Bee, I like your style. It has the look of COS and some of the other more avant guarde designers. Your hair is lovely. It looks great with your look.

Liesbeth - I may have to play with more structured tops+looser bottoms, instead of looser tops+skinny bottoms. A bit of a switcharoo but I like it!

rachylou - like you, heels just don't work for my lifestyle. I kept a few pairs during the recent closet purge, but they're not for everyday wear. Even with flats, finding a comfortable style is such a struggle. I love the look of pointier toes, but they restrict my foot too much. Loafer-style designs generally work better, but can skew a bit too preppy. D'orsays are really growing on me. They feel a few steps up from Toms, which I've been wearing for the past few summers, and hit a sweet spot between dressy and casual.

Yes the crops with the cardi definitely takes it up a notch. I was wondering if I should suggest shoes. I was thinking shoe shoes would make things dressier. Your new d’orsays add a lot of polish. Do you have a preference for flat shoes? What do you think of heels? In my life they’re not very practical, but they’re an option.

Oooh, I really like the mustard cardi with the wide crops - so trendy! My first thought was also that, that you may want to move away from skinny jeans in favor of fitted or wider styles. Do consider structure like Angie said. You have such nice shoulders.

So I tried a few small changes. My new d'Orsay style flats arrived! And I do like them very much and am wearing them today with my rust dress (I ironed the belt too. ). I feel like they give me a slightly more refined and daintier look, compared to the chunky chukka booties I wore in the original photos. These shoes fill in a huge hole in my shoe wardrobe, as I didn't have any closed-toe flats to wear with dresses (threw away my last pair of canvas Toms that have worn out). These will go well with almost everything! And finally a non-black shoe, yay! They're slightly snug in the toe, but the leather is already stretching so I know they'll be comfy as heck pretty soon.

I also wore wide crops with the mustard sweater, thanks to CarolS's suggestion. I really like the vibe! (And sorry for an awkward pose - I tried to shop off the pant width). However, the crops have a bow-tie waist, and the sneakers felt way too sporty for this look. Slim cat suggested dressier sneakers, which inspired a desire for something a bit more elevated. I didn't go with sneakers, but ordered a pair of black leather Birdies and a pair of Aquatalia mules to fill the "black flats to go with everything" hole. I'd keep only 1 of these. They may be a bit too dressy, but we'll see.

I love the linen looks you have going on! You look great in these oversized pieces. I don’t think the dress looks sloppy— it’s an intentional look. I think there is a word for it: lagenlook.

Hi Bee, I first read your hair post and then this one. I could not see any visuals there so when I saw your pics I was literally blown away. I think you look fantastic. Your hair is fabulous - maybe with just a little more definition. You and I seem to have similar hair color and skin color, dark hair and light skin (with blue undertones - obviously don't know yours :). My eyes are blue. I agree with Shevia, you look high contrast to me. Dark hair/light skin. I can wear almost any color EXCEPT beige - look absolutely awful as I disappear into the color. If I wear white it must be optic white, not creamy/ivory - although this is not a favourite. High contrast and winter people look fabulous in black. I think cobalt blue will look amazing on you, any blue actually. I have similar hair issues to you and since I relocated to the seaside five years ago I don't recognise myself in our humid summers, the challenge is real. There is no point straightening it as it curls and frizzes in 10 minutes. I have just had to embrace it and this is still a work in progress. I have found a leave-in product by Black Professional Line (made in Itally) called Crystalli Liquidi with Linseed Oil helpful at lowering the frizz without making it heavy or dirty looking. The key ingredient is cyclopentasiloxane - any product with this should have a similar effect. In winter my hair is back to being more sleek - crazy but true! I am also a newbie here.

I haven't read the comments so sorry if I am just repeating! First of all you are way to hard on yourself. Your hair is fabulous and also super trendy. It does NOT make you look off balanced at all imho. (Maybe not so humble in this case .) While I am being definitive, I will also add that you are not low contrast with your dark hair and light skin. You look high contrast to me.

Your outfits look great! I love #3 and #5 as is and the concept of #1 although you might prefer a long jacket with more fitted shoulders.

slim cat - Thank you for the feedback! I might try on some dressier sneakers to see how it feels. It's not normally a style I gravitate towards, but I think I need to break out of a rut and try something a bit different. I recently purchased these flats:

https://www.mooreaseal.com/pro.....2430218244. They're still in the mail, so fingers crossed. Shoes have always been pretty tough for me. It's just so difficult to find a comfortable pair, so I settle a lot. During the summer, I live in Toms (work) and Birkenstocks (leisure), but fall, winter, and spring generally bring on an existential footwear crisis.

Angie - That is such a huge compliment!! Cos and Madewell are definitely me style icons, so it's incredible to hear that from you. I'm holding on to every suggestion and will for sure be trying more wide crops, dresses, and blue. Structure, movement, tailoring - these are really helpful concepts to think about, and I'll be letting it all percolate. I noticed that when I look at inspiration online, I'm drawn to things that have a distinct shape - column or trapeze, for example - but softened by the choice of fabric such as linen or gauze-like cotton. The fringe is a source of both great joy and deep despair. I feel like it really livens up my look and gives it more character, but I get frustrated when it doesn't sit the right way. Without it, I feel kinda bland. I may try a slightly longer version as it's growing out, more swept to the side than in the middle of the face.

kkards - Thank you! I bought my first sewing machine on a whim last summer, and it's been quite a journey. I use premade patterns, but am already feeling the desire to make my own modifications, mostly to copy $300 dress designs. I'll have to experiment more with the skirt and try a shorter top this time. I think you're right that small changes can have a huge impact on the overall look, and I feel very inspired to try wearing things in new combinations and proportions, just to see what impact that has. I'm getting so many new ideas just from this thread!

1st I’m in awe of anyone who says I made this...just wow.
2nd. Yay for posting your first WIW. The first time is the hardest.
3rd. I think you’ve got a good foundation. Sometimes a little experimentation can help refine what you like and what makes you feel good. And small tweaks can go a long way.
For example for me the belt in #3 takes the dress to a different place then in #4. I love the skirt in #5, have you tried it with a shorter top?

CONGRATS! Lovely to see you post, Bee. You look trendy and from 2020. My first thoughts were that COS and Madewell should put you in their modeling campaigns :)

In terms of body type: a slim and straight hourglass. Dainty but square shoulders. Your body type is similar to my own. If it helps, and FWIW, I like to wear structured outfits, but with a LOT of movement. I don't do tight on the bottom. I wear lots of fluid pieces, items that flow, but with tailoring. The tailoring adds back in the polish. Always with flats - like you!

Your hair is super cute! Have you tried growing out the fringe?

I echo the others and encourage shades of BLUE. They also look great with the black.

Try wide crops and flares instead of skinnies, and throw in some dresses.

I kinda like lab coat the way it is - probably with more polished jeans in neutral color?.. Something from 90-s comes to mind.
The mustard cardigan would be fun with dresses/boots combo or straight jeans/pants - great color on you.
Outfit in 5/6 is working fine - love the bright lipstick on you.
Footwear question: How do you feel about dressier sneakers, sleek and minimal? Something like that:
https://us.ecco.com/ecco-simpi.....1007_color

Thank you all so much for your encouragement and feedback! It is all much appreciated as I scramble to figure out the direction I need to take. It seems that the majority like the rust dress and don't consider it too large, so I will keep it as is. It looks worse in pictures than in person, so it's probably fine, and I do love wearing it! I will sew the next one in a smaller size and see what happens.

Runcarla - Cos is one of my style inspirations, so this is a HUGE compliment!! Thank you! You rock your curls beautifully.

Cardiff girl - I've never heard of Toast, but I looked them up and absolutely love their vibe! It will definitely go on the list of brands to draw ideas from.

Rachylou - New Drab! Ha! I love it. Maybe dressier. Maybe slightly more elegant, refined, or intentional, without being more formal. Not sure if that makes sense. I really love your question because it makes me reflect on what it is I'm trying to change, and that's not easy to answer!

Synne - Thank you! I'm excited to find all the right little adjustments!

CarolS - I think I'll give the mustard sweater a go with wide crops. Just thinking about it makes me really excited. Why didn't I think of it before?!

Joy - I will experiment with more blue this season. I was inspired by Angie's trends post, but your comment makes it a sure thing. :)

Gigi - Color theories are so fascinating! I do gravitate much more to neutrals for sure and consider myself in the "muted" camp. I think skin undertones have something to do with it too, as I look horrific in beige (goodbye camel coat dreams).

Irina - Your feedback really helps to identify some problem areas, so I'll keep them in mind. I'm experimenting with some new hair products to find something that would give my hair more definition without making it look greasy/dirty. I think it would definitely help me achieve a more refined look.

Jenni NZ - I have always considered myself more pear just going by measurements, but several people mentioned slim hourglass. I never really thought of shoulders as affecting the traditional body shape, but it makes a lot of sense! I'll be reading up on dressing both body shapes in the "archives" as Cardiff girl suggested.

Hi Bee nice to “meet” you. You have hair really similar to one of my daughters. She has struggled with it at times. Mine was not quite as curly as hers, more wavy rather than very curly.
I like your last pic a lot especially the topper. And I like the outfit with the cardigan. The mustard suits you.
I thought probably a slim or neat hourglass, as opposed to a full hourglass. One of my style books differentiates between the two, because what suits the full-busted, full-hipped hourglass may not look quite right on a neater hourglass. I did wonder about the slightest pear tendency at first but looking again I think shoulders and hips look same width?

Well, I like an oversized fit for my own clothes - so, here are my 2 cents :)
#1 - looks a bit too A-line and hem does not appear as straight as it should be, possibly due to a fabric weight.
#2 - I like this cardi, the proportions seems right to me. Personally, I prefer slimmer fit of sleeves on an otherwise oversized knitwear.
#3 & 4 - love this color! The dress looks really good on you.
#5 & 6 - to my eye, the shirt looks a bit too long. It is hard to balance volume over volume but keep trying! Also, maybe try to button the shirt. But I have to say, I’m not loving a choice of footwear with this outfit. Looks too heavy to me.

Love, absolutely love your hair! Have you any try curl defining products to combat a bit of the frizz and to create more slicker look?

I don’t know much about body type but girl, you look great!

I'm really liking the hair! Mine is less curly and much less voluminous. I wish I could get more volume. The grass is always greener on the other side!

You wear the oversized look really well! I like all the outfits. The rust dress doesn't look too oversized to me, but I also know that photos can play tricks with how things look.

I think that you are actually more of a medium contrast, since you have pale skin and dark hair. You may feel washed out if you are wearing strong, saturated colors. You look as if you would benefit from muted colors. I've been watching videos online about the difference between "clear" or "bright" coloring and "soft" or "muted" coloring. People with bright coloring need their colors to be saturated, without much gray mixed in. People with muted coloring do better with colors that are softer, which have gray mixed in with them. In the pics you posted, you seem to be wearing a lot of these muted colors, and they look good on you. So I would continue in this same vein.

I think you are a slim hourglass (hybrid of rectangle and hourglass).

What Carol S said. I like the spice colors on you but feel you would probably also look amazing in blue. I wish I had curly hair like yours and Runcarla’s. You can make it your signature. Congratulations on making some of your clothes.
You look like you have an hour glass body type to me and neutral coloring that can wear about anything. Have fun with experimenting and thinking about what makes you happy.

Hi Bee -- I'm pretty new here, too, so I can relate to still feeling a bit unsure. You're a lucky soul who can pretty much pick and choose what you want to wear -- your proportions will let you do it.

I think your "lab coat" would be stunning in another fabric. The length and shape are great. I like the mustard sweater, but wearing it with wide crop or even a straighter leg crop might elevate how you feel about it and avoid the "chicken leg" feel.

I think the rust dress is fabulous -- it's a specific style and you carry it well, even if you don't take it in.

Looking forward to following on your journey!

Congrats on first pics, Bee! Your current style is cute! Very Kinfolk. Ironically, yes, what I call the New Drab - but it’s a thing! Do you think you’re looking for something dressier?

Your hair is pretty. I think I get more what you’re saying about the curls. I think you’ve got a simple cut and it’s just making a triangle and is a bit heavy on your frame. Which is very New Drab, but again, maybe you’d rather something different now. I’m no hair stylist, but maybe something that reveals your face more and had a different shape.

You could keep it all and go more architectural... Very fun!

Hiya Bee,nice to hear from you again.First of all can I say please don’t be shy about posting.l realise that it can feel intimidating at first but in my experience all are made very welcome and after all we all had to put our first posts out there sometime!
Are you familiar with the UK brand Toast?Because your style of dressing and ‘look’ very much puts me in mind if them.ln fact you could be a model for them.If you are not familiar with them ,might be worth googling them.Their clothes are very expensive but their look book could give you some styling inspiration.l am impressed that you sew your own clothes, that is a very useful skill .
As for your outfits,l love the dress ,doesn’t look too baggy at all.The cardi is a fab colour on you and I agree that the lab coat would be nice in a better fabric. You really suit that bohemian vibe.
I am not great on classifying body shapes into words but you look like a column /slim pear type to me .There are some great resources on body shapes in the archives on this site if you want to take a look.

You look like a model for a Cos campaign, Bee! You look fit and trim and I like how you dress.

Somehow I missed your thread on curly hair from a week ago. I have wild and crazy hair that used to be red, but now looks sandy coloured due to so much white interspersed with the red. I wear it wash and go and it’s pretty BIG for being on the short side! I wear mostly solids and stripes, but find the occasional big floral pattern is a nice repeat of the curl pattern.

This post is intended to get me started on a more mindful journey with my clothes, and maybe to serve a bit like a diary and a place to ground my thoughts. It's a bit scary to share this in a well-established community and not feel a bit like an impostor, but you all were so accepting of my first post that I decided to take that leap. As I grow older, I realize that making myself vulnerable and taking risks is what allows me to grow and to connect to other people in a much more meaningful way, so here we go! I took pictures of several outfits I wore this week in order to assess where I am currently. It's kind of like a baseline sampling of things, with several black on black outfits (long-sleeve jersey t-shirts and black skinny jeans) not pictured.

I'm at a style crossroads, as I find that I'm not feeling good about the majority of my wardrobe anymore. It makes me feel drab. I like oversized items, but they tend to come off as sloppy or unbalanced. I'm also struggling with proportion. I made a post about my hair struggles recently where I talk about how wearing it big and curly changes the outfit balance for me, and I'm trying to discover ways to make it work. You all really encouraged me to experiment, and to be more mindful of things like texture and repeating elements, about which I had never thought mindfully before. The outfits here are not really informed by that, but I do have some new ideas for the future.

#1 - This "lab coat" looking jacket was a trial version that I sewed up to see if the size fits and whether I like the style. It's made of cheap fabric, and it definitely feels and looks like it. I like the sillhouette, but this is one of those items that I feel works much better with a sleek hairstyle or when wearing my hair up. Then it makes me feel like a badass evil scientist. I'd like to make this from lightweight linen, so the texture can break up that vast expanse of plain black. The pink jeans are too small, so I'll be destashing them.

#2 - This chunky knit cardigan is quite fun. I paid much more attention to the way the texture complements my hair this time around, and I think it's true. Something definitely clicks. I don't wear bright colors much, but I'm in love with this mustard. I think the proportions in this outfit are very off - extremely top heavy, and then "chicken legs" (no offense to chickens - y'all are rustic chic fabulous! ).

#3 & 4 - I made this dress also, and it's objectively 2 sizes too large. I have been wearing it a lot, and even got several compliments. I did not realize just how big it looked until I took the pictures, and was fairly shocked at how sloppy it seemed in the chest/waist area (see #3). It feels amazing, but I will have to take in the sides for sure. I'm all about the linen wrinkles, but that wrinkly tie is simply unforgivable (I am so sorry, oh fashion gods!). I'm loving the brick red, and realizing that these earth & spice colors start feeling like neutrals to me.

#5-6 - This is the only outfit from the bunch that makes me feel fab. I like how the volume on the bottom balances out the volume on top, and the floaty fabric (or maybe it's the light color?) reduces the potential heaviness of an all-oversized look. Makeup definitely helps to make things feel more polished and intentional. I should wear that red lipstick more often.

#7 and 8 - just pictures to show my body proportions. If anyone has any suggestions for flattering silhouettes for my body type, or colors to try with my skintone, I'd appreciate any insights. I think I'm very low contrast and can look washed out very easily. I plan to get some soft caramel highlights to soften the hair color, as my natural dark color feels harsh against my face. Maybe I'm drawn to black so much to balance it out, I'm not sure. But I'm willing to experiment and figure out what things work better than others, and maybe even understand why!
