That coat is a fabulous color! And it looks like it has just a little bit of an A-line shape and I think works really well with the dress.

Wow, what a neat outfit! The coat looks just right with the gray dress, and I think has the right shape to be worn with other dresses/skirts as well. Funny about the belt. Live and learn.

I think it's so hilarious that everyone else knows how to wear this style belt except me! And apparently my friends & family because no one has ever conducted a belt intervention for me. I shall wear it with the buckle in back next time. And everyone's enthusiasm is making me rethink this dress; I'll have to take in the waist and see if that makes me reach for it more. Thank you everyone for the nice comments!

Alasse, thanks so much! I love your style too. :)

Diana, ohhh I love puckish! If I'd gotten a male dog, Puck was high on my list of possible names.

LBD, I have actually gotten the Reese Witherspoon thing before, especially when I was younger and dyed my hair lighter blonde. I take it as a big compliment, so thank you!

Beth Ann, we're having a freakish cold front! It's like magic! lol On Friday it suddenly dropped to the 40s and it's stayed in the 30s and 40s through today. I'm in heaven. My walks are for my health & my dog but luckily they're a lot of fun too.

Three layers in Texas? That must have been some kind of a storm? Did you take a walk for fun, or for a "commute?"

The belt in pic one is indeed the front, but you can certainly wear it backward if you like!

Love your creativity here, and the combined effect suits you beautifully. I'm particularly fond of that beautiful coat!

Do any of the sewists here know whether the cap sleeves could be removed and the arm seams finished acceptably? Because that grey dress is delicious, and if sleeveless-ness and taking the waist in would make it more versatile, we'd get to see it in more of your delightful WIWs.

I've never seen that kind of belt buckled in front before, but I'm loving the detail-in-back option and am glad to have fashion preconceptions challenged.

Urchin is the perfect word - you have a lot of gamine urchin in your style. There's a certain appeal to the Les Miz look, although I don't think that's exactly what this is. It's a fab outfit and suits you so well! I always think it's great when people have a style that works so completely for them. In my mind I am much taller and leggier which would suit my own style aspirations so much better!

MG, really?! The belt is supposed to buckle in the back? Eek! I've definitely been wearing it w the buckle in the front for years. I have super slippery hair, so what I did was use a tiny little claw (like these) to catch the part of my hair I wanted back (instead of a bobby pin) and then I 'pinned' the leaf right above the little claw. Somehow the claw & brooch worked perfectly together; I was very surprised (since even most bobby pins slide out of my hair). I consider the dress a placeholder because it's a bit big in the waist (and the waist hits too high) and not quite full enough in the skirt for me to feel my best. I suppose I could try taking the waist in at least! I do love the pleats & neckline & general lines, just a few tweaks would make it much better but I'm not sure how to accomplish them. Oh and the short sleeves aren't as versatile for me as a sleeveless dress would be. Basically I've very picky. hehe But I'm glad you like this one!

Molly and World Lily, thnx for the feedback! Glad the coat goes.

As always, this is delightful. And yes, I think the coat goes with dresses just fine. That grey dress is really lovely, very simple and elegant - I'm curious as to why you see it as just a placeholder? Also, the belt is way cool, but ... um, I think maybe the "back detail" is supposed to actually go in front?? Oh and how on earth do you get a brooch to stay in your hair? If I tried that it would slide right out - which I know because I have tried it many times.

Yesterday was still cold, and as I leave my thermostat low, I knew I wanted to wear something warm! So I pulled this dark red sweater off the shelf: it's actually a sweater dress and made in the most lusciously thick and soft lambswool/cashmere blend. Unfortunately, it hits about 3 inches above the knee, and even when I added thicker tights, I felt a bit self conscious. Then I threw another dress on over top! The sweater dress has funny exposed seams (intentional, because the shoulder and underarm seams are right way in) that make it look a bit raggedy and remind me of orphanages, as does this grey dress (that I consider a placeholder for my dream fit and flare dress). The grey dress doesn't fit quite right so I distracted with a matching dark red belt (and should have adjusted things before I took the pics!): this belt has a really neat back detail: studs on one side, suede on the other, and it comes to an interesting point. I liked how the light tights looked with everything, but I wanted to bring some lightness up into the top of the outfit, and as I don't have an off white belt, I decided to layer my off white silk long sleeve shirt underneath. All 3 necklines together made me feel a bit prim, but not in a bad way. The touches of lightness at the neckline and the sleeves made me happy, and even though it's three layers, I didn't feel at all stuffed or uncomfortable, or have to keep readjusting. I think it was because the silk is so drapey, and both of the dresses are knits. In fact I took an unplanned nap in this pre photos so it must have been comfortable! And I was incredibly warm too: I didn't realise just how insulating it was until I changed into pjs and had a brief moment in the exposed chilly air.

I wanted to pick up the gold in the belt with a brooch, but the 3 necklines were enough on their own, so I ended up trying it in my hair. Surprisingly, it stayed all day with no fussing (even through the nap!)! Does it look weird? With this leaf, you've now seen all of my brooches. And of course then I had to put on my gold rings, which I still haven't gotten a detail pic of!

For my walk, it was pretty wet out, so I used the same weatherproof boots as the day before. And the same coat and hat! The only thing I changed was the scarf: I chose an off white one to keep with my colour scheme. Does this coat work with skirts? I got it as a birthday present to myself this year, back in April, off ebay (as a kind of celebration of my decision to move north in 2014) so I didn't try it on beforehand. I think it fits quite well and works with trousers, but the skirt is narrower than most of my skirts and dresses: does this look strange? And I'm used to belted wool coats: does this have enough waist definition to go with skirts/dresses? I only have 2 other wool coats, one of which is a-line so looks best with trousers, so I'd be happy if this one goes with skirts, but I defer to the experts.
