms you a bit IMHO. I'm not sure whether the width of the sleeve cuffs would look proportional if the sleeve were narrower; I guess you could pin to find out.

Oh, and the color looks really great on you! I see colors like that (which I can't wear) and wonder who they would flatter. Now, I know.

Hmm, to me it looks too big, not so much in the body but definitely in the arms. That looser fit in the arms also looks a bit dated to me; I feel like modern cuts are much more fitted in the arms.

Without reading your post first, I did notice the same shoulder concerns that you wrote about. The shoulder pads and raglan-style sleeves are a bit vintage / retro / dated (depending on your perspective). But, if you love it and if you need a coat, it fits you very well and it has a lot of your style.

The sky was cloudy when I woke up, so I knew it'd be a perfect day to wear my diy'ed cashmere sweater with cloud elbow patches. Before I got dressed I checked the weather report, which promised a high of 55 F/13C, so I paired it with these cotton/nylon trousers and felt a bit early 20th century/nerdy (in other words, perfect, lol). To run errands, I popped on my grey oxfords (not pictured) and didn't bother with a coat as I didn't want to have to carry it in overheated stores...little did I know the polar vortex was headed this way. By the time I finished my errands a couple hours later, the temperature had dropped almost 20 degrees (10ish C)! I would have frozen, despite the cashmere. But luckily, I had a new coat with me, which I bought because the last of my errands was thrifting (not really an errand obviously, just a treat after everything else).

Ever since I wore my classic trench for one post and got feedback saying it wasn't quite right, I've realised that it must not be 'my' trench. After all, I take any excuse possible to pull out my wool coats, because I love them all, but I certainly didn't wear that trench 'just in case' it would rain. So when I saw this coat at the thrift store today, in a wonderful taupe shade, I decided to try it on. Clearly, I liked what I saw! What I love is the subtle hints of 19th century to it: when I tie it with the belt in the back, it gives it waist shaping from the front that reminds of late Victorian dresses. And of course the cape bit makes me think of great coats. Surprisingly enough, although it's quite long, I don't feel overwhelmed by it either! I've included several photos: 3 from the front of various ways to wear it (I'm partial to the first 2), 1 of the back with its dramatic cape thing, 1 from the side, and a close up of the pretty buttons and collar. I've included this many so that you guys can tell me if I need to return it: my Goodwill allows exchanges if not returns, so it is possible to send it back. I hope I don't have to though, as just wearing it for the photos had me prancing around in delight, it has a zip out wool lining that makes it even more flexible, and I'm going to need a trench when I move north, and I rarely come across ones that fit in thrift stores. With all that in mind, I'd say as long as you guys consider it a 7/8, I'll keep it!

When I brought it home, it had lost 2 of the front buttons. Luckily, there was 1 on each sleeve, so I just performed a little button reassignment. I have a few options of button pairs to do the sleeves in, but I'm leaning towards tortoiseshell ones right now. I safety pinned the sleeve cuffs where the old buttons held them in place: I'm not sure I like the kind of crumpling going on due to tighter cuffs, so should I sew the new buttons on further out to to make the cuff width closer to the sleeve's (the sleeve length is perfect, which is miraculous in and of itself)? Or is that just how it's supposed to look? And speaking of tweaking, there are some small shoulder pads that I could easily remove by opening a bit of the lining and stitching it closed again. The shoulder pads are in the same place as my actual shoulders, they're just a bit squarer (my shoulders are broad but sloping), so I don't know if they look funny or not.

So there you have it: a potential upgrade to my current trench. Do let me know if you see any major problems with it, despite my enthusiasm. And if you have an opinion, definitely weigh in on the sleeves & shoulder pad issues! Comments welcome on the outfit too of course; I styled it quite similarly to its first outing, just different trousers, and I added my bee in the middle of the collar (which I swear likes to ruffle just in time for photos to mock me; looking down now it's laying correctly; the symmetry issue might be more permanent, so I'll trim down a side of the collar if necessary). Apologies for the photobombing, just wanted you guys to see enough of the trench to be able to give a good opinion!
