Like peacechick says, the newer computers (not just Apples) aren't built like they used to be. I always feel safer knowing that if something happens, I'm covered. The first gen iPads are built like steel but the later ones seem to have poorer quality glass. My iPad mini fell off an ottoman onto the rug in a case and the screen shattered. If I'd had AppleCare, it would've cost me $79 to get a replacement. They let me buy AppleCare after the fact (I was still within 30 days) but had to pay around $200 total to replace. Now I don't skimp! I think the narrower bezel might make the screens more susceptible to shattering.
