Ha! I'm joining the spill club. I got green tea on my white jeans clean on today!

Jenn, had you not aired your feelings on this outfit I would have to say you look great, but obviously you aren't quite feeing it yourself. I like Maneera's pic showing tan/brown accents, so perhaps that's the way to go. I really like the proportions you have with this outfit, though.

BTW, I haven't heard of that brand of bag. Off to Google it.

I also think the proportions look good, for future reference...

I have to confess to regularly stalking the Tom Bihn website since I discovered them on my hunt for a great carryon travel bag. But of course the prices are insane if you add shipping to Germany and customs. I'm dreaming of an Aeronaut 30... And that Synapse 19 looks so great, now that my current everyday backpack has worn out yet again. Ah well, a girl can dream.

Agree with everybody that proportions are great, but it's time to let the pants go if they are stretched and faded!
I would be curious to see this outfit with a small heel (sandals or pumps).

I just got a Tom Bihn backpack for my birthday in April (the daypack one)! And some of the little organising bags. In love with the quality, although I have to admit I'm tempted to seam ripper the label off. Your bag looks great. I so wish they still sold bags in cork; I would buy one and wear it forever.

Anyway, I really the proportions of those ankle pants on you, but I also hate having to tug waistbands up a million times during the day, so it sounds like these should be thanked for their service and kicked out of your closet. ;)

I agree that this outfit feels a bit too crisp/edgy compared to your aspirational styles; I think it's both the colour and the fit, as Maneera also observed. The necklace is also very shiny & crisp, which matches this outfit but perhaps doesn't match you as well? I can see that black top looking great & bookworm-ish with wooden jewelry, a slouchier pair of trousers, and medium brown leather accents.

Just musing out loud here though!

You might be onto something with the silhouette, Ryce. This is a really practical summer formula for me, but I have been dissatisfied with it recently and may just be shopping in a rut. I really love the idea of plaid pants. I love plaid in general, but this implementation isn't working for me.

Honestly, though, the biggest problem is the comfort. I hate pulling and tugging at my clothes, and I'm constantly having to pull these pants up and adjust them (despite them being glued to my thighs). It makes me crazy. It's not worth tailoring a faded $15 item, so yeah, they probably have to go.

Coffee spills, ummm, yes. I have a new pair of white jeans that has been hanging in my closet unworn for six weeks - too scared I will stain them beyond redemption on their first wear.

But getting back to the matter at hand, if your plaid pants are indeed faded and stretched out, definitely get rid of them ASAP. You deserve MUCH better than that!! And it doesn't sound as though you love them enough to try to replace them with something similar, either.

In the spirit of learning something from them before they are discarded, you' ve gotten some great feedback:

That style does objectively work for you (pants length, leg width, etc.), but obviously isn't thrilling you at the moment. Didn't you post another pic of a cropped pants outfit that you weren't loving anymore? Maybe that is just a silhouette that isn't "you" at this time in your life?

The shape of that top is terrific on you. But it does feel like too much black with the pants. If you were going to keep those pants, I would be interested to see them with a teal or wine top, or a red that flatters you. Also, I very much like Maneera's suggestion of white with brown accessories - brilliant!

I really like your silver pendant, too, but the necklace seems a little long for that fitted top. Could it be shortened to rest above the neckline of the top - or maybe the pendant is too large for that?

That bag is to die for! Color, texture - love it!

I think you're onto something here. Adding tan might be the way to make that outfit more you.

Those are closer, Maneera. I especially like how the first photo is paired with brown. I have a feeling adding brown may be key for me when wearing either black or white. At the moment, I have no white anything in my closet because I'm notorious for spilling coffee on every white thing I've ever owned. I'm trying to get past that. Women in their 40s shouldn't need bibs. :)

I absolutely love this outfit. The proportions look good too.

However, I do feel this outfit is less 'you', as you rightly pointed out. Maybe it is the high contrast b&w, or maybe it's becoz both the pieces are quite fitted and tailored and have no slouch? Have you tried pairing those pants with a floaty white blouse?

Thanks, Carter. I wouldn't have thought of differences based on the width of the leg, but that totally makes sense.

Word Lily, I have two Tom Bihn bags and the one that's fifteen years old looks just as good as the one that's only two or three years old. The quality is incredible. On the color front, I think I'd need more than shoes. I'm feeling the need for a more nuanced palette. There's something too crisp and modern about black + white + bright color. I don't feel like I pull it off well.

I'm not a proportions pro by any stretch, but this combo looks good on that front. I love the bag! I've heard so many great things about Tom Bihn bags, but I haven't had the opportunity ... yet. I do think you'd be happier if you had a color in this outfit, would shoes be enough?

I think the length of the ankle pants is great.I find that I have about a 4" range that depends almost entirely on the width of the leg. I prefer my slimmer leg pants 3-4" above my ankle and wider leg pants 6-8" above my ankle. I also like the the length of your top with these pants.

Met up with some fellow makers for coffee this morning. We've been meeting monthly to share business tips for a couple years now and have become as much friends as colleagues.

This outfit is another one that I suspect is fine, just not fine for me. Eva pointed out in my challenge thread that a lot of my aspirational outfits combine, as she put it, "quirkier neutrals," so this high-contrast black and white combination might just not be me. Also, the ankle pants are Old Navy pixie pants, which seemed really great when I bought them, but a season later, they're already faded, tight in the thighs, saggy in the knees, and droopy at the waist. Not effortless in the least.

I do like my bag. It's very casual, but I love the burlap detail and Tom Bihn bags are crazy well-made.

Personal style aside, I'm interested in hearing your take on proportions here. My eye still hasn't really adjusted to what's flattering in an ankle pant and what works/doesn't on my body.

Wearing: Express ruched drape neck top in black, Old Navy plaid pixie pants, black ballet flats, red Tom Bihn messenger bag with burlap accent
