Cee and Val MN - the temp conversion thing really does matter Winter in the mountains (anywhere) is going to have pretty cold days so Cee you HAVE experienced it at least a bit. I find it kind of fun to "brag" about severe winter weather - makes it a little easier to take.

Cee, maybe this is just a units conversion issue and you actually have experienced the kind of cold Chris is talking about. -10C = 14 °F and 22F = -5.5 °C

I've experienced snow at Mount Hotham, a ski resort in the Snowy Mountains in the state of Victoria. I think the temperature was -10C (50F).

I was dressed in jeans, boots, a poloneck under another sweater with an insulated jacket and I was fine... It certainly wasn't blizzard conditions, though.

Wow Sal, Jon as a NZ person must be quite stunned. I've been seeing social media videos of people cross country skiing down some of the main streets and esp Beacon Hill which is a beautiful old neighborhood with quite steep hills.

Thanks Lisa - this amount of snow is going to take several weeks to melt, and it's the snowiest time of year so we could get more. This time of year the temps do get above freezing but not by much. By end of March much better.

Indigoprint, I loved a "snow day" when I was a kid, sledding and other fun stuff outdoors, but I don't like being stuck in the house quite so much now. Sounds like you know the "power outage possibility" drill!

Suz yeah my wardrobe does work well for these type of conditions. When I see influencers posting their "how to layer for cold winter" outfits with a button down shirt, sneakers, an open coat, and maybe a scarf I know they don't live in the northeast US!

In WI we have missed the quantities but still need to be prepared.
Just today with only 2-3 inches predicted, the winds were so fierce we collected water jugs and flashlights just in case for a power outage.

Yeah Jenni NZ, snow is pretty shocking when you rarely get it! It IS pretty. I'm seeing videos today of folks skiing on the streets of Boston and NYC - kinda fun! I was dressed pretty warmly but since I was shoveling (which is pretty strenuous) I didn't need my warmest gear.

Pat_p yeah it's so typical for one area to get a lot of snow and not so far away not so much snow.

Thanks MsMary! I envy your ability there in SoCal to make outfits this time of year WITHOUT serious outerwear!

ChristiJ - 1" of snow for us this winter is not even worth mentioning

Angie - yeah we have gotten pretty good at dealing with snow over the years. The big fun for the next few days is waiting for the huge loud bangs when the snow warms up a little and slides off the roof and the solar panels - it happened an hour or so ago, a huge pile filled up an area that had just been cleared Yup, the days are longer, the temps are a little warmer, spring is definitely on the way.

Smart move cookie - shoveling a foot of snow off a car parked alongside a sidewalk also with a foot of snow can't be a good time. I've never lived in a city but have seen plenty of photos of how nasty that can be.

Thanks Jaileen! Yep, lots of snow. This winter we've had a lot more than the last two, but certainly not an unheard of amount for this area.

That’s a lot of snow! You look nice and toasty.
Last week we got 15 inches of snow, but it was in two batches. I was so glad because until then, we’d only had one inch. It’s melting fast, and they’re forecasting rain, even in the mountains.

Fabbers in the US and Canada no doubt heard about (or experienced) the Blizzard of '26 that hit yesterday all along the Northeast US (and into southeast Canada I believe) Everything was shut down yesterday. Boston got 1.5 feet of snow or more (on top of a bunch of snow leftover from a storm a few weeks ago) Where I live an hour west we got about a foot, although it's hard to tell because some snow is 4-5' deep in drifts, other places under a foot. Providence RI and the part of Mass near it got close to 3 feet. At 7am this morning there were still 250K people without power but the outages did not hit where I live. SO GRATEFUL!! The map of where the snow was deepest, wind was highest, the most power outages, was a very unusual distribution for this type of storm in Mass. A few of the worst hit counties are still under "state of emergency" today and most of the schools are still closed because it's going to take a while to move all this snow. I heard on the news this morning that the Boston Globe newspaper (founded 1872) is NOT going to have a print edition today for the first time ever because people couldn't get to work to produce it. Lots of comparisons to the infamous blizzard of '78 although I think that one still holds some of the records.

I just shoveled the snow from the screened in porch (wind has to be pretty hight for it to blow in), a pathway across the deck and one of the two stairways off the deck. DH is doing the lions share of the clearing the driveway and brick walks with the snowblower and using snow rake to clear the solar panels. A LOT of show but the winter 11 years ago was worse.

I was done with my part of this by 7:30 am.

Coat - very old Lands End Puffer that I mostly wear for morning walks when it's not too frigid.
Fleece Jacket - LLBean
Fleece turtleneck.- Uniqlo Heattech
Fleece lined tights - one of several I own, don't know the brand.
Neck gaiter - a Gap Kids fleece found at a Goodwill store quite a few years ago, perfect size for my small neck
Fleece lined knit hat - Rachel Zoe. set of 3 found at TJMaxx for $15 this winter - they have been immediate workhorses!
Downhill skiing gloves - brand found at TJMaxx.
Boots - Keen. My walking boots for deep winter
Socks - no find but they are very thick Smart Wool.

At 22F, it was not cold enough to need battery headed gloves or vest for shoveling, although they were charged and ready along with flashlights and every other chargeable battery item we own.

1. My outfit
2. the part of the deck I shoveled
3+4. DH with the snowblower
5 Path from the front door ... still need to shovel right next to the door
