I bought a glorious red gown in 2008 when we were invited to attend one of the presidential inaugural balls (what a treat!). I kept that dress around for years even though the had no idea when I’d wear it again. Then, almost ten years later, a friend of ours was elected mayor of our nearest city (the state capital) and we attended the inaugural ball for that occasion! Red gown to the rescue. So maybe I’m down to a couple hundred dollars a wear, LOL. (Or at least an acceptable one.)<br /> As far as the women in the black dresses… given that I have had my only ball gown ( black and sparkly lurex) in my closet since 2013 and only worn it once (about $300 cost per wear) then I would have tried to do what they did I suspect. I just have never been asked to another ball since In retrospect I should have rented at the time, but in 2013 I didn’t think of that. My DD2 was 19 then and came along to confirm the purchase- I remember her saying it was nice that I had the ability to just buy it (had the income). I am usually so careful with my spend but it was my first full-length gown purchase in over a decade at the time.
