Thnx so much everyone! It's so interesting getting regular outfit feedback, and I suspect it's going to do wonders for my style. I wish I'd had the courage to join the forum when I found it a couple of years ago! Ah well.

Neel, isn't the in between weather frustrating? I have to be careful right now because in the mornings it's a bit cooler so I want to put on my woolens, but then by 11:00 in the morning I'm sweltering. *sigh*

Jeanie, tell me about it! I'm moving up north next year in large part because of the weather. I love snow and miss it. And giant deciduous trees, I miss those too. lol

Both looks are really nice! The unlayered version is understated yet interesting. The second isn't too over the top at all, although it does have a certain drama in combination with those pants. If you wanted to try the layering while keeping the rest of the outfit subdued, I could see a longer pair of pants being an option worth trying.

The layering looks great and I like your silver accents. I just love the romance of pintucks and peplum. Hope you get a break from the heat...wow 89 is hot for Nov. I am wishing for snow.

I love the layered look! The oxfords are a lovely shade of gray and the belt is a beauty too (You just gave me the idea to change the laces of my oxfords). Totally not my style but you seem to carry the look so well makes me want to try! Those breeches are cute too. I would wear them in a heart beat in our *too cold for AC and too hot without AC* weather right now!

Thanks to everyone for weighing in! I'm thrilled that layering the 2 wovens doesn't look super strange, so I'll be trying it out again I think. :) Vix, gamine is one of my style inspirations, but I'm less sure about the word dramatic. In fact, I think I like the word subtle more!

Alexandra, I definitely seek out blouses & dresses with details when I'm thrifting! In the super heat of summer especially I feel the details help make my clothes look more like outfits, but I also just really love buttons and pintucks and pleats and things like that. They feel old-fashioned in the good sense, so very nostalgic, which is my 'accent' word from the Style Statement book if you've read it. It's funny, I find those details on tops from all kinds of store: this one is Old Navy. Almost all of my sweaters are plain though: it's more difficult to find sweaters with accents, which is part of why I decided to take up knitting! Perhaps I'll find myself sewing one of these days, but I think it's less forgiving for newbies because you can't just unravel your mistakes.

I like both looks. The layered one looks vaguely d'Artagnan (in a good way) to me. Thank you for sharing the closeup, too. You seem to have a lot of pieces with interesting details and I enjoy seeing them. Do you choose your pieces for the details when you're shopping?

Hi E --

Love that ring; how nice to have a gift from your teens that you still feel like wearing!

You made me laugh with your "Dutch portrait" reference.

I do like the original blouse + breeches, and I do like the layering of the blouses.

I think the combo of the layering + breeches reads as a dramatic gamine look, and I'm not sure whether that's desirable or far off from where you want to go (most/some of the time). [Sorry to not be caught up with your style preferences!] If it's off the mark, I'd definitely play with different pants/jeans/shorts, especially as the look is so practical for your needs.

Yesterday was stupidly hot. As in, record breaking high of 89 F/31 C. Luckily, this is my 3rd November here, so I've had time to realise that summer weight clothes in autumn colours are important to my psychological well being. It was all cotton again, this time in the form of a dark grey pleated blouse with a pintucks-and-buttons yoke and purple corduroy breeches (the colour wasn't showing up well in the full body shots, hence the awkward detail close up to prove their purpleness). This is their second life; their first life was as giant flares which is probably what got them donated to the thrift store in the first place. This blouse is insanely full on its own; sometimes I enjoy that, but it also belts fairly well, making a little peplum. Yesterday I was in a peplum mood and spent most of the day in mild air conditioning, where the belt didn't make me too hot. I finished off with a pearl ring that picked up the blue grey of the blouse (it was my 16th birthday present from my parents) and a fairly chunky silver bracelet since I thought my normal delicate one would get lost.

I spent most of the day dressed as you see in the first photo, until it came time to go for my walk. The new-to-me grey oxfords seemed like the obvious choice, and as I'm still not feeling great, obvious worked. It was still too warm for a jacket, and I didn't really relish a cardigan either, but I like to have sleeves on when I'm outside to give my arms extra sun protection. So I tried a new to me thing: layering a silk blouse under the woven cotton one. I've never done this before and have no clue if it looks good, or if I've veered too far into Dutch portrait territory. Please let me know! Only my neighbours saw it, so no biggie if I look ridiculous. If not, this would open up new territory for me as far as layering in warm weather, as I stayed comfortable on my walk. If it is too over the top, do you think the blouse layering might work with a simpler trouser style (aka not breeches)? Or lower contrast colours? Or has the unseasonable heat and my not feeling well gone to my brain? hehe I promise not to be offended either way.

All comments and suggestions welcome, especially ones pertaining to my Dutchness or lack thereof.
